Dear Ann

You say you used to live at The Spanish Patriot in Lower Marsh.

Do you by any chance have a sister called Barbara?

Hi, do you remember a family of a mother and three sisters in Roupell St. the mother cleaned at the Houses of Parliment and Kathleen one of the daughters was blind in one eye. She married an italian waiter called Bongazoni (surname).

hi, This building was still in exsitence 15 years ago.

but no longer open. it was being used as storage. the hospital was opened by the then Princess of Wales, Princess Alexandra. I believe that lying in hospitals were used by women that had the money to pay for their stay as births were normally at home. The area around Waterloo was a poor one so your mum and dd must have had money! I hope this helps

at Waterloo station. Now look at the junction of Westminster bridge and the old GLC building. Same lion.

When the old Brewery was demolished after following partial bomb damage and to make way for the Festival of Britain 1951 was moved to the station. Then moved to the foot of the bridge. King George (from the film, the kings speech) made the coade stone lion safe from destruction by his liking for the object.

The tapas in The Cut is Meson Don Felipe. Some of the food is good but the wine is awesome. Try the Beronia Reserva - its the best. The lamb with cous-cous, the jamon iberico, the chicken livers - all good. Live spanish guitarist comes on approx 9pm. Great buzz but service is lacking. Alternatively, for better quality service and food try The Opera Tavern which is just over Waterloo Bridge in Catherine Street (outskirts of Cov Gdn).

Location: Flat/House- Needed in London – Low pay

We are shooting a short film in 7th, 8th and 9th of November 2008. We need a spacious flat/house, preferably an open plan space. It can be a loft, a warehouse or a spacious flat. It doesn’t need more than one bedroom, but the open space or the living room should be spacious. We would need (reasonable and pre-agreed) unrestricted access during these three days.

The director is a recent graduate from the University of Bristol who’s won national prizes in cinematography.

We can only offer £100 for the whole period and a copy of the film once is completed. Would suit anyone wanting to hire the flat for productions as a showcase or anyone wanting to shadow a short film production.

Please get in touch by email and email your address and pictures of the flat in the first instance.

At the turn of the 19th.& 20th. century there was a hospital in york road known as The General Lying in Hospital. Does anyone have any information about it or know if the building still exists. My Father was born there in 1910.

Ninas Hair Parlour -The Cut

I discovered the best hairdresser ever! Her name is Nina and she specialises in retro hair (mine was just a cut and its the best one I had). I used to go to Tony and Guy and most of the time it was "alrite" but never good enough.I spoke to Nina and she knew immediately what I was after. I am so so happy I just had to share it with everyone.

Two good ones

There are two very good ones really close to the Old Vic. Theres Soho Gym which is literally 2 minutes away as you head towards Stamford Street. The road is Cornwall Road, you must turn right after the arches and go straight.

The other one, the one I use, is called K4 Fitness. Just continue straight up Cornwall Road and just before you get to Stamford Street on your left you'll see it. I personally recommend K4 as its cheaper and as good as Soho. Soho is probably more professional and fancy but quite frankly, as long as you have a free weights section and a cardio section along with regular weekly classes, what else do you need? :)

Hope that helps.

Looking for space for hire for video shoot

I am looking for a space for hire for a one day video shoot featuring senior citizens swing dancing. The shoot is tentaively scheduled for June.

Ideally, to allow us the most flexibility, the space should be a community centre, school stage or gym, or theatre space. A space large enough for the dancers and camera, and one where we can darken the room then relight for our cameras.

Any assistance, leads or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I can be contacted via email:

Sat Feb 04

Hi my name is Jeremy Viewing, my grandparents John and Cecile Viewing owned and lived at the old curiosity shop at 84 waterloo road from the 1890's until 1922.

I believe that the address was in the Cut and the buildings were demolished for the festival of Britain. Does anyone know if there are any records or pictures of the shops in the Waterloo road in the early part of the last century?

re Gym

The County Hall Gym which is in the Marriott Hotel on Westminster Bridge. This is a very high quality gym which doesn't come cheap: about £100 pcm.

Only drawback is that male changing rooms are being re-furbished, but I think thy'll be finished by Christmas.

Looking for a good gym near Waterloo Station

Our company are moving offices in the first 2 weeks of December 2004 and I'm desperate to find a (good!) gym in/around Waterloo Station. Our offices will be near Southwark tube station.

Any advice, greatly appreciated!

Yours, with fingers crossed,

Fri Nov 05

I'm pretty sure there's one on Stamford Road! 5mins from the Old Vic!

Thu Oct 21

totally agree

that living in an area where you can walk to everywhere automatically justifies the price tag. waterloo is great because it is quiet, yet the views from the south bank are probably the best in london. and of course you have trafalgar sqaure just over the brdige. brilliant!

Thu Sep 16

No place better in central London!

I have lived in Waterloo for the last few months, and although it's pricey (can't believe the fact some pay so little apparently), the fact that I cycle to work, walk to the West End, have the South Bank centre around the corner and avoid public transportation FULL STOP, makes the price tag meaningless. And on top of that I would prefer to live here over any place in central London. The West End's too busy, Chelsea's just boring and Clerkenwell and surrounding is full of pretence... I have found that a lot of people in my street have lived here for decades and there is a real community fee to the area. I love Meson Don Felipe, the Ruby Lounge, etc. etc... I think I have said enough. I am not leaving any day / year soon!

The Necropolis Railway - tour

Anyone who read Andrew Martin's thriller "The Necropolis Railway" may be interested in a tour which includes the Necropolis railway HQ and Brookwood Cemetery on Sunday 14th November at 10.30am at 121 Westminster Bridge Road. John M Clarke - author of all history books written on the subject - will show us around. We then catch a train to Brookwood. After lunch we will be shown round the cemetery. The tour ends at 3pm but people can take an optional tour of St Edward the Martyr's church, a Russian orthodox church, which houses the remains of Edward the Martyr.

The Friends of Brookwood cemetery usually request a donation of at least £2.

A cheap day return to Brookwood is £8.90 but bring network cards to keep the costs down.

Sunday lunch at at the pub near the station costs £5.95 but needs to be booked in advance.

Hiya. I am looking for somewhere to do Yoga as part of a group in London b4/after work. Did you find somewhere??

Wed Jan 21

The Stage Door

A good pub in Webber Street behind the Old Vic theatre, the staff are very friendly and it has in general a friendly, welcoming feeling there....They will cater for you,im sure.

Wed Dec 31

You could go to the Barca in the cut.

Its quite pricey though - or alternatively there is a Pizza Express and a Chez Gerrard under the bridge.

Or if you were feeling really energetic you could actually walk across the bridge and you are in the West End.

Mon Nov 24

There are some decent pubs on Stamford St.

Such as the Stamford arms where I used to hang out when I was a student. Or there are some other pubs behind the station in the nice area with the terraced housing, its all very Charles Dickens.

Xmas party in Waterloo

Can anyone suggest something please??

Thu Sep 04

where can i park in waterloo without paying the congestion charge in the week

Fri Jul 11

It's just the best area. It's relatively cheap, dead central and you can walk to the SouthBank, Tate Modern, Borough Market, the City... the list goes on. Where else will your local cinema be the National Film Theatre?

Fri Jul 04

Yes, try Culture Grub in The Cut. It's very cheap but good quality Chinese.

Fri Jul 04

Dont go there when the staff have been out partying

I went to Fish on Sunday and the staff were absent minded (and in short supply) and the food was not great. We saw several other people complain when we were there as well.

Fantastic tapas

I love Meson Don Felipe on The Cut. It's a tapas bar, always crowded. Nice for a quick meal if you're seeing something at South Bank. Or just for a drink. It's probably best to book though, because even on Monday nights it seems to be crowded.

Tue Apr 22
