Mardyke Street mid to late 50s

I lived in Mardyke Street in Grant House and Cavendish House. Great memories growing up there, it was a poor area and the flats were pulled down due to slum clearance. We moved to Peckham along with some neighbours but never the same as the community in Mardyke Street.

Good Rugby Club

I am a member of a great rugby club, called the Kings Cross Steelers. Its not local to Southwark tho!

We train at the East London Rugby Club, which is 4 minutes from West Ham tube, and is just 15 minutes up the Jubliee Line. I have been a member for a year, and we play great matches and have a top-notch social life with it.

There are about 8 of us that live in Southwark and many more from across South London that train for the team, so if you like the club then there are other 'locals' who are also members. The club takes players from all walks of life and all levels. The website is www.kxsrfc.com for more info.

Good luck with your search, but my advice is to join the Steelers, I have found it to be fantastic.

Grosvener House was one of 10 blocks of flats subdivided into 2 sets of 5 houses and located either side of Mardyke Street, between Mason Street and Townsend street.

The flats were all pulled down in the early sixties and Mardyke street disappeared. The space now being occupied by Mardyke House. Mason Street and Townsend street still exist though.

There is a photograph of Mardyke Street and Mason Street circa 1957, which is held at The London Metropolitan Archive.

Hope this helps...
