If you google you will find he got off a bus in Watts Street and turned left into Reardon Street and went to the Dock entrance at vinegar street. The school is opposite now a health centre base. The entrance is gone but you can still walk into Portland Square.

I live on Narrow Street, and would like to get into swimming, but dont fancy the walk to the local pool (shadwell) at night alone, any girls interested in going 2 x a week for 1 hour?
Am I right in thinking that the late 1950s/early 1960s b/w movie "To Sir with Love" was filmed in the Limehouse area? As I recall the film starred Sidney Poiter and Judy Geeson with a supporting role by Patricia Routledge (who later played 'Hyacinth Bouquet' in "One foot in the grave"). Does anyone remember the name of the street where the school was located? I think it was one of the turnings off Wapping Wall, but I need to be corrected?
There are two lovely pubs in Limehouse. They are listed below:-
1: "The Prospect of Whitby";
2: "The town of Ramsgate.
Both taverns have a lot of fascinating history; sold real ale and good food; and seemed very popular. I would have visited both taverns more frequently, but I live in south-east London and can't get around so much as my health is in decline. However, the above taverns were very good.

Hello- I amd descended from James Edgar Newell- the Stepney councillor. He ran a cartage business from Burdett road in the twenties. Newell Street is named after him.
I have family details as he came from cambridgeshire where his family were Blacksmiths in Guilden Morden.
Newell Street was named after my Grandfather James Edgar Newell who lived in Burdett Road and was a Stepney Councillor. He died in 1931 so the road might have been built about that time.

I just moved in between Limehouse and Shadwell and am looking for the nearest squash club/court. does anyone know?
I've lived in Limehouse since 1980 and I now live on the Isle of Dogs. I can honestly say that Limehouse and the surrounding area is relatively safe however, you still need to keep your wits about yourself at night. Muggings, car break-ins and certain areas of the council estate may have some druggies so be careful. The area has changed alot and more recently I think it has got slightly worse but then it is not safe in any neighbourhood even Canary Wharf has its problems. I was brought up on a council estate in Limehouse so it is not a bad area in general. I hope this helps.
Lived in Limehouse for nearly a year, is great - is very safe and has the city and canary wharf near by
Limehouse is a beautfiul area and honestly it's quite safe. I've been here a year and never felt worried.
Hope that helps!
I'm thinking of moving to Limehouse in the very near future with my friend and my boyfriend but I know there are a lot of council estates around there, and then really nice places.
My boyfriend often works late into the night and comes home around 2/3/4 am, on a night bus, and i'm worried about him walking around the estates or otherwise at that time of morning.
How safe is Limehouse, honestly? I love the area but don't want to worry.
Thanks!
Does anybody know when Newell Street was built?
Are you researching Newell in London?
Would like to swap info
Does anyone know a good dressmaker in Limehouse/East London -- my job involves travelling in hot countries and I need some suitable clothes.

Hi. I am moving to Limehouse in 4 days. How do I register with a good local GP and dentist?
Many thanks. Please reply to:
There is a laundromat on Salmon Lane, about 5 minutes walk from Limehouse Station (towards Regents Canal). I think it is called Ross Laundrette - very friendly ladies working there. Make sure you have plenty of 20p coins!
my washing machine is broken..any laundry arround?
Yes the nearest gym/pool is near shadwell station (<5mins walk). I live at limehouse too and it takes me 10mins to walk to the pool, or 3mins by bike.
Sorry but I forgot the name/address of it but surely you can find the info online easily.
Cheers
On Cannon Street Road are awesome - honest and good service. All the polic cars get serviced there.

Not a club as such but the Holmes Place at Canary Wharf has a court, a tennis instructor and there's a group of us who get together fairly frequently to play.
Does anyone know of a good tennis club (not just courts) i East London somewhere? Peferably near Limehouse of Bethnal Grenn.
Thanks Stine
I have several pairs of trousers that need taking up and I am rubbish at that kind of thing...!! Can you recommend someone who could do it for me, if I paid them? They're need to see me wearing them to pin them up and I live on Narrow Street in Limehouse. Thanks, Jo.
There are public tennis courts and a lawn bowls club right next to the memorial park on the river in shadwell/wapping. I heard a rumour that they might be going private, but it worth checking out.
Does any one need someone to do gardening or even landscaping for them? Very reasonable rates. If so please email
can anyone remember any of these people William McCarthy lived around this area at some point not sure where married Rosina Linay had childre 2 boys david and brian 2 girls pauline not sure of oyher girls name William died at only 26 on the 14/12/53 and was buried at st patricks catholic cemetery leyton Rosina re-married and became Rosina Dye she had more children and also titchy/totchy McCarthy don't know his real name does anyone know were they related please help.
It depends on what you like, Limehouse is very central and it has a clean side and a dirty side. Commercial road is good for driving into the city and there is the DLR, brit rail, and buses for transport which is good. If you dont have a car there isnt anywhere too close to buy food from any grocery stores. There are no cash machines other than one or two link machines. Its a bit of a nothing place really, not alot to offer. If you want somewhere which is nice and close to limehouse with stuff for general living, I would go to canary wharf where everything is accessable.
Can anyone recommend a local mechanic?

There are some very grim practices in the area but Gill Street is pretty good. To see your own doctor may mean booking weeks in advance but they have an emergency no appointment service in the morning or you can book to see another doctor.
Mile End Stadium - Tower Hamlets tennis club (Sun and Thu)
Gill Street clinic
There is good dentists and doctors
The DLR is a very good service and not busy
I'm moving to LImehouse soon and I was wondering if someone could recommend a local (ish) tennis club, or courts open to the public
Thanks
Gill Street is a very good practice -- just off Commercial Road near St Anne's church; also corner Commercial Road and Burdett Road.

We'll second that - discovered it a month ago and we've been every week since. A world away from your bog-standard Tandoori House in every sense - from the decor and abstract art on the walls (none of your flock wallpaper here) to the video screens playing MTV-style Asian music videos, no dodgy jangly sitars! Food is excellent and inexpensive, and what a treat to see so many fish dishes. India has miles of coastline and great rivers, yet you rarely see fish on an Indian menu - why? Only criticism is that some of the creamier and coconut-ty sauces are too sweet. Well worth travelling for.
please were can i get information on limehouse in 1835
Can any one recommend a good quality dentist to me. The one I had was excellent but then he moved away and I havent been able to replace.
I now have a major problem with my teeth and don't know of a good dentist
Please help
Sandra
There is a serious shortage of doctors and dentists in the area. The population has increased enormously in the past 10 years and there has been no corresponding increase in the number of health care providers. Those who work there cannot cope with the additional workload.
Loads of places. For example the new pub Narrow Street that used to be The Barley Mow & Bootys. Both on Narrow Strret in Limehouse - & both on the river with amazing views. There are also lots of good cheap curry places on Commercial Road towards Aldgate, Brick Lane is 5/10 mins away on the bus with loads of curry houses. Canary Wharf also has lots of places to eat & is easily walkable from Limehouse.
Or if you just want to buy food...there are supermarkets nearby - Tesco & Waitrose at Canary Wharf, Safeway in Wapping & Sainsburys in Whitechapel. The new Costcutter on Commercial Road opposite Limehouse DLR is very well stocked & useful - it even has organic food.
I would also recommend this.
St George's pool is on The Highway, 10 mins walk from Limehouse DLR. There is also a very nice cheap local authority gym at the John Orwell sports centre in Wapping. Canary Wharf has a Holmes Place.
Gyms well into the £60/70+ category, even with a work-related reduction. If you only want to pay £30/40 you are looking at the public gym in Greenwich (even has its own flume). But I think even that might cost more than that!
Dr epstein, one of the gps here very good practise in my experience,
Hoping t move toLimehouse soon.. are there any good doctors and dentists?
Does anyone know how this street got it's name???
Thank you
J Newell
