Alf the Greengrocer passed away in 2018 in St Thomas’s of ALZHEIMERS. He was getting forgetful in 2011-12 and finally diagnosed in 2013. He was taken from Kings College to go to a care home for his own and everyone else’s safety in Sept 2015. He was leaving things alight and going missing looking for his mum’s old house where North Peckham is now. Most of the neighbours were very kindly and understanding of his Alzheimer’s and supportive of his daughter looking after him and his wife whilst at home. His wife Irene died in January 2016 of Sepsis. She had numerous health problems over the years that contributed copd, heart failure, ischemia, vascular dementia. They lived and worked in Nunhead for over 45 years.

Yes, I well remember Cutler's, otherwise known as "penny, ha'penny, tuppence" which referred to his sweetie box as he pointed out the different values of the contents. Used to wind him up by asking "how much is that one" which resulted in him repeating the "penny ha'penny tuppence" line while getting more and more aeriated at each new request. Used to love the little black aniseed flavour gums.

back before family holidays abroad,in the 1950s there was not a lot of money about ,to take the kids and family on holidays,so in the six weeks school holidays, what did most families do ,they packed up there pots, pans, bedding ect,and shoved it all on trucks, vans, lorries, trains, or any form of transport they could find, and head off from nunhead, Peckham, and all over London,to the hop fields of kent,it was a great way to have a break from London, and earn some bear money,on the hop farms the farmer provided tin huts, and work to pick his hops, all the family mucked in pulling the vines down, and picking off the hop heads into the canvas troffs, each bushel picked, was money for the family, food was cooked on open fires ,metal grids and little ovens, you wore your cloathes for a week, till sunday, that was wash day,and washed your self in a bowl,or small iron bath, the kids went scrumping for fruit, and the parents went to the local boozer,,there were people from all over London having sing songs
when you walk around the nunhead area, you are walking the roads and streets of those that have passed on ,and loved and lived in ol nunhead in the 1950s onwards, there was charley morgon, mr Wilcox, johny and betty the hair dressers, the law brothers,my cutler, fred ayres,mr kimble, mrs cheese,mr soper,mr beven,mr and mrs evens,a lot has changed in nunhead over the years, but once nunhead was just like a little villiage, everyone knew everyone, kids played in the streets, women nattered at there garden gates, men went to the bookies,or boozers, the salvation army had there sunday morning parade around the streets on sundays,no shops open on sundays, rye lane was the hub of shopping, there was Saturday morning pictures for the kids, and rag en bone ,men up and down the streets, coal was delivered by coal trucks, and milk men delivered the milk, crime was not known back in those days in nunhead, when you see the old folks around nunhead, stop and ask them what it was like, its a lot different in todays wo
yes I knew cutlers, also law brothers, johny,s the barbers, and betty,s the womens hair cut shop, the bus station ,later a wine supermarket, funfair at kings arms later the open air swimming pool,3 pubs, man of kent, nuns head, pyro, can go back to the prison of war camp for itialians, the nuns housing, the trolly buses before being replaced with trams, low decker buses, horse troffs, the salvation army, the 3 picture houses, the tower, the odeon ,the gaulmont,I could go on all day about ol nunhead,en Peckham, its all gone now into history,

Hi, I'm looking to trace any info on my grandmother who lived in Nunhead from 1948 onwards . She lived there most of her married life so I figure someone would know her and her husband / family. Her name was Harriet Rose Banks. She lived at 34 Nunhead Grove in 1948 with her husband James banks. They did have 2 kids in the 1950's named Jennifer and Ray. Any info on my grandmother at the time would be most appreciated. I'm collecting a family history from my mothers side of the family. Contact me at
The council wasn't very fair to some of the long term shop tenants a few years ago, doubling the rent and wanting fully repairing leases (£60k just for repairs!) then having scared them off, they sold the properties (having refused over the years, to sell to the existing tenants or do the necessary repairs !!)
Project scapes is a local garden services / landscaping company .. low overheads and great prices
Happy to help in all aspects of garden work

Hi,
I have been searching online for bits and bobs related to my family history and when I came across this, the name's rang a bell in my head. My Nan was best friends with your sister Kathy as she lived on Barset Rd too, along with my grandad and all their children (my mother included). They later moved to Beer & Wine, which is the home I remember my grandparents in and remember Kathy from when she would come round to do my Nan's hair still in the 90s!
My Nan was called Alice Harrison (Hodges) married to Donald and their children were: Jean, Pat, Eileen, Richard, Christine (My mum) and Martin.

Jeff Latouche did some work for me, and I'm afraid I can only describe him as a complete cowboy. He was unreliable, did a poor job, wouldn't give me a receipt (cash only!), and wanted to have an argument about everything. Terrible.

They used to have one, but sadly it has expired. The shop in Nunhead is still going strong. So sad that the Penge and Beckenham shops have closed. I remember their marvellous shop in Bromley Market Square, which closed some years ago, and has been replaced with yet another coffee chain outlet. Not a change for the better!

hi, would love to get back in touch with people I used to know,,,,, lived in barset road in 60s and early 70s before moving to peckham,, went to hollydale school, can remember mrs rixon head teacher, There used to be wet fish shop and next door gift shop run by same couple used to play with there daughter , remember petrol garage run by mortons ,, used to hang around with their daughter paula, she had brother raymond, would love to hear from all who remember me
No you haven't chosen the wrong side - its nice and quiet in Borland Rd. There were loads of "local" shops in Cheltenham Rd, including a post office, a green grocers and a butchers, a dairy ... but everyone headed off to sainsburys and they closed. If you want shops, pubs, etc ... perhaps forest hill rd is nearer.
Evelina Rd used to be really great 30 years ago ... there was a laundry, a nicer bakers, 2 greengrocers, an offlicence, a petshop, a cobblers, a recordshop, a tea rooms, an aquarium shop, antiques centre, clock shop, photographers, an optician, gift shop ... etc. To add to the village feel .. there was also an old horsetrough that the council removed and replaced with an ugly recycling bank.
Hi,
Kitto Rd is great. Lovely parks,no chavs or few gangsters. The rail station is exactly 7 minutes away from the station.
Nice public school down the road. The hill view is brilliant, quite leafy surrounds. Two shops not to far away. Great community activities in the newly opened cafe opposite the park.
I am moving from East Dulwich to Nunhead but I understand that all the life is happening on Nunhead Lane or Evelina Road, while I will be in Borland Road...
Apart from the Ivy House, is there anything else around there?
I noticed all the shops on Cheltentham Rd that were closed over the weekend, seem to be shut also during the week. Not a chemist neither?
I really like the flat and being near the park but need some advice also on safety in that particular area. Did I choose the wrong side of Nunhead?
Don't Know which end of Bellwood Road you refer to I've not been there since 1974, but at one end was the Vicar's house and the Church Hall, at the other end Ivydale road school and a derelict house since 2nd world war most of the house were built after the 2nd WW
I asked him to repair my roof. The first problem was to get him to send me a quote - I had to pester him for umpteen times. The next problem was getting him to turn up. He was completely unreliable - on several occasions he said he would be coming and then didn't turn up, no phone call, nothing. When he did come he skimped the work, was hardly there and the price was exorbitant for the amount of work. AVOID
Hi
Just to let you all know that I can look after your cats (and other small animals) over the Easter hols. in Nunhead. Take a look at my website
www.thecatsitter.co.uk for further details. Thanks
There's another great pub closer to you on Dennett's Road called 'The Telegraph at the Earl of Derby'. You can easily walk to Queens Road or Brockley stations, which are getting the East London Line in May, plus Nunhead station which is on the Thameslink and also goes to Victoria. Night buses run down the old kent road, but you'll have to walk from New Cross - there are a few - the N172 springs to mind. You have got Telegraph Hill park nearby with sweeping views of the capital. Nunhead high street has 2 butchers; a great bakers and a first class fishmonger. Cheaper than East Dulwich and minus the pretension.
Dog Kennel Hill , East Dulwich, Adventure Playground has an intimate newly built music studio situated on its grounds. It has musical equipment there. It's fantastic!!!
You can take a train from Nunhead station and it's only 2 stops away.
Contact Patrick (Manager) on: 0207 274 6197.
Good luck and welcome to Nunhead!!!

Just curious - is the old apartment building showing on Google Satellite map as Station Court, Gibbon Road right by the Nunhead Station still there or has it been redeveloped into nice homes?
If it has been demolished and rebuilt with nice homes at its site, does anyone know how long ago the redevelopment was? I am just curious how out-dated those Google Satellite Maps are.

The green flower pot looks a bit sad though - one wispy plant trying to survive in there!
The newest looking one is the latest addition to the street. The other two were added to the street on spare land after number one was built! Hence they had to have a number that related to their position in the road. We have a new house in our street number 30a because it was on land between 30 and 31!
I grew up in Nunhead and do cleaning in Nunhead and Dulwich. I charge £10 per hour and am an excellent cleaner. I am reliable, trustworthy and can provide first class references having worked for discerning clients. I have experience of gardening and housekeeping also.
Thank you for your time. For further details if you require My email is :
I'm looking for a window cleaner (2nd floor) and a damp specialist in Nunhead?
I walk passed these houses every day on my way to get the train - And I just dont understand why these houses are numbererd this way. They all appear to be single dwelling houses. Though the large one on the end looks newer. But then when I look at 1 and 1A they also look a bit different from the rest of the houses on the road.
So -can anyone tell me why? its soooo bugging me!!! and I just cannot find any info on the internet.
Thanks
