My wife and I first met in the Black and White Milk Bar
In about 1956. We remember All the landmarks, The Savoy with good acts and many more. We spent our younger days hanging out in the places mentioned. Lots of old memories now. Wonder who is still around.
was at the other night when this group came in wearing blue bassball caps with loukado written on the sides, they bought their drinks and sat down and drunk it, then they left, never saw them say anything to anyone in the pub or among themselves, well, apart from when they ordered their drinks, now i cant get this image out of my head, does anyone know what it is about?

Hello......Just read your message. I also suffered at Rathfern Road circa 1945 under Miss Standring(?) and thence to Dalmain Road. We lived above Saunders bakery opposite St Dunstan's, near where the buses turned around. You recall any of this?
Hey Brian....Just read your memory of the '52 smog - recall that day well. We were sent home (either Dalmain or Dulwich, can't remember) at lunchtime and took forever walking back to Stanstead Road in that yellow stuff. We lived opposite St Dunstan's school. Perhaps you remember the bakery?
Does anyone know what the building used to be that now houses the Salvation Army on Catford Broadway?
It's number 33 (near Barclays Bank) and has some old writing on the brick work on the side of the building - think it's known as a London Ghost Sign??
I went to the Saturday morning pictures at Catford every week. I loved it. Lived in Farley Road until 1962 then moved to kent.
Anyone that may remember me or have photos of Catford in the 50's I would love to hear from them.

Oh so you're a middle class white girl so you should know i guess? What a joke, born and grew up around Catford, and its not a bed of roses. I am inclined to agree with people in this post about not being scared of young people, as I am probably the exact type of young black male that gets stereo typed despite the fact that I help little old ladies with their shopping instead of robbing them. But lets not have any illusion, Catford has a high crime rate, a high poverty rate, one of the worst housing estates in south london. I know of many people that have died, violently, through gun crime and more in Catford that do not make the news. Catford is one of those places that if you close your eyes to it, you will not notice the depressing undertone. It is a land of social exclusion and rebels without a cause. You see, the main point is, Catford can be seen through many different perceptions. I can also appreciate the other views, but that does not mean there is not a massive issue in Catfo
Hello, I have tried to email you but am unable to. Please contact me on

What happened to the so called regeneration? It could be a great area if only the council and borough were bothered. Its about time things changed for the better. If only we could all get together or sign a petition or something. Any ideas?
I absolutely agree. What happened to the so called regeneration. It could be a great area if only the council and borough were bothered. Its about time things changed for the better

This restaurant does really tasty food and very well priced. Near to Boots optician opposite Argos on the High Street.
I agree, it's no different to any other parts of London and Catford has a lot to offer with local shops and markets. The new Mexican restaurant near Boots optician is really tasty and well priced as is Ciabatta the cafe just a door away. If residents use local businesses you'll soon see a wider variety -don't forget other parts of London such as Brixton used to have a really bad rep and not many nice shops/restaurants and look how far it has come - with a lot of help from the local council. We just need Lewisham council to do the same and invest and it is happening although they don't always get it right.
There are a few salons on Catford Broadway - Nails & Beauty which has been there for 10 years (blue front) and Safi which has recently opened (yellow front). Tried Nails & Beauty and would recommend.
Hello, if you're still looking for a Martial Arts Club near you, I can recommend Shaolin Culture. My son has been going there for 6 years and loves it. Child friendly and great for adults to, I do Tai Chi, my son does Shaolin Kung Fu.
I only recently found out they demolished the old Catford dog track so I guess they had to provide a replacement, hence all the betting shops!
I used to do a morning paper round in that area posh houses much better than where we lived
I was born and grew up in Catford and also remember well the places mentioned. It was the Lewisham Hippodrome, later the Eros cinema, later demolished and replaced by that concrete monstrocity Eros House, next door was the Queens cinema and on the corner of Sangley Road was the ABC Plaza cinema. Funny thing I worked on Eros House when they built it and remember walking home one night in the smog that was about 1968 I think when the bay of pigs crisis happened all the guys on the site were listening to the radio as it unfolded. Timpsons coaches was up by the Black and White milkbar and me and my mum used to book a trip now and then. I remember the blackboards outside with the trips advertised in coloured chalks all in fancy writing, they were absorbed into National Coaches later. In the war it was taken over by the War Department, my Dad worked there preparing trucks and equipment for the army, before he went to Woolwich Arsenal.
It seems you have partly answered your own question. The old St Lawrences church stood in Catford Broadway on the opposite corner to the Catford Theatre it was built in 1887 and sadly demolished in 1968 to make way for a car park of all things! The church was a prominent landmark and if you were travelling by bus you asked the conductor for 'st lawrences' they all knew what you meant. There is a small church in Bromley road of the same name, built as a replacement. pictures are available on Flickr although I was unable to provide a link. Hpoe this helps.

He returned to London and we have lost contact. He will be in his early sixties and always loved a drink and game of darts. If anyone knows of him or his whereabouts I can be reached on Facebook or as bshort76 on Twitter.

I always wanted to end up buying one of those old victorian houses in Catford. I remember when i lived in Culverley Road house share for only £40 per week, about 15 years ago, good times. I would say i feel safe enough in Catford. One time when that girls body was found chopped up in the binbags near MIlford Towers; but that was a one off (i hope !)

OMG- that gang rape happened maybe 10-15 years ago!
Its not my favourite place, it has its issues but its outrageous to be dragging up horrible incidents from a decade and more ago to denigrate an area.
Standing outside McDonalds isnt exactly with your mates productive, but not its spoiling for a fight. If you're scared of young people, or more especially young boys- then try talking to some!
For goodness sake stop being so scared and start living.
The new flats under construction on Rushey Green in Catford next to Lewisham Job Centre are having shops or a shop underneath them. One rumour is that it is going to be a Tesco Express Store. Does anyone know if this is true. We could certainly do with it at this end of Catford since Sainsburys closed their Sainsburys Local Store at the Shell Petrol Garage.

There should be a limit put on certain types of shops ie betting shops/fast food chicken shops/pawn shops/pound shops/funeral shops etc -how about 2 of each max(in fact no 1 of each max would be better still)-I guess this has been thought of before, how about different rates for different types of shops,ie Pizza Express(not that they would want to invest in Catford as it is),Marks &Spencers/art shops etc wouldn't pay hardly anything but a pound shop/fast food shop etc pays the top band-Also the shops' signage should be attractive to look at. By the way does anyone know how many of the town planners live in Catford?
Yes it would be interesting to know how many of the town planners actually live in Catford-a 5 year old could plan it better

Exciting and fun daily walks for your dogs whilst you are at work/on holiday or whist your recovering from an illness. I am friendly, reliable and I adore dogs. I am a student part time
and I have a lot of free time and my passion is working with different types of dogs and my primary concern is making them happy. I do not drive so the dogs will be walked in the nearest local dog walking area but I promise it will be fun.
Flexible service to suit your requirements. References available. Reasonable rates.

I am moving to the Catford area in a few weeks. Was wondering are there any artists working in the area or studios spaces available.
Any noticed/been into the new restaurant that has opened up where Yamas used to be (next to Riva, by the old cinema).
Nice to see someone investing in the area, looks very nice inside (Lewisham council take note).
I was almost hoping it would be a decent bar (or bar/restaurant), but it's better than another pound shop, betting shop or another bad pub to add to the collection.
"This place is excellent for teaching more than just the physical aspects of martial arts. It teaches discipline, respect for self and others, compassion, integrity, perseverance, and self-confidence. The instructors are there for you with the primary goal of providing what you need to succeed. It is great for adults and even better for children, giving them tools for life that see them through the important aspects of interacting with others and striving to be the best of themselves. I love this place."
Went to Catford Secondary School 1951 to 56. Lived in Catford walked to school past the Town Hall, Timpsons, The Eros, Percy Freemans cycle shop, Deeprose? motorcycles. Cycled with the CTC who met outside The Eros on Sunday mornings. Had a Saturday job in Cheesemans in Lewisham. Looking back it was a great time.

I totally agree. There are enough gambling shops in Catford so we don't need anymore. The Council should be discouraging not promoting. Bring back the High Street shops and boutiques. Lovely outdoor seating areas with a central waterfall. I've lived in Catford for 15 years and hope to see big improvements for the future.
Hi, Does anyone know the phone number for the Secondhand White Goods Shop at Rushey Green Catford please?
I've passed it in a car & want to visit but would like to call them and ask about prices/availabilty/delivery etc. first.
As far as I know, it's the only one selling Washing Machines, Fridge-Freezers & Cookers etc?
I need to buy 1 of each of the above-mentioned (as mine are all worn out/broken)
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Hi could anyone recommend a good gardener that charges reasonable rates. to cut back bushes and weeding monthy small garden
Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
Catford does not need another betting shop. Catford could do with more general shops and supermarkets to turn Catford back in to a main shopping area once again.
We should all petition Lewisham Council, Local Councillors and local Lewisham/Catford MP's and demand they regenerate Catford properly and improve the area for all.
Hi! I agree with you!
