Moving to Brixton, advice on which areas please!

Hello, I haven't posted here before but I was hoping to get some local advice please. We're moving from Glasgow to London for work and our plan is to relocate to Brixton, as this is the area my partner has most enjoyed visiting over the years.

I've been trying to do a bit of internet research ahead of leaving and would be really grateful for any help and advice on what areas of Brixton SW2 or SW9 we should aim for (in terms of cost/transport convenience/safety) and any areas that are best avoided if possible. The intention is to get temporary accommodation for the first month while we try and find a 1-bedroom flat to rent. Thanks very much! :)

Met an Amazing Woman

For the first time in decades, I've met a Woman who immediately made my Heart Sing. She's a 40 year old mother of one- 3 years my junior, recently divorced and I'm posting this here for reasons that are beyond me.... Angela M. is both stunningly beautiful and "Sassy" making me feel alive and like a "teenager" inside. She's intelligent and appears almost "light on her feet".....

However, nothing will ever come of these feelings, which is why I'm posting them here, in the hope that she finds out and knows she's caught the attention of someone who until now has been as happy in his world as anyone could be....

Hello Brixton, does anybody remember or even know of Fred Barnes who lived there in the 1950's ish and probably lived on there much later. He had connections with The Commercial Road, and knew the old Contintal Cafe, believed him to have dealing's with Silver? Looking for Sidney Scott and Bridget (nee Walsh) Scott. Thank you Brixton.

Hi there

Just wondering if you have had any response to this? I am also looking for a writers group / critique class in the Brixton area but haven't come up with anything yet. If you're still looking, perhaps we can join up and do something together?

...

I am sorry to hear that. I personally don't walk through estates anywhere - even if its a short cut.

I understand your fear, but I moved to Brixton 3 years ago and have bean fine. Friends in Notting Hill have been robbed too, so I guess these things happen anywhere these days.

Sat Jun 16

YES

its fine. :)

Sat Jun 16

Irrelevant...

...I am not saying that Brixton is the safest, but nothing has ever happened to me or anyone I know here. I am only 5'3, female and do walk home in the evenings most weekdays.

There is loads to do in Brixton - far more entertaining than Dulwich and everything is usually within a walkable distance. I think it's a great place to live.

Anyone Remember

Should I move into Brixton with a newborn?

Hi,

We are a couple from Italy, I will be a student in Central Saint Martins. We have a newborn baby girl, a dog and a cat and we are looking for a 2 bedroom accesible apartment (did I mention I am in a wheelchair>) - I dont need it accesible 100% but you know...

Our Budget is 1250 pounds tops, so Brixton seemd appropiate budget wise, and there is the accessible undeground station. What do you think? Any advice? Thanks a Lot

I used to walk through that estate all the time

I'm a young female and a week ago I walked through and there was s bunch of kids between the ages of 9 and 16

I felt uneasy as soon as I saw them

One of then started following me and tried to mug me, I screamed and ran away

There were residents all around - all just looked on and did nothing

It was so scary and I now feel extremely uneasy as I live near by but most certainly will never walk through there again

The police were really great although we did not find the kid ( he was about 15 and so violent)

I have always stood up for Brixton - but it has let me down and I will be moving when my lease is up

The truth about Brixton

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are considering buying a flat on the Loughborough Estate in Brixton and I would like some up-to-date opinions on what Brixton is like as a place to live. I know the area reasonably well but obviously its very different to actually live there. It is very important to me to feel safe so any info on the prevalence of crime/violence would be appreciated. I love Brixton by day and can clearly see the community spirit and happy atmosphere but is it the same at night?

Tulse Hill Estate

Hey Tiz,

I have lived very near there for over 3 years, thinking it was fine, but tonight I was attacked randomly by a black stocky kid, who tried to take my bike from me. Somehow I got out of it with just a little blood shed to the knees, but the police were called...

If I were Yu, do not, but once in 3 years...

Nasty incident. i wiLL avoid going through there from now on...

This exhibition touches down on identity crises for Iranian women due to socio/economical and political/cultural pressures. Who are we? The rebellious inside has been suppressed. We are not what we wanted to be and we are not what they want us to be. All these suppressions and restriction have caused women to seek their identity in material comforts as well as being influenced by the global material loving preferences.

Yes

I'd listen to this person. Murders are rife in any area of Brixton with an estate. If you're not shocked by it and you can handle living in an area where everyone stands outside watching the paramedics cart away another body or sometimes having to slice him open in the middle of the street like in Loughborough, not saying a word to the police about someone who got shot, finding bullet shells and knives in your front garden and hearing girls screaming from out your window at night, go right ahead.

Thu Jun 24

Seriously.

Just don't go near Loughborough Junction, that's all. The only thing you're gonna get around the Valentia area nowadays are drug dealers constantly asking you to buy something and kids who think they're the dog's bits. But they're all little teenagers too busy shooting at each other to worry about you. Having said that, if a school bus full of kids can get caught in the cross-fire of two rival gangs on either side of the main high street, you're pretty much miffed whereever you are in Brixton.

Thu Jun 24

Yes.

I've lived there all my life and Loughborough is by far the worst area of Brixton; the junction included. The estates there are easily the crappest in Brixton, there are more shootings and stabbings here than any other area of London, in general; Minet Road and Loughborough in particular. It's right next to Angell Town as well which used to be terrible but has changed quite significantly now. Last year, around 4 people were murdered in the estate alone. Most of the crap that happens here isn't put in the papers or anything, so all these yuppies posting on this page don't know anything about actually "living" in Brixton because they'll never integrate into a community that is mixed-up with gang culture. All they know is the academy and where to get a wi-fi connection. As for the rent, it's too high for the crap you're living in. Put it this way: the bars on the estate's doors and windows are there for a reason. And the post about it being like East Dulwich/Clapham: WOW.

209a Coldharbour Lane

London SW9 8RU

Tel: 020 ****993

Private View: Fri 2nd of July 2010 – 6.00 pm to 11.00 pm

Exhibition runs from: Fri 2nd of July – Thursday 8th of July 2010

Sat: 12.30pm - 5.00 pm

Last day of Exhibition: Thurs 8th of July: 10.00 am to 5.00 pm

Ilse Mikula endeavours to explore what links us to a place and a sense of belonging. When we are in a place, it is determined by its physicality and spatial limitation, once we leave the location, all that links us to the space is a process of reminiscence and emotional reflections. Thus through absence the place becomes memory.

Last day of Exhibition: Thurs 11th of March: 11.00am to 5.00pm

‘Themes and Variations’ is a group exhibition of works by Errol Linton, Dom Hanley, Justin Hindley and Maggie Winnall. Errol Linton’s work transports the spectator immediately into a world of hustle and bustle filled with music, and voices, melting them into an explosion of colour, pattern and form. Bold in colour and brush stroke, Linton’s paintings at first remind the viewer of fauvism and surrealism yet they are very idiosyncratic in style and denote of the artist’s unique power of imagination and strength of expression.
