St Anthony

I went to St Anthonys and left in 1981. Miss Quigley was my form teacher and was really scary. Mrs Eames was my ballet teacher. I can picture my music teacher but cant remember her name but she wore pearls or similar and would sell these little necklaces that were a cord type chain with a pendant made of glass or something else similar - I went on to Rosary Priory. some names I remember Alexandra De la Rosa, Gaby Kochane, Lisa Givvert Anne hudson I am in contact with Julie Leane and the DeBroekerts still

Mon Aug 17

St. Anthony

My siblings and I all attended Mill Hill School (Ferrari) Nicolette, Margarita and Roberto (Bobby). I also made my first communion there. Mrs Kendal was my ballet teacher. I had the misfortune to have Miss Quigley as my form teacher who then got married & was Mrs Nicolson. I hated her with a passion, she was cruel. We had a boy (Christopher) who had a learning disability and she would terrorize him by threatening to send him to the 'House on the Hill' My younger sister used to be bullied by Tracey Roberts and her sister Kim. Don't have any great memories from those days, I probably was not the best behaved as by the time I turned 11 I stopped believing in the faith. We were close friends with the Wykes family (Tracey, Lisa & Daniel. I went to Rosary Priory in Bushey, Herts. Susan Ferrari

Hi Peter. I was at St Vincents when you were there and I think you appear in a photo I have of the school football team....goalie?

I also remember the visit of Blue Peter and I think Christopher Trace was there. He wanted us to dance to She Loves You and Twist and Shout.

I am Richard O'Brien (sisters Anne, Theresa and Bernadette). 1959 - 1965. I have fond memories of our house Sister, Sr Aloysius, who is now buried in the nun cemetery.

I have a good friend in Sydney. Where did you end up?

I'd like to hear more about you views and memories.

Tue Jul 02

Hi Paul. I too was at St Vincent's 1959 - 1965. My name; Richard O'Brien (with three younger sisters - Anne, Theresa and Bernadette.) We must have been there at the same time. Do you remember any of the childrens' names? Or the nuns?

I agree with you that the sisters/nuns were mostly very caring and I have fond memories of Sr Aloysius (buried now in the cemetery at the back of the house.

Some of the building has been demolished but the house we lived in is there and access is restricted as the place has been converted into multimillion pound flats. You should see the playground! Do visit but there is no parking. Park at the village pond and walk to the school.

Hi, i have just left a message for you on your phone, that i was at the orphanage from 1953-1956. age 9-12yrs. Sr. Aloysius was the only teacher at the time. but that was no use to me,because i had no previous education and was always at the back of the classroom.yes it was a very sad place to be. life can be very cruel, but look on the bright side, you are never alone with your guardian angel by your side. all the very best. regards, john

Do you perhaps mean St Vincent's Orphanage,on The Ridgeway? It has been closed several years now. It has been turned into flats overlooking the Totteridge Valley. The once steep cobble stoned drive has tarmac over it, and has been renamed 'St Vincent's Lane'. There have been many name changes over the years. From Orphanage to Residential Home to later, becoming a retreat centre called Damascus House, presently private flats. The Day school at the top of the lane has closed and a new one built across the road. The top Chapel is still there. Provincial House is lying empty. The Priory across The Ridgeway is now Provincial House, but smaller in comparison. Many of the Sister's are buried in the cemetery in the grounds below the 'old' Orphanage building. The statue of St Vincent with the boy and girl on either side, has as far as I know been removed to the day school's grounds.

I remember Sr Stephanie with great fondness. She is the reason I became a teacher. She was so kind and when I said I wanted to be a nun said do something useful like teach teach instead lol.

I remember Mrs Quigley with loathing. She was unbearably cruel to me every day. I've never forgotten the love and kindness of Sr Stephanie. I went on to St Mary's

email me please if he remembers her

I always thought I had imagined the 'barbed wire ruler'! I came across these posts by accident, and it was almost a relief to read that, though it wasn't a pleasant memory. I think our mothers objected at one point and she had to stop? It's hard to believe now. I was there 1959 to 64 and was one of the 'non-Catholic' girls.

St Josephs convent student

Hi Moira,

It sounds as though we may have been at St.Anthony's at the same time -who do you remember at school from that time? I would be interested to know.

Thu Jul 28

That would have been St. Edward's Orphanage for Girls in Totteridge run by the Sisters of the Holy Cross.

Thu Jul 21

Hi Pete, I was at st Anthony's school from 1954 to 1960. I remember Sr Stephanie, Sister Dymphna, Sr Bead (vaguely) maybe Sister Agatha, Mrs Murphy. Mr Bishop moved to the USA. As a young adult I worked in his school in Eugene Oregon for a year. The person I would like to find is Jane Billaux, who I was at school with. Also Jennifer Gale and Elizabeth Winterbottom. There was a boy, Julian, till we were 7. But after that age they stopped taking boys.

St. Anthonys School -Mill Hill -1965-1970

I was a pupil at St. Anthony's when Sr Stephanie was the Head. I remember Miss McCarthy, Miss Quigley-who went on to become Mrs Nicholson, Miss Di Palmer, Mrs Wilczenski, Mrs. Kendal, Mrs Barker and Mrs Patten who taught elocution. Some of the nuns really shouldn't have been teaching children. Sr. Alexis and Sr. Agatha were scary and extremely strict. I stayed in contact with Miss McCarthy until she died. Some of the others I remember were Mr and Mrs Murphy and in my year were Annie McGhoohan, Emma Howard, Clare Rooney, Helen Fung, Sharne Pilato and Janie Capaldi. I used to love being in the school plays. I went on to St Marys Abbey. I would love to hear from anyone who was there when I was.

I must have been at St Anthony's around the same time, with Sr Stephanie, Sr Agatha and Miss Quigley as my form teacher! ?1963-1965. Miss Quigley used to hit our hands with her "barbed wire ruler"! I do remember Stefan Gunter was in my class and one of the Petry girls, we went on to St Mary's Abbey on the Ridgeway. My brother also went to St Anthony's at the same time, though he was 2.5 years younger than I, he was in a class with Julie Forsyth and we have a photo somewhere!

I wonder if you could help, my mum was in this home from 1930, aged 2, until she left to join the land army in 1945. Her name was Patricia Broadway, she worked in the infirmary once she was old enough but before she joined the land army. Her favorite nun was Sister Mary Edwina, who she thinks might have been German.

We've been trying to find more info on the home, and especially any photos that might exist.

I would be grate full for any info, memories you could add.

Tracing records

Continued:. We were informed at the time that the building was being sold/had been sold. Importantly, although St Vincent's is no longer owned by the church, I feel sure that they would have stored children's files as demonstrated by their ability to retrive our file 30 years on. Also people may also be able to access their files by contacting the relevant local authority. The process to be received into care would have involved a referral to the relevant local authority children's social work services. This would be the local authority where the parent and child resided. The local authority may hold records. The local authority now has to keep records of children who are in care for 72 years. I don't know what the procedures was many years ago but would be worth asking for access to files. This may cost about £10. Good luck.

Mon Jun 09

I also attended and sister Stephanie was still there, I think that was between 1966 and ****9.

Gosh Miss Quigley was our form teacher who didn't like me very much. I do remember some very good friends made during at time.

I was at the orphanage from 1935 to 1946, but I knew it as St Joseph's Convent, Totteridge Lane. The Daughters of the Cross were there then. St Anthonys primary school ?

I'm researching my own personal history and trying to find information and photos of St Anthony's Catholic preparatory school in Mill Hill, which I attended from about 1958 - 1963. However I can find absolutely no information or images online. It seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. It was run by a Sister Stephanie whilst I was there. If anyone has any recollections or information I would be most indebted. Many thanks.

Hello Tracie . Did you know you may be able to get information from Cabrini Purley Surrey . They took over from the Catholic Rescue Society and may have records of your Dad being at St Vincents . You will have to supply proper evidence of who you say you are and your relationship . St Vincent nuns also had involvements with St Mary's Gravesend Kent . Anyone reading this the group are looking for any photos or writing of that huge building which was pulled down in about 1971 and became a......... housing development . :)

St Mary's Gravesend was formerly known as Milton Mount College for girls - well young ladies - middle class .

Sat Mar 16

No don't delete as it could be useful for archives . If this is the same Alan Johnson , a marvelous story of a family reunion has happened and details can be sent if you are not aware of them . After St Charles Brenford , Alan arrived at St Mary's Gravesend and has been in contact with Delvin John Flynn another former resident there .

I was at St Vincents with my younger brother Peter. I am not sure of the dates, but I think we arrived about 1950. Some one told me this was the film site for the recent Call The Midwife TV series, and that its now called St Josephs? I can recall the concrete steps leading down into the play area, but I cant really remember much more, except that the nuns were quite strict, but always kind and fair.

I used to live nr. Mill Hill East. Not much of a place really. If you want to live in a safe area, lovely community and have some small shops on your doorstep then why not try Woodside Park (not the Finchley side)simply catch the 221 bus opposite Mill Hill East Station and it runs through Woodside Park and you will see for yourself how lovely it is. In fact 9 out of 10 people who move there stay for good. Let me know what you think of it.

Hi Tracy,

I found your entry very interesting and one that reflects my husbands late fathers history. Like your father he had a brother and in very similar circumstances indeed...they were separated and discharged on separate dates. You mention St Charles' RC School...is this a formal orphanage/home??? who rang it - was it nuns or brothers?? I would definately like to speak to you as it seems we are both looking for answers that are very similar

Mon Mar 12

Hi there, I would be really interested in seeing the photos of the orphanage at Mill Hill. You were there the same time that Alan Johnson was there he arrived in Aug 1947 and stayed there until 1953 when he was eleven years old. Seeking Alan Johnson

I have been trying to locate the last missing piece of my family tree....My father-in-law recently passed away and his name was Kevin John Johnson both he and his brother the above named Alan were orphans.

Alan was born in 1942 and was admitted to St Vincent's Mill Hill in 1947. He had spend his early years at St Mary's Convent, Walthamstowe in the Nursery. He stayed at St Vincent's until he was 11 years old until 1953 and transferred to St Charles Orphanage, Brentford. His mother was Maud Johnson

I am hoping that Alan or anyone who knows of Alan reads this and gets in touch with me...Alan you have two sisters, Freda who is 80 years old and Mary who is 86....time is definately running out...so I hope someone who can help comes forwards.

If you were in St Vincent's at the time and knew of Alan Johnson or of both Brothers at St Charles please do do get in touch.

St Vincents 1935

Hi, my name is Tracie Loveridge and i am desperately trying to find any records for my dad who was at this orphanage in 1935, unclear for how long, he was about 3 and had a brother who was about 2, their names were Derek and David (Dave) Avenell. My dad is very very poorly and as the only family history i have is his mothers name, no father or her date of birth etc ANY information i can gain from ANY records would be a fantastic final chapter in my dear dad's life. If anyone either remembers my dad Derek or knows where i might find some records i would be soooo grateful! Thanks

Fri Sep 02

We are in a similar position. My late father in law Patrick Joseph O'Bryne (called Joe for part of his time there) was at St Vincent's from about 1934 to early 1940's he was then moved to another home I believe it was in Brentford, Essex. We know nothing about the O'Bryne side of our family at all as he was abandoned just after birth. Did manage to get his records via London Archives as he was adopted by the council while there. Would love to find out more about the home and his life as a youngster.

Hi Terry

I was at an orphanage in Mill Hill when I was 6 weeks old until I was 3 years old. I was looked after by nuns, one of whom was my Godmother, Sister Columba. I believed it was either called St Vincent's Convent or St Joseph's College? Not quite sure. I only went there because my mother was very ill and given two months to live. Miraculously, she survived although she has been severely disabled ever since - but I went back home to my family at the age of 3. Not quite sure about other childrens' circumstances but hope this helps.

Hi Linda, Can you ask your uncle if he knew the Whitehead children who would have been there at the same time? Thanks. Bev

Hello, I can't help you but my husband Alan and his brothers Steven and Peter as well as a sister Mary were in that orphanage in the 1930s. He knew a nun there St Aloysiius who was kind to him.

He was born in 1934 and stayed in the orphanage until he was fourteen so he could have been there from 1934 to 1948. They probably knew your brother and aunt and mother.

I also would love to know someone else who was there at that time and something about their lives in St Vincents.

Mill Hill Waitrose

The Waitrose store in Mill Hill is a joke.

I went in this morning - as usual there was just one check out manned. The shelves were half empty, evidently they were short supplied last night.

If the current management team are unable to run this store efficiently i.e. have sufficient numbers of check out staff available, then I suggest Waitrose gets rid of them all and starts all over again.

Oh, and dont bother bringing this to the attention of Waitrose Head Office, they ignore you

I am trying to find out what happened to a distant cousin who was put into a mill hill/Totteridge orphanage run by runs when she was 5/6 years old. About mid 1930s. Possibly St Josephs - Daughters of the Cross ??

Horse Share WANTED 1-2 days a week in North London

I'm 29, have had horses all my life, ridden for more than 15 years and have done some competing in dressage. Now I would like to get back into riding again: I'm available once or twice a week, preferably weekdays, and can contribute financially if requested. Would be able to do ground work, dressage, hacking etc, and very happy to help with all yard work and grooming. Looking for safe horse 15.1 and up.
