My Grt. Grandfather Joseph Arno lived and died at no. 59. I think that was opposite the Wellington. He is on the 1911 Census as was his son Albert Arno who was killed in France WW1. 1917. Albert Arno is not on the memorial, I think because when he married in 1915 he and his bride to be were living in Danes Place, Bow. As I was born in 1943, and my Grt. Grandfather died in 1947, I always wondered if I had gone to Cyprus Street to meet him.
It's pretty similar to the areas you lived in previously. There's a big Tesco and Sainsburys not too far from your place.
I have been living in this area for over 12 years and loving it. Have you been to the Victoria Park?
Hello, my name is Jon Arno from the US. I am researching my family in Bethnal. My 2nd Great Grandfather ( Joseph Arno 1848-1904 married twice but his first wife was Jane Elizabeth Hardington 1851-1904. Both lived and died in Bethnal. Would very much appreciate any help in locating relatives and information on my family. Kindest regards Jon Arno

I knew Maureen, I worked for her for a couple of years. Sad to here she has died.she was one of a kind
I recently moved (yesterday) to a flat in the council housing just south of Bethnal Green Tube and east of Cambridge Heath Road. I first visited the flat at night so I knew what I was getting into.
First question: As a 27 yo woman should I be concerned with walking home at night from the tube or night buses? I'm an American student who has been in London for 7 months mainly around the Manor House, Highbury, Finsbury Park Areas (I've moved a lot) and I have never felt unsafe walking home at, say 3AM.
Second, is there a good place to buy local, well priced fruit and vegetables in the Bethnal Green area, either from a store or market?
And lastly, this is just out of pure curiosity, why does it seem like there are no Americans in London? Have yet to meet one outside of school but everyone tells me we are everywhere! Maybe it's because I never go to west London? Who knows...
Thanks for the help!
Dunbridge Street - is it safe?
I have an offer for a flat that is being finalized and it is on Dunbridge Street, where Cheshire Street, ends. Can you please tell me if this is a safe area? Would it be okay for a woman to walk around by herself at night (10 pm- midnight)? I would likely be walking from the Bethnal Green tube stop or the closest 8 bus stop of Bethnal Green Road.
I saw your post about Cyprus Street on the London Bethnal Green website (below). I am a freelance film maker and I am planning to make a film about the war memorial in the street. I too am intrigued by Cyprus Street and have been ever since I came across it while working as a cub reporter for the Hackney Gazette over 30 years ago. I subsequently moved into TV. I would be most grateful for any information you could give me about the history of the street, in particular stories from relatives of the people commemorated on the memorial. I want to find out as much about the fallen soldiers and sailors as I can. I'm hoping to make the film to mark the centenary of the outbreak of The Great War on July 28th next year. I can be reached on **** ****3.
I am researching the stories behind the Cyprus Street war memorial for a history film project. I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who knows about the history of the street, particularly relatives of the people named on the memorial. I am trying to find out as much as possible about the people who died and the effect on their families. Best Wishes. Terry Messenger

Does anyone know why Temple Street in Bethnal Green is so named?
Interesting place ...
My name is Iain Bennett and live in Cumbernauld north of Glasgow. I believe that my great, grandfather may have been William Taylor Bennett. My father was Albert Bennett, who's father was also Albert Bennett. According to my grandfathers marriage certificate in 1906 Glasgow, his father was John Bennett, a gold beater, and his wife was Annie (ms Hook). I would be grateful if someone could contact me to clarify.
Myself and another female friend are looking to move to Bethnal Green. I can see there are mixed reviews. We are two female young professionals and so would really appreciate any recommendations on nicer areas to live with similar people.
The Housing Association is Southern Housing and the Duke of Wellington pub is now private flats. The whole street is now listed as is the pub sign.
The housing association is Southern Housing of which I am tenant. My house used to be I am told a shop which explains my strange double street door and unbearably narrow hallway. I havfe lived in this area all of my life and have elderly family who were born in the houses in Cyprus Street. Its just a shame they built any flats near this now listed street to spoil it. The Duke Of Wellington pub is now private flats.
Hi Alex, Did you ever get this book club up and running?
I am keen to find out who it is that still holds Maureen in their thoughts....if you're still interested, pls reply to this post or e-mail me on
Hi Claire:I'm also trying to check that I have the correct GtGr'father John Ellis. The Cert I have shows he was born 24.10.1857at 22 Wellington Street to who I think are my GtGtG'father Charles ELLIS & wife Elizabeth. Cant find anything on the 1861 Census.
Might you be able to help? Thank you
don't know if you have moved to russia lane.
just for re-assurance, i was born and brought up just round the corner from russia lane, went to the primary school across the road from there.
one of my closest friends lives in russia lane and i visit 2-3 times a week.
the area is nice, very good for public transport & its safe, trust me. i'v been there/go there all times of the day and evening but no trouble.
you do see the usual groups of youth that look trouble but they are no harm & yes i agree with the other reply that victoria park is lovely, you won't be far from it only a minutes walk from the gates.
hope that helps.
Are you still looking, as I have a room in a great house available around Feb/March 2013.
Thanks so much!
Always best to practice safety anywhere. I havent experienced any negative incidents when i was living there.
Bethnal Green is one of the nice parts of the borough. Especially Victoria Park area.
Hope that helps.
Myself (23 year old female) and two friends (both female and around the sameage) are thinking about moving to Bethnal Green. I was wondering...doesayone know much about the safety near Russia Lane?
Hi, I noticed a comment about a £**** refurbishment bill for Mulberry House (Victoria Park Square E2) for all leaseholders. We've just had an offer accepted on a flat there (July 2012) and I'm obviously a little concerned... As there are no dates on these postings I was wondering whether this is still outastanding?
If anyone could let me know it would be much appreciated...
No.65, My Nan lived here on the first floor, two rooms and a kitchen, The Trehearn family lived in the top two rooms and my Mum and Dad lived in the basement two rooms. The Trehearns moved away, my Nan went to Canada and My family occupied the whole house up until we were moved out to Pepy's House, Hartley Street when they pulled the old houses down. Would love to find anyone who remembers the Pyne family....John and Liz Pyne, sons Jack, Leslie, Albert and Reggie and Betty Pyne.

I worked for Maureen Feldman, in the 1990's
I became very close to her but unfortunetly we had a bit of a fall out. I have been trying to find her over the past few years. so sad to hear shes not around anyone she really was a legend!
I just wondered how you got on with your research into the Lamb family.
My grandmother was a Lamb who lived in Bethnal Green and I believe her father may have been a Cabinet Maker.
I am looking for photographs of my grandmother Annetta Kelly born 1901 a pupil at St Peters school A school photograph was taken of her at school sadly mislaid so any photos I would gladly pay for.
I used the Duke of Wellington from 1982 onwards when I was working at the London Chest Hospital. In 1982 it was run by Bert and Anne Kelly but in 1985 it was taken over by John and Linda Gardner, who became friends to me and my colleagues and the hospital. Of course, the pub is now closed, as are many of the various pubs that used to be open in a relatively small area of Bethnal Green. Does anyone have any idea where John and Linda have moved to?
Hello. I've just stumbled upon this site - I'm amazed! My nan was born in this house in 1882 - she was Annie Louisa and her parents were Frederick William and Catherine (formerly Lye). Freddie was a Brewers Servant (yes that's what is says on her birth cert!) I know it was a long time ago but would be interested to know who lives there now?
Thanks for posting - so important to remember the past, isn't it?
there's an excellent pub quiz at the star of bethnal green tuesdays from 8.30
When I was vicar of st peters there was a church magazine in the church records which included the party in grounds of st peters school. with ladies in big hats I remember. It might still be there. Enquire at the Vicarage.

Hi i'm a girl and I'm looking for some more female friends in my area for going out to Brick Lane, etc.. :) If you live near Brick Lane write me soon and we can meet up this weekend! :) Please note I'm looking for female friends ONLY, thanks :)
Did anybody know Maureen Feldman. She was brought up in and around Stepney Green before moving to Harold Hill circa 1951. She went on to run pubs such as The Merry Fiddler's in Dagenham (early 60's) right up to 2009 with The Flying Scotsman, Caledonian Road. Sadly she died New Years Eve 2009. If anybody has any recollections of her I would love to hear from you. I can be contacted on
My Great Grandfather Joseph Arno lived at No.59 from at least 1921 untill he died in 1947. The house was still there last time I looked. There are a lot of French Surnames on the memorial, these were descendents of the Huguenot weavers who settled in Spitalfields and Bethnal Green about 1700, as were my ancestors, our name was originally spelt Arnau but it was changed to Arno.
Hello, I am in the process of buying a house in Evesham House on Old Ford Road and was just wondering if anyone knows if there is any planned maintenance work for this building. I have just read the post about Mulberry House and it scared me a bit. Thanks.
I'm a classically trained singer looking for a small rehearsal room to practice singing on a regular basis. A soundproof room in East/Central/North London would be ideal.
It would only be me using the space.
I would be practicing Mon, Tues, Wed and Friday evenings 7-9pm and on Saturday and Sunday 2-4pm. These times are flexible depending on the owners needs.
I am able to pay £100 per month and am responsible and respectful of any hired space. I welcome anyone who has a spare room to drop me a line!
I haven't had a chance to visit yet, but it certainly looks like it's still there on Google Street View. My great great grandfather, Harry (Thomas) Ricketts gave it as the address of his next of kin when he joined the Army in 1867, describing the area as 'Victoria Park'! I'd be very interested to hear if anyone knows of Ricketts, Featherstone or Shackleton families from the second half of the 1800s.
I lived on Ellsworth Street for 6 months. Bit of a mixed bag really. There are a lot of youths about, making noise and being annoying. But on the other side I never had anyone threaten me with violence. Had a few instances where people sussed me out, but in the end they were just kids. I was happy to live close to the high street though. I never really wanted to walk the other way. Over all I would say its dodgy, but there is more bark then bite on these streets.
Please could you email me the person who posted a post on this site with regards to his grandfather living at 88 Cyprus street in 1916.I would be most interested to know his name as my relatives also lived at the address some years later.
I am open minded South Asian woman, working in East London as a human rights activist. I am in my early 30s, lived in shared accommodation all my adult life in India, NYC, London and love it! Am sociable, clean + tidy, considerate and respect privacy. I am out and about a lot but look forward to coming back to a lovely home full of creative and positive energy. I dig stimulating conversations and meaningless chatters love the arts, films, music, diverse cultures, cuisine, good people and I have a growing collection of DVDs, CDs and books!

My great grandparents William Taylor Bennett and Annie Jane Hook lived at 42 Wellington Street when they married in 1875. He was a Gold Beater. Do I understand correctly that Wellington Street is now Cyprus Street?
I have found these post for Cyprus street by chance when looking for info while researching my family tree. I was interested in the post about 88 Cyprus street and wondered who their grandfather was who lived there. The reason is that I have the Neale family living there in the 1920s (Arthur Neale). Also please could someone tell me if there were anymore pubs on this street in 1921. I have Emily Pickin beer retailer at 32 Cyprus street in 1921 .LastleY anyone remember Bill Harris and wife Emily?? and daughter Ann(b 1942). Bill's sister also lived in this street.
Any of this ring a bell with anyone?

I have a 1906 Baedeker for London which shows Cyprus Street as whole, and not divided into its two constituents, Edwardian to the west, built around 1906, and Victorian to the East, built in 1880, all with boot-scrapers by the door. I believe the Edwardian end was originally police houses. The Victorian end was where street parties were held, because it is so easy to close it off to traffic. but I believe that practice has now stopped with the change in the neighbourhood.
Helo I am still searching for this family. I know that Sarah had a younger brother Peter Nevin who visited them from canada in 1952. I am particulary interested in any parker family that had a son John Parker who was in the scots guards. I believe his father was William Parker and he may have had a brother James.
I know it 50 years ago but you never know.... Thanks Shelagh
Hi Im reposting after 4 years to see if anyone has any info on the Parker family Sarah nee nevin, John and their daughter Ellen may Born in 1914. Stainsbury street and the Lennin estate are inportant in the family background
I was brought up there in the 1930's and it was rough even then, also in the 1960's, so what's new?
I went to St.Peters School from 1932 till 1939, and lived in Nelson Gardens, I've a school photo of 1939 leavers and I've still a good memory of those years.
I lived in Nelson Street from 1928 till 1939 and attended St.Peters School from 1932 till Aprill 1939.
I do have a class photo of that date with Mr.Orchard our teacher and F.M.Thomas the head.

I saw an earlier posting for a book club, I am looking to set one up would anyone out there be interested, meeting once a month in a pub, cafe or at my flat. if the other one took off then please get in touch with me on
It is indeed. My flatmate very often come back from a night out on her own. Having said that, everyone should practice safety precautions i.e. crossing the road to avoid suspicious characters.
It is perfectly safe area. I am guessing it is the newly built building opposite the park which is very close to Bethnal Green tube. If you are lucky you may have a great view from your room!
Hi, I'm staying at this hotel with my young son - is it safe for the two of us to walk from the tube to the hotel after dark - maybe 9:30 to 10pm? It's very dark in winter by then...

Looking at a property in Mulberry house . Is your post Oct 2008. Has this happened yet?
Estate agents seem to know nothing about it. Did it appear in the local search.
In this climate £**** per flat is a huge sum to expect people to pay on top of a mortgage. Surely this is why we pay a service charge!
Would be happy if anyone had any recent info on this project . Thank you.
