I remember all the things you mentioned
I lived off plough road in stock wood street and going to sunday school at st Peter's.i agree they did kill off communities
and a way of life.
I also worked at Gartons as did my dad who worked there for 40 years.
I know this is a pretty long shot but I am trying to find a guy called Ian, his surname I'm not sure of but it may be Deans, Denes or something like that.
He lived in Balham in and around 1967 when he was about eighteen or nineteen. His dad was a copper and the only other information I have is that Ian and some mates went on holiday to Ostend in 1967, possibly 1966.
Not much for anyone to go on but you never know.
Cheers, Roger
I grew up near Wandsworth common and had a Mr Doughty for science when I attended Graveney secondary school on tooting. I later transferred to Spencer Park School in 1957 and left in 1960, during which time Mr. Doughty joined Spencer Park, although I did not attend any of his classes. Mr N.C. Fischer was a sports master who allowed me to use the swimming pool when I was recovering from a skiing accident on a school trip to Norway. Two of my cousins also attended the school during my time there. I was born in Woking in 1944 where my mother was evacuated from Battersea for the birth. Back at home I experienced the war time air raids aimed at Clapham junction.
I went there two and i wss in reds mr wallice

re Hi All, I was bought up in Battersea in the fiftys and sixtys my dad had a pub in Nine elms lane nick named the wedge due to its shape but was really called the steam packet the brewery was Meux. it was located just behind the gas works and opposite was a bomb site the pub had two rooms at the top that had been fire bombed during the war and had never been restored as kids it was quite scary to go up there, we used to have to use the public baths down the road. After the pub dad took on a shop at 127 battersea park road opposite Battersea polytechnic and filled it with junk,it was painted blue and called the Bargain shop, does anyone remember it ?.I went to Spencer Park school,it would be great to hear from any of the mates Cavern Curruthers, Harrold McLucus, Abdul Kwaja, Peter Potter, we were born in 1947,would be great to hear from anyone of that time. hope they did well.

Hi Philipa
My name is Darren and i,m a 33 guy, working in London as an A&E charge nurse who moved to Clapham with my partner 18 months ago. I am currently looking to change my career slightly to improve my home-work life balance so that i can not only spend more quality time at home but also persue some of my previous interests. I used to be strongly involved with a local youth theatre - something i very much enjoyed. I noticed that you were looking earlier in the year for a local theatre/drama group and wondered how you got on and/or had any pointers?
would be good to hear from you as i'm always open to chatting to or meeting like minded/interesting people.

What sort of position is German over a coffee ???
Hi Everyone!
A friend of mine and I are running a mixed group book club for people in their 20s and 30s from Wandsworth / Clapham Junction / Putney / Clapham. We are looking for new members (girls and guys), especially more men to have more or less of an even balance. However, numbers are limited.
Its fairly a relaxed chilled group. Each member gets a turn to choose a book, anything from classics to science fiction....why? This is so we can truely appreciate (or ridicule!) the types of books published :)
Our next meeting is on Monday 21st June 2010 and the book we are going to discuss is called 'The Kite Runner' by Khaled Hosseini.
For further information, please email me by clicking here ->

hi... haven't been on here for a while.... whats happened to the old battersea page?? I take it that is why I found you all here. anyway, looking for information on the following families from 1940's and 50's - Cook, Rule, Barnes, and any info on a chap who used to work in a garage of some sort on Lavender Hill. He rode a motorbike and as far as I know used to fix bikes and cars for a living. All I have on him is that his name was Matthew, Middle name Thomas and family name began with HA. Would have been born around 1905. Thought you or your mates might recall something...

Hi there,
I am looking for someone to give singing lessons in Clapham Junction. Any tips appreciated!
Hi my friend lives in Eland road, it branches off of Lavender Hill. The house which was ment to have a poltergeist in it does not back onto a mental hospital. I think the house was Nom.10?
We need a spacious flat/house on the 7th, 8th and 9th of November 2008. It can be a loft, a warehouse or a spacious flat. It doesn’t need more than one bedroom, but the open space or the living room should be spacious.
Due to low budget we are only able to offer £100 for the the three days and a copy of the film once completed.
If interested, get in touch for further information.

I really can't remember much about him now, he came to mind as I was talking about the the pie stall on Chelsea Bridge. I met him when I was about 17, I remember he used to have a motorbike and sometimes would pick me up from work. I had just started work for a firm of accountants just off The Strand. Probably only a couple of times, he turned up there to take me home. Much to my embarrassment, as think they invited him in and gave him a cup of tea. I remember he worked as a carpet fitter. A few years back one of my cousins had some new carpet fitted, and the person who turned up to do the fitting was him - think she said he was married, with children and living in the Surrey area. I think he was part of a group of boys, not that I had much to do with them. Think some of them lived around Ethelburga Street. I will ask my cousin as she grew up with some of them - do you remember any names. Think Brian would be about 63/65 now.
I videoed the Elvis Impersonators as we were out on saturday night. So watched it last night and can tell you that the winner was someone called Shawn Klush from Pennsylvania. As the others said, think the best one won.
I am a well qualified Pilates instructor who does home visits. I have owned two studios, worked with doctors, physios doing various rehab. If you would like to know more please feel free to email me on

I post to angel but got no response del did too, when you say relatives veiw the site &find nothig much on Battersea well I veiwed for sometime & found it great laughter humour we cannot talk of Battersea things all the time can we ? But you others I post topics On here we like we Are not mind readers or entertainners but those who sit having a moan at us or the topics should put something of their own on to be Frank I don't Give a damm about those who donot Contribute & sit moaning one gets fed up with someone coming on posting criticing our topics then go off, I say to them Get stuffed. on BB we Can say or discuss what we like to talk about its not just for one age group we all have memories of different years of our life so my friend says I can post about any subject I like No spiteful postings will be allowed on his by moaners sitting at home expecting us to read their minds as were on the Batterse site by Some who caused trouble on there . We Really donot want those
Can anyone tell me the name of the guy that won the Elvis contest so that I can keep a look out for him in Oz.
We have had a heap of Elvis impesonaters out here, with the best one being an American Max Pelicano.

If Brian is the person I am thinking of he was one of our Atherton St Mob as he lived in Battersea Park Road just opposite our street so we were his closest playmates.
He actually lived above Tesco's, hence his very original nickname 'Tesco'. The door to the flat was in an alleyway between Tesco's and Joe Mist's the best wet fish shop I have ever seen. The Gayes were a very quiet family-I can't ever remember seeing his mum and dad although he could have had a sister. He went to William Blake at the same time as me but might have been in a different year.
Does this sound like the same person. Don't know about his uncle owning that very famous coffee stall on
Chelsea Bridge though.
Rog
PS I have actually searched for him on F/Utd several times, without luck.
