65 Campbell Road

Hi Dawn ,

I was just looking at my fathers birth certificate and it gave the address 65 Campbell Road in the 30’s so I googled it and came up with interesting reading , I have ordered the Jerry White book Campbell Bunk to learn more.

My father always said that you had to keep to your own part of the road and not go through the bollards even the women or you would be in big trouble

House numbering on Stonefield Street, Islington

Does anyone know why there are numbers 10A, 11A and 12A on Stonefield St (at the Richmond Avenue end) which don't seem to fit with the rest of the numbering on the street? Just wondering if anyone who used to live in the area remembers anything about the history of the houses.

The Blythe family

Dear Robert,

After just losing one our family members: Lenny Mead. I went online to try to get some background for his funeral thats due to take place 28/02/17. When we cleared his house out we found a book "The worst street in London" Campbell bunk. After seeing this site I see your post. Its funny how things go as one of our family married into your family: Johnny Ellingham married Emmy Blythe. My Nan was Helen (Nell) Ellingham who had sisters Flo & Pat.

As I'm one of the young ones (60) I can only talk about memories shared to me by my Father who has sadly gone.

When you get this it would be good to see if we can fill in blank spaces, but as most of them are gone now we might be able to piece together things.

Thanks

Michael Carey

The Bunk

I lived in Haden court in the 1960's. There was the old Haden Court Estate which I lived in and then we moved into the new Haden court estate.

It wax parallel to Fonthill Rd N4 but it's address was Biggerstaff Street.

The area was known as the Bunk which is the name of a book written about it.

Does anybody know the actual year Haden Court was built?

Campbell Road map of old

Hi Dawn

Try looking at this historical map overlay : phone.booth.lse.ac.uk

At the top of the overlay it shows Campbell Rd as was, at right angles to Lennox Rd, which is 50% still standing. My great grandfather lived in both roads in the early 1800s.

Did you find any photos, my family were farriers in those days.

My Grandfather was Alfred Blyth, his wife was Mary but everyone called her "Sis" and the children, Alfie, Freddie, Stanley, Billy, Mary, Emmy, and my mother Rosie Blyth. They moved to No70 Durham Road later on after the war and my Grandmother stayed there until it was demolished in the early 1970s.

16 Stonefield Street, Islington 1911

A bit more information. The family was Corscadden (George and Bridget), they originally came from Ireland. Their married daughter lived with them, her name was Mary (married to Cyril Walters) Cyril and Mary had a daugher, Doris, born sometime in 1911/12. I have no idea how long they lived there or when they moved away. Email:

I am exactly the same, I paid for my treatment after having had treatment by him when I was a teenager. I thought maybe this time he would ensure my teeth came out straight, and because he was offering the service at a discounted price from the other orthodonists. However, after my braces havoing been removed, I realize there was a reason he was offering at such a low -price - because he simply was not going to committ to doing a good job. I don't know what to do as I feel that my teeth are in exactly the same shape they were in when I got the braces in - I don't really know who to complain to.
