Welcome to London South Norwood

Portland Rd Shops

I lived, with my parents, in SN between late 1960s and late 1980s. Mum is still with us but now has dementia. She likes to talk about our time there and the shops we used to go to. Can anyone remember the name of the following shops on Portland Rd:

- the men's shop (opp side of road to petrol station) that was like Mr Benn's

- the large women's access shop that had long counters, drawers behind an plenty of staff to serve you

- the crockery shop that used to stack its wares on the pavement (I think it was where New City is now)

- the small furniture shop - towards St Luke's

There are plenty of others I can think about but I won't bore everyone!!

South Norwood Hill area

It's a great place to live, on the outskirts of the Crystal Palace triangle, has loads of green spaces on the doorstep from sailing or fishing on South Norwood Lakes; woodland walking through Grange Park or a short walk to Crystal Palace Park, I'm spoilt for choice. Also commuting into London couldn't be easier. Fast trains from Norwood Junction (zone 4) takes 15 mins or Crystal Palace Overground (zone 3) saves me money on the cost of my ticket. Transports links are great with bus route close by taking me all over London from Clapham, Battersea to Elephant and Castle to name a few, also there are non stop buses from my door step to Russell Square and back. I could go on, and on but will stop with mentioning that it has great schools, and is also in the catchment area for some of the top secondary schools in England (St Olaves just to mention one). It's a great place to live.

IR

We live on Ingatestone Road and love it. It is a pretty and safe street, and the neighbours are friendly and welcoming. A lot of new young professionals have bought in the area and the area is changing. Good luck and hope to meet you at some point.

Selhurst Road is it safe in SN???

Hi everyone. I'm moving into flat on Selhurst road with my pregnant wife. Don't know this area at all - we are moving only because of low rent and parks around. How's this area? Is it safe for mom and a small baby during day? How does it look with pharmacies and 24hour markets??? Also I'm working late hours so will be coming by train around 10-11pm... Is it safe to walk home? We live in Tooting now and I have never experienced any crime (knock on wood). If the rent wouldn't go up so rapidly during last year, we would stay in Tooting. Any advices?

Tue Apr 21

Was the name of the electrical shop on the corner of Portland road and Apsley road called Russell and Bromley

I lived in Notson road and my cousins ran the Post Office nearby until they emergrated in 1962

Arena & Woodside

We moved here 6 months ago and are astonished at the good transport and access to central London. It is very quiet too and I have travelled very late at night on the N bus.

Arena and Woodside is very safe with excellent tram and transport links . It is quiet with the country park close by. I am amazed at how easy it is to get to Tesco by tram.

We moved here in May and so far very happy

radio shop portland road

hi I moved into south norwood in 1988 and there was a radio shop on the corner of Portland road and apsley road, the post office is still there with the same owners, they may know more, it had been there for years, until it closed down around 92 ish l cant remember the name off hand, but l will ask around and re post it. good luck

Thu Sep 25

Randall Slade

Does anyone remember Randal Slade, the grocers at the end of Woodside Avenue? Also, Busby's, a small grocers half way down Woodside Avenue? I was born at number 54 in 1954 and can remember the latter shop (now returned to residential use) as a small child.

I believe Randal Slade had a bakery at the end of the avenue too, and as a child, I remember getting free 'rejects' of Palm Toffee from there on a Sunday morning.

Sun Aug 24

Woodside IS part of South Norwood

I was born in Woodside Avenue and lived there for 14 years. It has always had South Norwood as part of the address and SE 25 post code. Woodside takes its name as the village at the side of the wood - the North Wood that became Norwood.

RADIO SHOP PORTLAND ROAD

Do you have any idea of when this would have been? My parents lived with Mums parents in Albert Road when I was a child and I have a payment card for 2 bakealite radios around the early 1950's. I think the card was headed Radio Rentals in Portland Road.

Tue Jan 28

Night bus?

I'm thinking about moving to South Norwood given the reasonably priced homes! I dont know much about the area but it looks like there are plenty of shops and green spaces, which is what I am looking for. I'm a single girl so transport is quite important. During the day it looks great but I can't work out how you get there during the night I.e. early hours of the morning? I like to go out after work and don't want to be stranded after midnight....

Tue Oct 01

My cousin owned a television and radio in portland road on the corner of addison road but his first name was Don and when he retired his son colin took over. There was also an another television shop in the dip of portland road on the oppersite side to Ingatestone and watcombe roads.

Tue Jun 04

I went to Portland 1964 until 1968. both my sisters also went there in the 1950. The heads name was Mr Wickson. My father lived in south norwwod all his life, he was born in what was known as victoria road which later became coventry road.

Moving to Tennison Road.

Hi Guys,

My husband and I are moving to the new apartments coming up on Tennison Road. Right now we are renting in Uxbridge and the new apartments there are just in our budget to buy.

We took a short stroll down the high street but couldn't really assess the area in the short period.

I work long hours and get home late so how safe would it be to walk back home from the station at around 9.30 pm? Could you guys please share your experiences so I have enough peace of mind!

Tue May 28

Old Radio Shop

I have been told that an old uncle of mine, William Back, had a radio/electrical shop in South Norwood, probably Portland Road. Does anyone remember it or knows where it was please?

Moving to South Norwood 2011

Hi. I'm in early 30s looking to buy a flat and having been looking at crystal palace area but it's too expensive (and not keen on the one way traffic). I've lived for the last 5 yrs in Colliers Wood /Tooting and have been happy and felt relatively safe in these areas. South Norwood looks cheap in comparison and I'm wondering what it's like in 2011.. I visited once during the day on a week day and it seemed fine and quite friendly and quiet. Not sure why it's so cheap? Is it relatively ok at night? Is the area getting better/worse?

Norwood Reviews.. Update!

Hello All,

Thinking about moving to Norwood, South London. I have visited on three occasions, both times on a weekend day.

I just wanted some insider info on how it is to live there currently - 2011.

Is safe walking home on a winters night? Is transport reliable (reliable being the key word) into London for work?

Are the local parks relaxed and family orientated, as oppose to hoodies with bull terriers?

Can anyone recommend areas/streets best avoided?

Are the local schools better than average, with the kids speaking english as oppose to dis, dat an der udder ting)?

I hope to move with my partner - we are a young couple, both just under 30, hope to have children in the next 5 years. Mainly looking for a 2 or 3 bed house with garden on a quiet street.

Any solid info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

South Norwood...

I tend to go out in Crystal Palace or Norwood Junction...but a few pubs to go to include Ivory Coast, Joiners Arms and the Albert.....Other pubs Albion and Jolly Sailor have new owners and trying to up their game. The Indian at the begginning of Portland Road is really good....and very popular. The Thai Restuarant on Portland Road is good too. The bus to Crystal Palce runs every seven minutes and takes ten minutes....And there's lovely restaurants also in South Croydon.

What are people moaning about Part 2

South Norwood has good transport links and you can get into the main part of croydon very quickly. Correction, is there was any spelling mistakes, who cares what people read in any papers. London is a major international city and has the same people as any where else in the world. No place any one is trapped, maybe for the residents who say its gone down over maybe you should have been planning to find a place where your happy. As for others it is just find, not every street has the same type of people in South Norwood

We had a RSPB Bird watch over the Weekend where the Visitor Centre was open, and people came inside had tea and made Bird Boxes for their own use or leave for the park, there were even ballons for the Kids, while they could play safely in the Play area nearby.

Would you like to come and join us, then all you need do is get in touch with the park wardens Dave or Tom who will put you in touch with us. Thanks for your Interest.

I dont like the area

I live next to the football stadium, it's very noisy during the match, but I never had problem with the fans.

But there are black gangs everywehre. Much more black people live in this area, than whites. They tried to sell me drugs, I hear sometimes the police helicopter looking for somebody in the middle of the night. Once they were even shooting each other on the street where I live.

Same problems in Thornton Heath. West Norwood and Crystal Palace are a bit better.

Mon Oct 05

Thank you Rachel. I whtink I will.

Hi. I have been living in South Norwood for nearly 2 years. Started to like it more when I moved to Woodside side, as it is green and nice here. Now planning to buy a house and thinking of Brocklesby road (off Ingatestone off Portland road). Does anyone know if it is ok there?

Selhurst Road

Hi there

I've lived in South Norwood for 1 year now. I bough a 2 bedroom flat on Holmesdale Road which is parallel to Selhurst Road. I think the area is v. safe. I've lived in Stockwell previously, where I had my car broken into 5 times. I've never experienced anything like this in SN. Infact, I had a neighbour informing the whole street recently that she had seen someone looking in their cars at 5am, and warned us to keep all valuable off the seats. When did that last happened to you? People are v. friendly and flats/houses are cheaper than a lot of London. Selhurst Road is a main road leading from SN through to Selhurst and onto Croydon. It wouldn't be fair to call it quiet simply because of the through traffic. But flats are big on this road.

Apparently SN is an up and coming area so there are many plus' to living here

Intelligent life in South Norwood

Choosing safer and greener parts of a borough to live in is not the preserve of those in kensington and chelsea -despite the patronising assertion of the above poster. The area around the lakes and South Norwood Hll is simply safer than the streets south of the staion and off the Portland Road. In terms of transport links and green space as well as cheap property, South Norwood is a good bet. Sure it has a somewhat seedy side but the potential is there and time will tell whether it will develop.

Portland Road School

I can remember negotiating through the smog as a child, on my way to school where my journey took me across Woodside Green where you could only see about three feet in front! My brother and me clad in balaclavas - the old-fashioned hoodies! In the autumn we would collect conkers resulting in many a bruised hand until the season was expired. The area was one I would consider as 'safe'. My senior school was Portland Road in South Norwood and I can remember feeling quite traumatised on my first day in a 'Woodwork' class. A group of what was really young men to me, burst in supporting a wounded classmate who's wrist had been slashed with a broken bottle in a playground brawl. I can still visualise the blood spurting like a fountain from his wrist. I soon realised that the reputation the school had was well deserved. It scared the hell out of me. As I grew up,learning to maintain safety in numbers in order to 'survive' by sticking to my group of mates I can recall fond memories of what we g

I am looking into buying a flat on park road, off of holmsdale road which is very close to the football ground. For info as well as contacts/ links about South Norwood, the South Norwood Residents Association is very helpful; check them out and contact them via www.snra.org.uk.

On a side note, my elderly mother lives in South Norwood. The neighbours on her road are extremely friendly, she loves going for walks in the South Norwood Country Park which is teaming with wildlife, and the trams are excellent.

S. Norwood - Decline or Ascendant? 1

I lived in oliver grove for 18 years, moved away in 1977 and still visit my elderly relly's fairly regularly. Seeing all the worries about how Safe it is, I thought I should add my tuppence worth. As far as I can tell violence, assault and theft is as common now as it was in the early sixties, the only difference is that it is all publicised now. several good friends at school in the 70s were stabbed at one time or another, but then another had his head severed by a shotgun blast in crystal palace in the early eighties.

S. Norwood - Decline or Ascendant? 2

continued from previous post...

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to suggest that such things are rife, just that the worsening state is a myth. I now live in a small village in sussex and a recent stabbing adds to the list that includes a machine gunning in 1945.

So I'd suggest chilling out about the fear. Where there is some truth however, is in the well documented outward progression of urban decay that radiates from London. In the early 70s crystal palace was a dump, and thornton heath was quite a village, now C.P. has gentrified and Thornton Heath is on the cusp.

S. Norwood - Decline or Ascendant? 3

continued from previous post...

From many years observation I would say that the portland road area, (not the woodside end) has always been a bit Down market, while around the lake and up the hill a bit up market. while east and west towards penge and croydon are fairly mixed and reflect the state of the next towns along. Watching the decay radiate out, it seems obvious that the thornton heath end of S Norwood has become more like streatham was 20 years ago, while the hill seems to be doing more like Crystal Palace.

Tue Jan 15

S. Norwood - Decline or Ascendant? 4

continued from previous post...

So where will it stop? My prediction is: that in 20 years time, S Norwood High street will be a Shi-shi pedestrianised heritage high street with restaurants and interior decor shops/florists while upper Portland Road will be a trendy Deli, bar type area with independant shops. Woodside green on the other hand will be a police no-go area and burnt out car recycling yard and there will be a border (with checkpoints) between west croydon. The Island on Norwood lake will become a tapas bar and the Rec will be planted as an arboretum.

But before any of this can happen South Norwood Clock Tower must once again be painted Matt White, as it was intended to be.

POST / MAIL

Is anybody else noticing the later and later delivery of daily post/mail, and the delays. I don't think it's a knock on from the strike. It was occurring before this. One night a few months ago the postman delivered at 10.15pm NO LIE. I SPOKE WITH HIM. HE WAS DOING OVERTIME .

It seems too that thinhs being sent first class are either arriving very late in afternoon the following day , but more commonly, 2-3 days later. I have been monitoring this as I have been waiting for important documents more than once very recently

Oh thank you.

Oh thank you for that rec' love. I'll try them.

I'd be moving to streets not that far from Selhurst park, so I imagine that I'd be withing their catchment area.

Do they give you enough time to explain your problems to them? I hate it when GP's try and shush you out before you've hardly opened your mouth, and unfortunately I have a lot of medical problems to sort out. *sigh*

Sue, I can recommend the South Norwood Hill Medical Practice. It is near to the junction of South Norwood Hill and Whitehorse Lane, so only 5 mins walk to football ground. Doctor Attard is the tops at this 3 Doctor practice, though if you prefer a lady doctor, Doctor Cutler would do as well. Also the reception staff are the complete opposite to the usual ogres and miserable tyrants (receptionist My Hero TV prog) one encounters. Have been registered here for 31 years. Please post if you find this useful.

Any good doctors in south Norwood?

It looks like I may have to move back to South Norwood after 27 years living somewhere else (unfortunately!) , and as I suffer from a variety of serious illnesses finding a good compassionate GP is an absolute must, So does anyone know of one in and around selhurst park football ground?

Someone who is actually willing to listen to what a patent says to them. Yeah, a tall order I know!

Moving to Estcourt Road South Norwood

I have just put an offer down for a house in Estcourt Rd and has been accepted. I do not know the area at all. From what I could see it looks quiet and residential. Any suggestion, reccomendation, advice?

Should I go ahead with the purchase?

Thanks
