Is anyone researching the history of Thames Poly F.C. and also Thames Poly Ladies football team. The Thames Poly sports ground during the 1970's and 1980's was at Kidbrooke Lane (now Greenwich University and shared with Blackheath RFC. If you have any information I would be pleased to hear from you, Tony. email: tonyjan@talktalk.net
I know it's a long time ago now, but does anyone have memories or mementos of the ELTHAM DODGERS later called THE DODGERS BASEBALL TEAM of the 1950's. They were very successful around this time and played at Welling Way, Falconwood before relocating to the Country Club facilities in Crown Lane, Bromley which, in turn, was taken over by the Blue Circle Sports Club. Please feel free to email me directly or post back to My Eltham. Many thanks, Tony. email: tonyjan@talktalk.net

Very much looking forward to the regenearation of Eltham High Street with a new Cinema and restaurant complex and the redevelopment of the Grove Market Place with new shops and homes. Eltham could still do with another food supermarket to compliment Sainsburys Lidl and other local businesses.

We are asking TFL London Buses to seriously consider extending route B16 Bexleyheath Garage to Kidbrooke Station via Eltham. From Kidbrooke Station to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Woolwich Town Centre/Woolwich Arsenal DLR Station via Kidbrooke Park Road, Rochester Way (Brook Estate), Well Hall Roundabout, Well Hall Road, Shooters Hill (Brook Village Estate), Baker Road, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and on to Woolwich Town Centre and Woolwich Arsenal DLR Station. Providing much needed new links to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Woolwich Town Centre for parts of Eltham including the Westmount Road Area and Rochester Way and the Brook Estate. If anyone else agrees with this suggestion please contact TFL Buses Customer Services Team. Thank you.

I've lived near Eltham High Street for 5 years and I've never seen any evidence of gangs! The closest it gets is kids standing around outside McDonalds but they're gone by about 6pm (and some of them are loud, but they're decent kids actually). I think it's a great place to live and my relatives always agree with me when they come to stay :)
It is one of the safest places to live in South East London in my opinion (I have lived in Brockley, Catford and Forest Hill and Eltham is by far the friendliest neighborhood, and I always walk everywhere so get to know the areas very well). I live near the high street where it is quite busy though, so I'm not sure what it's like in more residential-only areas. I've lived here for 5 years now and people round here really seem to care about the area and would always step in if there was ever any 'trouble'. It's also improved a lot since I first moved here - there's been a lot of improvement on the high street and there are good restaurants now so it feels busier and safer in the evenings. There's nowhere in Eltham that I would call a 'no-go' area unlike in other places. I think you will like living here.

Not True..
I moved here almost 4 years ago from SW... I am a single young woman and have found this town to be quiet, safe to walk home from station at late hours and plenty of useful shops.
Has a slight 'chav'-ness (yet harmless) air about it at one end of town and simply beautiful the other (well hall end)!
Lots of lovely houses with big gardens on offer - and Eltham palace is really lovely to visit...
ignor these rotters who try to put u off - good Luck
looks like it is about to go under construction . The picturehouse company have taken it on- to be reopened as ELTHAM PICTUREHOUSE - puts us on the map with Greenwich picturehouse, Brixton Ritzy, Curzon Soho and Clapham!

We are asking TFL to extend the B16 bus route Bexleyheath to Kidbrooke Station to Woolwich Common (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) via Kidbrooke Park Road, Shooters Hill Road, Strathenden Road, Blackheath Royal Standard, Charlton Road, Charlton Village, Littleheath, Woowich Barracks and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
To provide more areas of Eltham including Rochester Way and Westmount Road areas and more of Kidbrooke and Charlton Road with a direct service to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. While also providing new direct bus links to Thomas Tallis School, Kidbrooke Station and Eltham. There is a real need to improve bus services for Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Thomas Tallis School also for the Kidbrooke and Eltham areas. We hope to gain further support from local people, local councillors and local MP's to get TFL and London Central to extend the B16 bus route to the Queen Elizaberh Hospital.
Route 321 Sidcup (Footscray Tesco) to New Cross via Sidcup Main Road, New Eltham and Eltham becomes a 24 hour service from the 10 October 2009 with buses running every 30 minutes throughout the night on all nights of the week.
Route N21 Trafalgar Square to Sidcup (Footscray) gets diverted at Blackfen to Bexleyheath via route 132. So from the 10 October 2009 route N21 becomes Trafalgar Square to Bexleyheath and will no longer serve Sidcup as this will be covered by the 24 hour service on route 321.
Thanks for the reassurance Steve! Looking forwards to the Rising Sun opening again.
Whats the name or telephone nymber for that cash converter type of shop on Eltham High St? My email address is
Hi my name is steve and I am the new manager of the Rising Sun I would just like to post that we are only closed until august 26th for a well needed refurbishment and that we are not turning the pub into a young persons venue
we are keeping the old characteristics of the pub and upgrading the interior to a standard that our customers deserve
we will remain a community pub with low level music and a food offering until 9pm every evening
and will hopefully provide a place for people from all age groups and walks of life to enjoy a drink and a snack and some decent conversation in a relaxed atmosphere
I am 51 and have been in the trade for the last 30 years I was born and bred in Newcastle and have spent the last 19 years in swale and medway as a publican
we will reopen on 26th of August and I hope everyone will enjoy the new look rising sun
Regards
Steve Hedley (manager)
There are some gangs in eltham but its the same anywhere else. It is a nice area, its hardly your peckham or catford. Middle park avenue isnt the best area but houses around well hall road are lovely.
Hope I helped
Are there any art clubs for teenagers in eltham? please reply, thankyou x
Hey, I was looking for some art clubs in Eltham, for teenagers, and I haven't found any. If you know any could you please reply. Thankyou x
Gordon Primary school
& I think st.marys is good too.
Hallo, Marty!
I saw your message, thank you! Do you recall in which league they played - it was obviously local? Do recall any names of your footballing colleagues including Dave Lewis? And when did the club fold?
Hey I played for them in 1968 /69 they had 2 teams, we played on blackheath, Charlton Park allways on Sat afternoons
I moved to Eltham a couple of years ago and I've been quite happy with my decision. You get decent houses for your money, there are lots of nice green spaces and transportation links are pretty good. Most people I've met are also very nice, either in a well mannered and educated or in a down-to-earth kind of way.
However, if you want to move here you need to be willing to put up with a few things:
- Chavs. Few of them live in Eltham proper, but many find their way to Eltham from Kirbrooke, Mottingham, Blackfen etc. and make the high street appear quite downmarket
- Traffic. Eltham is not particularly congested, but it's crisscrossed by busy mainroads and rat runs. It also came as a shock to me how aggressively people drive here compared to N London where I used to live.
- Greenwich council. Don't expect the council to be particularly interested in improving the area, including problems related to the points above.

To Urban Rambler, I don't understand your point about me getting out more! What you say about Eltham being an important part of the Green Chain walking network is true and I have covered parts of it with my camera. I have also enjoyed photographing Avery Hill Park and plan to visit Manor Park off the Lee High Road. And lets not forget Eltham Pleasaunce with its lovely Tudor Barn. And views from near the Severndroog Castle looking south towards Eltham are impressive on a lovely summer day. I have also enjoyed playing Lawn Bowls at the Eltham BC which has a lovely secluded Green.
Do you have the loose-leaf book "No through Road" which covers selected walks throughout the UK. Since I am restricted to public transport, I can only recommend the walks out of Newington, Sole Street, and Wye. But if one has a car there are many other lovely walks available where a rambler can enjoy lovely scenary and real fresh air.
It is definitely possible to have a normal life in Eltham! Thousands of people do. There a lots of nice streets in Eltham, especially in the vicinity of the parks and Well Hall Pleasaunce, and south of the High Street. Like anywhere, it does have its pockets of problems and selection of "neighbours from hell" but it is not definitely not a dangerous area. I have always felt safe.
The High Street has suffered a bit in the recession, but there are some good local businesses and local restaurants, and a positive point is that that it is not overrun my hoards of drunken youths at weekends like Bexleyheath or Bromley.
It might not be Hampstead, Dulwich Village or Blackheath - but it certainly isn't Peckham, Brixton, New Cross, Woolwich, Thamesmead, etc either!
I don't live in Eltham but I know that there is nothing wrong with Eltham. There are some parts of Eltham which are really nice. Every area has got its rough side where young kids hang around, including posh Chelsea. Not sure who you have been speaking to but Eltham is nowhere near Brixton or Peckham!
I have to move to Eltham with my job however many people are telling me is a bad place to be lots of trouble etc
I never tend to believe such rumors but im not a young guy anymore and just want a normal life
can anyone re assure me
thanks
I buy lots of books to read on the train, nothing too taxing, mostly detective stories etc (not romance books).
Would anyone be interested in a book swap?
When will Greenwich Council grant planning permission on the old Odeon Cinema at Well Hall in Eltham. This building has been left to fall in to a state of dis-repair and is becoming an eye sore like so many other empty buildings around the London Borough of Greenwich which are left empty and neglected. Bring this building and other empty buildings back into community use or sell them for redevelopment. But please do not leave them for years on end to be left empty and vandalised and a meeting area for groups causing anti social behaviour. Lets see these buildings starting to be brought back to life in 2009 please.
I teach a lacemaking class on a Friday morning - Greenwich College are cutting the class as from September and I am looking for another venue in the Eltham area. Must have disabled access. Class numbers around 10 - 12 students. e:mail -
Just seen this post, I am researching Charlie Fisher and wonder if you have any more info on him, pics etc.
hi fella im gay also , wanna add me on msn ?
www.GAMD.org - Greenwich Academy of Music and Drama, based in Eltham. Fantastic.
Looks like it is nearly ready with the builders starting to fit out the interior so openeing must be a few weeks at most.
Good to see Woolworth's was not empty for long. Shame that it was filled by a 99p shop. Not sure the high street needs many more of these, but still better than an empty shop.
From today 24/01/09 Route 132 is now Bexleyheath to North Greenwich Station (02) via Eltham, Kidbrooke Rochester Way, Sun In The Sands and Greenwich Peninsula. Providing a more direct service to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) and new links to Bexleyheath.
Do we know when the new Lidl Store in Eltham is due to open?
Lets hope the building work on the new Lidl Store is completed soon. So this new store can open for the people of Eltham and surrounding areas. Eltham desperately needs another affordable supermarket to compliment Sainsburys.
Hi
I am involved in a production of fiddler on the roof and we are looking for more people to be in the show. If you would be interested email me on
I was really pleased with Mr Morris he worked to a high standard and was very genuine. We had a large extension and the work was top quality.
Good quote but not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for.
More than happy to spread the word.
A good all round builder.
You can contact him on **** ****6 or
dont ever go to hair on the green, I like pia bangs or in well hall road, stevie bs, which is very reasonably priced.
Try the leisure centre in greenwich, on the way to greenwich town centre, the arches. its smaller and quieter than the eltham centre and is accesable via the 286 bus or car
Bella Rosa in Eltham High street is a lovely family italian restaurant, please try it. Also there are many shops in eltham high Street, and there are many community groups, just look in the eltham centre or enquire at st marys community rooms.
welcome to eltham x
Yes it is good news that route 132 (Bexleyheath-Bexley-Eltham Station) is being extend to North Greenwich via Kidbrooke Rochester Way and Sun In The Sand from January 2009. I hope TFL/East Thames Buses will increase the frequency on route 132 at the same time. To make route 132 a fast reliable efficient frequent service.
Route 132 will also be serving the 02 Arena at North Greenwich so will be a vital local bus link in the evenings and weekends as well as during the peak hours.
It has been reported in the local press this week that bus route 132 (Bexleyheath - Bexley - Eltham) will be extended to run to North Greenwich in January 09.
Great news to have a more direct link and alternative to the 161 to reach the Jubilee line station.
The Eltham and Kidbrooke area needs more supermarkets so lets hope the Lidl store opens soon in Eltham and more new supermarkets follow in Eltham and Kidbrooke very soon.
When is the old Odeon Cinema at Well Hall in Eltham going to be regenerated. It has been empty for years and years and allowed to fall in to disrepair and get vandalised. It is about time Greenwich Council allowed someone to refurbished the building and bring it back to use as soon as possible as either retail units, business units or housing units or a mixture of all three. Planners have a duty to get empty buildings back in to use as soon as possible so they do not fall in to a state of disrepair and become dangerous. Lets hope the builders move in soon and bring the building back in to use.

You must get out more. Eltham is a hub in the Green Chain walking network, and full of prime open spaces, woodlands and parks.
How sad that it has gone. I remember as a 14 year old in the late 1950's swimming in the freezing water (Once at 54F). The place where I first discovered that girls were interesting!
Do a google search for Eltham Choral Society. I think they practice at St Lukes on Westmount Road. Have walked past a few times when they have been practising and they sound in fine voice!
i moved to Eltham in December and love singing but i dont know of any choirs active in the area. Can someone suggest where I can find an active choir in the area?
I can recommend an excellent carpenter. We renovated our whole house and he did most of the work. Fitted cabinets, wood floors, doors and handmade kitchen. I can't recommend him enough. He is local too. My e-mail address is
I have been checking on this and planning permission has been approved for the boundary issues, so hopefully may see some movement in there soon
Come and visit the Italian Market in Passey Place, Eltham on Sunday, 10am - 4pm. There will be a range of stalls selling fresh pasta, breads, oils, meats, cheeses, wines ....
Come and say Ciao!
Work has stopped on the new Lidl building in Eltham High Street. Apparently this is due to a boundary dispute. Does anyone have more detailed information about this?
All gounded to a halt now because of the boundary issues, so may be later than summer now :-(

Try Eltham Choral Society who rehearse every Thursday 7.30 pm - 9.30 pm at St Lukes Church, Westmount Road, SE9. An SATB choir who stage a concert at the end of each term. Look at their website.
I would like to see more shops on Eltham High Street opened until at least 8 pm on Monday to Saturdays and 10 am until 4 pm on Sundays. To make more use of Eltham High Street/Eltham Town Centre and to keep it as a local thriving High Street. We need to keep good local High Streets in the area for people to shop at. With good bars and pubs on Eltham High Street you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat after shopping.
Can anyone help me with swimming lessons for a very scared 4 year old girl. I take my daughter swimming every week, but she just walks in the shallow end and out again. I liked the old Eltham Pool, and so did she because the little pool was just right. Now the new Eltham Center's little pool, is too big, too noisey and always full of bigger children. I have tried to avoid times when the swimming lessons are on so it isn't busy, but it always seems full. The large pool is just too cold for her, and I have a 2 year old as well and the large pool isn't suitable for him. Please advise, 1 to 1 would be good for the beginning. Thanks Reply email.
Gordon School is a wonderful school. Lots of events, my son loves it!
We are asking Transport For London Buses (TFL) to extend the B16 bus route Bexleheath Garage to Kidbrooke Station via Eltham from Kidbrooke Station to Woolwich Common Queen Elizabeth Hospital via Blackheath Royal Standard and Charlton Village. Not only will this provide new direct bus links to Eltham for the Charlton Village area it will also provide a better bus service for Thomas Tallis School on Kidbrooke Park Road and interchange with other bus routes at Blackheath Royal Standard. It will also provide more areas of Eltham including (Westmount Road, Eltham Hill and Eltham Road) also Kidbrooke and Charlton with a direct bus service to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. A much needed bus service improvement.
Lets hope the old Odeon Cinema at Well Hall Cricus will be renovated in the very near future to bring this classic building back into community use. It must not be left any longer to fall into further decline and be vandalised. Greenwich Council Planners leave empty buildings empty and disused far to long these days. When they could be renovated and used again. So please pass planning permission on this building as soon as possible.
Good to know the Eltham Lidl Store will be built by the summer then with construction well under way.
Does anyone remember Eltham & Ladywell United FC of the 1960s? I recall that they played in black & white stripped shirts with black shorts, but I can not recall if they played on Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings; or in which league they played. However, I vaguely recall they had a 'star' half-back named David Lewis. I would be most grateful to learn of their history, awards and went they ceased to exist.
May be quicker than the summer as the walls are on the way up now also :-)
Thanks. Lets hope the Lidl Store is open for customers by the summer.
Well the foundations has been done so hopefully not to long now
