Hi, just wondering if you ever started a book club in the Kensal Rise/Queens Park area. I would be interested in joining.
Does anyone know of the Whitman,Kramer or Kirkwood family from the 1900s.
Or a Constance who gave birth in 1909 and adopted her son Charles to the Whitman family.
Does anyone know anything about Constance in 1909,who was possibly a nurse.
Also anything about a doctor or dentist with the surname Kramer or Kirkwood.
This would complete my sons research with our family tree.
Thank you in advance.
Hi I also lived in Burrows road at the same time. The brick air raid shelters were still in the road, we used to play in them. Perhaps our paths crossed at some time. Old Mr Newman would always be sitting behind the counter, on a Saturday morning we would be allowed half a block of walls ice cream with our coupons. Dance the chemist was on the opposite corner, and the doctors just round the corner in College road. A lot of us boys from Burrows road at that time were in the 8th Willesden scouts. Nobody well off but we managed.
It was a grocers shop owned and run by a Dublin man called Ted in the 1960s and early 70s . I t used to have an esso blue paraffin machine outside but that got burned out one day . Otherwise a lovely grocers .
There used to be an ironmongers/builders' supplies/household goods shop called Marshals, on the corner of Chamberlayne Road/Leigh Gardens in the 1960s. My Dad, who was a master builder, used it.
There was a greengrocers in Station Terrace Kensal Rise in the 1960s. Our family always referred to it as 'Tuffreys', but I don't know if that was the name of the shop, or just one of the chaps who worked there!
I remember it well but not unfortunately the name it was on the corner of keslake road and chamberlayne road it was there in the sixties and when my son was born in 1972. Boots was on the opposite corner. I remember there was in the main parade of shops David Greggsgrocers , Macfisheries. TIP TOP drycleaners .Isabel Cowleys flower shop further up beyond the postoffice on the corner of Chevening road.
it a okay place, i grow up here i know the bad boys how stand around look really secary but they are human like us they blood too be sides they
will not touch if you ain't do a problem with them
Remember me, or Ed. Lee or any of the others in Kensal Wanderers. Just a little way away now in Canada. Look forward to hear from you.
Cheers from the big land!
Any body remember Fred Bluffton had a daughter called Reiter lived in greyhound road in the 50's
I remember Valerie Cull she lived in College Road, and she was a very good runner, she wasn't a friend but I remember her, sorry cant give you any more info..
I used to go out with a boy from Burrows Road his name was Brian Keen,he had a brother called Peter who at the time went out with a girl called Brenda(I think) from Clifford Gardens, his Mum & Stepdad were really lovely,I often wonder what happened to him...memories.
I've lived here 23 years and no one has ever even looked at me the wrong way. There is crime as in all areas but it's confined and rarely affects the white middle classes, if that's what you're worried about!
I am afraid this library is closed down now, as part of brent's spending cuts,a great shame,i worked there from 1965-7, it was my first job!
After many years I finally escaped Kensal Green. It is a really nasty and unpleasant area. Dangerous, drab, boring and really unattractive. All the Victorian houses now have the obligatory side returns so ugly concrete boxes on the back. Skips everywhere and a dirty Tesco and chicken cottage. Plus all the betting shops. Don't get me started on the dog mess and litter!
Hello Mike are you my group on facebook north kensington and notting hill photo archives?
If you send me an email at blazenoelle'at'msn'dot'com I do know many people who lived in that area back in the 60's/70's.
all the best
I'm possibly moving to Kensal Green in the coming months and was wondering how safe it is, I've had a few friends who have passed on horror stories about the area and would like to get some opinions from people who live/have lived there.
I know each area of london has it's good and bad spot but I want to make sure this isn't particularly bad as say Dalston?
I lived in Kensal Green for many years, it is a dreadful area. We were burgled three times, once when we were in bed. My 11 year old son was mugged at knife point and we were threatened on College Road. There is constant building work, skips everywhere and decidedly unyummy mummies who can't afford Queens Park. The Tesco is dreadful and don't get me started on Chicken Cottage. Tube a pain as on weekends trains often terminate at Queens Park. I think it is a dirty rough suburb and boring!
I remember a lovely Irish Family that ran the shop opposite Kensal rise school. A husband and wife team that had beautiful daughters with very long hair who used to work in the shop after school or at weekends.
I was young at the time but my sister used to speak to the girls - I remember all the boys fancied Pauline who had long red hair.
Good and happy times in Kensal R
I would like to start one as well. If you two are both still looking, we three can begin one?
I'm looking for a reliable and trust worthy cleaner. Either once a week or every two weeks for around 3-4 hours.
No agencies please
i am afraid the library in bathurst gardens is now closed due to spending cuts.
I'm looking at moving into the area of Kensal Green on the basis that it's shifting in the right direction but being a couple of years behind Queens Park is more affordable.
First of all, as I don't know the area, is this area changing for the better?
And secondly, more specifically, does anyone have any comments about the South side of the railway (Wakeman/ Rainham Road)? I read to stay north of the railway line but I'm not sure when this was written and if still applicable. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance,
Hi lizzie, is your cleaner still available? I'm looking for someone for 2 hours per week in between Kensal green and rise.

If anyone knows of a good cleaner please contact me at
It was a chemist for many years, probably up to the mid 1950's and was known by the owners name G. Dance. Mr. Dance was a very old man and when he retired the shop was left empty for a few years until it re opened as a fruit and veg shop run by a man called Ted. This was active until the late 60/early 70's when he changed to shoe mending. This was not successful and closed down in the mid seventies. I lived next door from 1946 to 1971.

Our nanny is an Ofsted registered child minder, with current CRB checks and first aid training. She has cared for our daughter brilliantly for the last 4 months, taking her to the park everyday and to regular playgroups. She is affectionate, intelligent and fun.
Our nanny charges £10 pounds per hour (including taxes) - just £5 per hour for each family.

My name was Ivy Dickerson and I went to Chamberlayne Road School in the early 1950's. Mr Little was the headmaster and I am trying to locate Patricia Lazarus who was in my class. From a hobby of family research I have found that we may be cousins.

I would really appreciate any help regarding the O'Brien and Walsh families circa 1915-1940 in and around Burns Rd, Earlsmead Rd and Mordaunt Rd and the areas of Harlesden, Willesden and Kensal Green for the purposes of family history. I would be especially interested in help regarding a Winifred Ida O'Brien. If you would be kind enough to email me

For cheap office space have you tried the Disabled Living building on Harrow Road, W9? There are very good office spaces available at the top of the building. Many writers and small businesses are there last time I checked, so you would be in good working company.
There is an Iyengar centre in Randolph Avenue, W9 near the Maida Vale tube station. The teachers are excellent, very well trained for years before they teach. Wood floors, high ceilings, it's a treat to be in the building near the park. Remedial classes available too. Beginners, intermediate and advanced classes available all day everyday from 6 am - 8pm. I think the classes are around £11 . A bit pricey, but the teaching standard is very high.
Does anyone know a good iyengar yoga class in or around the area? I'm new to the area and want to find a good class?
I live in a spacious house in Kensal Green with 2 friends of mine. Unfortunately I have to move out, so I need to find someone interested in renting my room till September 2009.
It is a double bedroom, very large size and nicely decorated. The weekly price is 168£ (monthly 756£). All bills are excluded. (internet, electricity, BT, TV license, water and gas).
The ideal person would be someone aged 18-26, who either studies or works in London.
Kensal Green tube station is 2 mins away. Overground station Kensal Rise 7 mins away, while a bus stop (route 18) is right off the corner. Easy access to Queens Park, Nottinghill Gate and Ladbroke Grove areas.
The house is pretty big in size, having two bathrooms, a large kitchen and a living room area, as well as a private garden area.
If interested please email me at
I used him to change a couple of rads, but think he does everything. Very reasonable and turns up on time.

I moved to Kensal Green and felt quite anxious at first, but I often walk home very late, around midnight or one am, and now feel quite relaxed. I really appreciate people leaving their outside lights on, it makes me feel safer and lights up the street that little bit more. But in 18 months I have had no problems and am happy in the area.
I run a small broadcast design agency, and am currently looking to move my business to Queen's Park/Kensal Rise, as my son goes to school in the area. It's just me an my computer, basically, so just need (space for)a desk, a chair and some storage units.
I'm a 32 years old italian graphic designer (Female), looking for a double room in the Kensal green/rise area starting from December. I know it's a bit faraway, but you never know.. :)
