Welcome to London Highams Park

STUDLEY AVE. / SELWYN AVE. SCHOOL

I used to live in Studley Ave. in the 1950s and went to Oak Hill Primary School and Selwyn Ave. Boys School.

My parents moved to Cornwall and I lost touch with all the children I knew. I wondered if anybody may remember me or some of the people I knew. The following names come to mind - Robert Bowler; Tony Sweet; John Mansfield; Paul Curtis - there were a lot more but unfortunately they do not come to mind. Headmaster at Selwyn Ave. was a MR. Glascow.

Any information to enable a follow up would be much appreciated.

I Dont Recognise this Description

Any objective person would not recognise this description of Highams Park. It is a pleasant locality with good access to the City and to parkland and lakes. It's close to Epping Forest and it has good road connections.

Tue Nov 08

Regal Cinema

The ex-Regal Cinema is a Grade II listed building. It's a good example of Art Deco architecture. It should be restored properly and then it would be an asset to Highams Park.

There is no chance that, as a listed building, it will be knocked down. Instead the present or new owners should restore it.

Oh dear..... The description you give is pretty grim... I wish you could have seen it when I lived their in the 1950's... I went to Selwyn avenue school.... went to the Regal when it was still a Movie house..... I lived in a flat just around the corner of the 'Royal oak Pub on Hale end road... Very quite in those days... no cars to speak of ... Epping forest, and the Kingfishers swimming pool.... many happy days...

My mother and her father used to sell flowers + in Highams Park, in the early 1900's. I recall she said they used to sit on the steps of a bank. Are their any photographs available of the area near the station which may show them selling their wares? Please email

Prefabs- Highams Park

My mothe'rs friend Florrie & Stan lived in one of these prefabs from new. We visited there often from where we lived in Chingford and thought what a great modern home they had there. Florrie and Stan lived there until their passing in the 70s. I have their surname in my records.

Research About Prefabs in Highams Park

I am carrying out research on our family history to write a book about how our lives have changed over the generations. I am primarily writing for our own families younger generation, but I think it could have a wider appeal.

My family lived in a Prefab at 9 Fishers Avenue, The Highams Park and my Grandmother and Grandad lived in a prefab nearby in the 1948?-1950s. My mother (Eleanor May Simpson then becoming Warwick) had two children (boy 3 and girl 4) and lost her husband in the Second World War. I am trying to find anyone who remembers my family or who remembers the Prefabs or where I can find out more information about them? Also, we had a very close family friend who lived nearby, he was a Butcher and in the Salvation Army - I would be interested in any information about him if anyone remembers.

Please contact me on:

New writers.

I am a very new writer soon to be published in March 2011. So, this is my plea. I am looking for a critical eye. A person able to pick over gramma and spelling. My work is a polished structure that needs a buff. It will be £30.00 for a grade A English boff, who kindly reads over my science fiction scribble. Your time would be appreciated, as I do have a deadline. It is 22,600 words, so only small. You must be trustworthy and in Highamspark. More work for larger items will follow!

Highams Park: Regal

If we are all honest it is a crap hole. It makes Highams Park look tacky.

However, if your a bloke who enjoys snooker, it isn't a bad little place for your bored afternoons.

On the other hand, I wouldn't class this as a bar/club. If you want a decent night out, you are better off going to Chans or Rising Sun. Regals ok to go in for a few cheap drinks to end your night.

The owner Tony, is a nice man, however I wouldn't trust him.

It would be better off changed into a cinema, that would be lovely, although may encourage more teens.

Mon May 26

Highams Park: Overall

Overall Highams Park is a lovely area, with perhaps one to many take aways. But, you have a Tan shop, Nail shop, Hair and Beauty, Bakers, Antique shop, Post Office, Bike shop, Florists, Card shops, Nice Cafes, Doctors, Chemist, School and good public transport, Over head to the central line. 275, 212 and W16.

Mon May 26

Highams Park: Take Away Shops

Take Away Shops: Right lets clear this up. I am not just a greasy teenager saying this but Morleys is a great chicken shop. Favourite Chicken round the corner is awful and unclean. I have become friendly with the Morleys Husband and wife and they are nice people. It is clean and I have never had food poisining etc.

The best Indian is The Avenue, if you like mild currys such as tikka masala as I think it is smoother and tastier. If you are into harsher currys, Purbani is the one for you. Shelz, is not good. Over priced and small amounts.

I am not a huge Chinese fan but Gourmet House has always been fine. And I'm not sure the name but over the tracks there is ment to be a nice chinese, apparently it doesnt look all that but tastes great.

Best chip shop. Highland Fish bar. The Frying Plaice is good, although sometimes the chips burn, but when they don't, they are just as nice as Highland, maybe even nicer.

Mon May 26

Highams Park: The place itself.

Highams Park is a lovely place to live. Being a teenager myself (18), I would say it isn't the most dangerous place. If your kid is the type to get themselves involved with the wrong people then perhaps it is not a great idea to live here. Myself, I did not attend Highams Park school so I don't know many people around, only the odd few from playing down the park on Vincent Road from a young age. I you keep away from the trouble, you will be fine, and it isn't that bad anyway, just like any other area.

Excluding that, the lake is beautiful and Highams Park has some amazing features. I would most definatly move there and ignore what you hear about all the trouble, although i'll admit it isn't as nice as it once was, but I will say I personally think the teenage vandalism has cooled down a great deal.

The italien is very good. v. friendly staff. Actually all of the restaurants in Highams Park, especially Shelz and First Avenue, that I have been to are really good and certainly worth investigating

Sun Oct 14

re: could you send me a map on my e-mail of where Highams park is

You won't need a map to find Highams Park. Just follow the smell of the many, many takeaways, get in line behind the gangs of muggers that seem to swarm here (you get even get the train here for nothing just as they do). Finally ask someone to point you in the direction of the area of London with absolutely no sign of any police anywhere at anytime (apart from the occasional 'hobby bobby') and like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, you'll be magically led to the Utopia that is Highams Park.

Mon Oct 08

I've only just moved here so haven't been to the Italian. I think there's plenty of room for small 'foody' businesses. Some tea rooms, a bakery, a cheese shop perhaps.....

Thu Oct 04

what is the Italian restaurant like in Highams Park? could there be any room for in the area for Butchers/fish mongers/Bakers considering the amount of supermarkets there are around

Reply: HELP! Epping or Highams Park?

Hello,

I live in Highams Park and attend Highams Park school. I would say if your boyfriend is young (18-29) and enjoys nights out etc he should choose Highams Park as it has reasonable nightlife especially on a Fri and Sat night and there is a train station from which he can get into central London in around 25 mins. However if your boyfriend likes to keep himself to himself and would like a quiet area with not much going on and slightly posher, he should choose Epping. P.s. It also depends on where he works- I would say it is much easier to get to places from Highams Park in my personal opinion... It is also very near South Woodford, Walthamstow etc. Hope this helps!! x

Hi Highams Park.

I was born in 1971 in Castle Avenue (my Father delivered me) and we lived there for 5 years before we moved to Devon. It was number 21 and it was flat 5, which was the top flat facing the road. Does anyone know if this building still exists or if it's been replaced with a recent building. The Google maps satellite takes me in fairly close but I can't be sure.

Many thanks.
