Welcome to London Brick Lane

linden buildings

Yes Linden Buildings were situated in the northern half of Brick Lane, i.e. that part of Brick lane that extends from Bethnal Green Road. You can find it on google earth. If you head along from its junction with BG road the fist junction that you approach is that with Rhoda Street and Shackerwell Road. At that junction on the corner of Brick lane and shackerweyl road is a tall wire fenced play area this is the previous site of Linden Buildings. They stretched from that corner of Brick Lane and Shackerwell Stret for the whole length on the south side of Shackerwell until it met up with Bethnal Green road once again. For half the length of the road (Shackerwell it was very narrow and still is. Spent a lot of time their in the '50 and 60's my brother lived in them for a while. You could get onto the roofs of Linden building which was great fun in the winter and bombard people with snow

Brick Lanre demolished

Hi Chris,

I think your dates are a bit out. The buildings were levelled somewhere around 1981. initially the site acted as a car park before being used for new flats.

Somewhere on the net there is a picture of the legendary harry fisherman standing at the entrance to his shop. It was taken around 1985 . If you look to the extreme left of the photo you will see white space/sky. That's where the buildings used to be.

Cheers.

Harrys and Leons

Probably know a lot of you who have posted these comments. No doubt we once played together. Spitting gob certainly brings back memories. Bet you don't remember black bob the dog who chased the cars. What about the wood yard by the back of Great Eastern buildings. How we used to raid Harry's and try to swipe a sweetie or two. Leon was too smart and kept an eye on everyone. What about Chutlers if thats the correct spelling on Brick Lane. Used to go and play table football there. That was all back the late sixties and early seventies.

Tue Aug 26

Wheeler House vs Great Eastern building.

Used to live in Wheeler House back in the sixties. Had some great times as kids with the mob from Great Eastern Buildings. Does any remember Trumans brewery and how we used to raid the back locking for crates of beer. Remember the creepy middle block on the left and roof and thought it to be haunted. Does any remember Gibbo who played the guitar on the ground floor. Must admit he was rather good.

Tue Aug 26

Great Eastern Buildings

Ed, do you remember the rat fishing by the bakery ?

What about black bob that used to chase the cars !

Great Eastern Buildings

I lived in the buildings from 1950 until 1956. Two rooms, gas lit, kitchen range, cold water and loo on landing shared with four families; Bawes, Knights (grandparents to the Mcgarry family who lived in the block across the courtyard).

Coal stored under the only cupboard in the main room. Bars on bedroom window as it backed onto the railway yard. Other families: Johnstone, Wiberham, Smith. Characters:Granny(who always apeard to be hanging out of her ground floor window watching everyone); Coaly, learning difficulties, always looked after by his sister.

Sun Apr 20

I lived there until 1965, have fond memories of Leons Shop, going to buy sweets by the quarter from the jars. not so fond memories of a man called spitting gob! He was Jewish but used to wear a clerics collar, if you called out to him in the street, Spitting Gob, he would chase you up Brick lane, poor man how we kids tormented him. Our house had an outside toilet, where the water would freeze in winter, we lived in the bottom of the house which had one bedroom 1 living room, and a small scullery. an old lady called called Chaela lived up stairs, she was `posh` as she used a cake stand at tea time. Sunday night would be bath time, a wash down in the tin bath in the front room in front of the fire.

Spent many a happy hour at Itchy Park, me and my friends would would walk past all the `tramps` to get to the swing park, often the tramps would be drunk and we would be standing there watching them while they had stand up fights!.

Sat Apr 19

Linden Buildings stood on the site currently occupied by the basketball court. I lived there with my parents and sister from 1948 until 1961 when we moved to Canada (Toronto). Small flats - 2 per floor.

linden buildings

i read with interest about the great eastern buildings and i wonder if anyone remembers linden buildings on brick lane? they have certainly been demolished but does anyone know where they used to stand? my father francis thorne, known as frank, was born there at no 6 in 1920 and brought up there til after ww2. his father was also called frank and his mother alice. his grandfather, william thorne was the superintendant of the linden buildings at that time. i grew up listening to stories of brick lane, spitalfields, the shopkeepers , the market traders and local characters. i dont live far from there and visit often but there is no evidence of linden buildings. would be interested to hear from anyone with any memories of them.

Tue May 07

These buildings were demolished years ago, due to development of the area. I remember playing in the flats as a child, friends of the family lived there with 5 children in a 2 roomed flat and had to share a toilet with other tenants

Tue Apr 30

Margie Vigus and Great Eastern Buildings

My mother's best friend was Margie Vigus. They both lived in the Great Eastern Buildings throughout their childhood and teenage years (1920s - 1930s). Mum's family left during the war to move up to the Midlands. Mum is still alive and is 91 this year (2013). I have a picture of my mum and Margie on the roof of Great Eastern Buildings with George who later became Margie's husband. I would very much like any information you have on Great Eastern Buildings.

Mon Mar 11

Hey great to read your story. Yes, spitting gob scared me like hell. I was 6 in 1965. Busy finding parts for a go cart, then racing round the flats. Do you know The Milkman- a guy who lived in Wheler House? He rode round on a bike all day with a briefcase attached. Like you i have loads more stories......... E.mail me -

I lived in Grey Eagle St off Brick Lane until I was ten years old in 1965, I remember a local eccentric called `spitting gob`, he was Jewish but wore a priests collar... if you walked past him and spat on the floor he would chase you up Brick Lane! needless to say I wouldn`t spit until I was at least 30 yards in front of him! Have lots more memories if you need them.

I lived in Great Eastern Buildings as a child in 1942. My mothers family the Vigus family all lived there my great grandparents grandparents and of course my parents. My grandparents were rehoused into a prefab in approximately 1946 and we moved to Bethnal Green to a new flat in 1948. My great grandparents still lived there. My gt grandfather died and my gt grandmother was still living there until she died in 1964. In 1981 it was my parents 40th anniversary and my brother made a video of their life in the East End and went to the buildings but unfortunately they had been demolished. Although I was very young I can still remember the exact layout of the flats and if you are interested I can share this with you. I also have a great aunt still alive who was a Vigus and I am sure she would know more about the time she lived there.

Life Drawing in Brick Lane

In The Middle of Brick Lane, opposite Vibe Bar, at 93 feet east there is a place where you can Draw, Draw and draw for about £5 a head for 3 hours. As long as I bring a few friends sometime and nothing else because we share the cost. Yesterday tuesday the model was a formidable Italian curvy and flexible model, the music was so relaxing, tony was so attentive and helpful, people so friendly, poses amazing and beer on the tap, I simply wonder if It wasn't a dream. Today I went to meetup.com/lifedrawingsociety and it wasn't they do it everywhere in London in absolutely perfect locations.

I had to let you know, let's bring our pencils and change the world to a better one.

Yep, like I said, pretentious.

"Oh, wow, look at me - I'm really roughing it on daddy's trust fund."

Sat Mar 01

Poser, maybe. Snob, no.

Fri Feb 29

Rubbish

I can't believe what a shabby yet pretentious area this is. Why would anyone want to live here - unless they're a complete poser, of course.

Fri Feb 29

No. You're under age.

Sun Feb 24

Dont join the club (geddit)

Well, for starters, if you're under 18 then it's illegal to go to a club. But beyond that, if you like overpriced, packed and unfriendly bars full of pretentious, fashion victim Student Grants, Sharons too drunk to stand or Mockney Geezers looking for a fight, then Brick Lane is for you. Or perhaps you prefer fake East End pubs full of arty bores and Trustafarians who fool themselves that they're 'roughing it' and have lived in the area 'before it was fashionable' (i.e. before 2003)? Brick Lane has this too. But forget the pubs - look outside. Enjoy the beer p*ss and vomit soaked walls and pavements, the jungle of empty fried chicken boxes, the insults shouted by strangers and the hassle of curry house touts. And if you're really lucky, you'll get mugged! Enjoy!

Sun Feb 17

I disagree

I disagree, Brick Lane is RIFE with drug addicts, muggers (more so pick-pockets), pimps and prostitutes. Not to mention the countless drug dealers hanging around the area.

Cheap furniture

There's a couple of places on Scatler Street, just near the Bagel shop, and there's places near Bethnal Green Tube. A very funky place doing cheap retro items has just opened up on Redchurch Street next to the Redchurch Bar. The around Cheshire Street on Sunday has a lot going v. cheaply...

Mon Apr 30

Youll love it!

Little restaurants (mainly indians), cafés, bars/clubs (good ones!), market (you'll find anything on sunday mornings), designer shops, Victoria Park (about 15m walk)...

And you're not far from Columbia Rd, Hackney (I think you'd like the "Hackney City Farm" concept) and Shoreditch (with the famous Hoxton Square)...

The whole thing is trendy and lively. To conclude, if you can live there, go for it!
