London Lite piece on living in barbican - interviewees required!

Hello - I'm a freelance journalist and I'm writing a property piece for London Lite about what it is like to live in Barbican, and I'm looking for some interviewees for my piece. If you're under 40, and own your own property in Barbican and are happy to be photographed, I'd be really grateful if you could get in touch. The questions won't be intrusive, I just want to hear what makes the Barbican a good place to live in London. My email address is

Life Drawing in Barbican

100 yards from Barbican station there is a place where you can Draw, Draw and draw for about £5 a head for 3 hours. As long as I bring a few friends sometime and nothing else because we share the cost. Yesterday the model was a formidable French and flexible model, the music was so relaxing, tony was so attentive and helpful, people so friendly, poses amazing and beer on the tap, I simply wonder if It wasn't a dream. Today I went to meetup.com/lifedrawingsociety and it wasn't they do it everywhere in London in absolutely perfect locations.

I had to let you know, let's bring our pencils and change the world to a better one.

We are shooting a short film in 7th, 8th and 9th of November 2008. We need an open plan flat space to shoot it. It can be a loft, a warehouse or a spacious flat. It doesn’t need more than one bedroom, but the open space should be spacious. We would need unrestricted access during these three days.

We can only offer £100 for the whole period and a copy of the film once is completed. Would suit anyone wanting to hire the flat for productions as a showcase or anyone wanting to shadow a short film production.

Please get in touch by email and email your address and pictures of the flat in the first instance to

Hi all, I'm an Architecture student, currently doing a project which is based on a community space at the Barbican. Is there anything that might be missing in your area? I know that there is a lot of going on already, but from a resident's point of view, maybe there is just this one facility, function space missing? Please share your views.

Many thanks for all your help.

We are a film society in search of a hall for hire. Our evenings are not open to the public, they are members only. We screen documentaries. We are a friendly, civilised gathering. We seek somewhere cheap as we do not have much cash. Our previous space is being turned into a restaurant.

We like to use old spaces akin to school assembly halls, boy scout huts or church halls.

We need a simple space for an occasional Saturday night within travel zones 1 & 2, fairly near a tube station.

We do not want a fancy interior, all we need is:

a bare room with clear walls (no fixed pictures etc)

40 chairs

4 tables

electricity power points

preferably an un-carpeted floor

water supply to fill our tea urn

Any suggestions most welcome.

Dumb question about packed trains

Fri Nov 11

places to eat in barbican or nearby

Hey Try Thai Square the food is amazing there. Thats in Angel Islington though, not far from the station. Otherwise you have places like pizza express, when you come out of barbican station turn left. In farringdon tehers a place called tinsel town, theyre open 24/7 and they do amazing milkshakes. the orio cookie or twix are the best.

Fri Nov 11

looking to rent a flat- REPLY

It really does depend on how much you are willing to spend on rent. There are some nice flats on Lever street, they are I think £115-130p/w per person. If you are willing to spend more then there are some nice flats near old street. They are called Gunnersbury Studios. The rent there for a two bedroom flat plus lounge/kitchen is £390p/w. If you are looking to pay less then you may have to look at places on an ex/concil estsate. Barnabas House has flats which are 3 bedroom flats plus lounge and seperate kitchen for £320p/w

Very informal meetings and each week each individual gets a chance to talk on their business and pass referals etc.. email me back if u may be interested and will explain in more detail

Fri Nov 26

did u ever find out anywhere that does thraeding as am interested in having it done, near where I work, in the barbican. can u let me know and how much it was?

Fri Nov 26

A good place to eat near the Barbican?

Ideally with a good Veggie menu....good value for money and cheerful would be great, please help???

Mon Nov 08

It is just something that relies on people randomly turning up at the first supermarket which people have posted (in this case i think it is Safeways) and wearing pink hearts. It is not actually organised

Thu Oct 14

Pizza Express in the bottom of that pinkish building, is connected by one of the high walks (near the escalator up from Morgate station) is not particualrly inspiring, but it is a safe back up if you cannot find anything else.

Thu Oct 14

Tower Block Service Charges

What are the service charges like in the tower blocks in the Barbican (Shakspere, Cromwell and Lauredale?) per year, and how often does the dreaded lift refurbishement come around, and how much typically does it cost each resident? It is funny, the issue of the service charges is not something the estate agents like to go into in great detail...

Thu Oct 14

Does anyone know where I can get threading (not waxing!) done at a decent price?

Wed Sep 08

French conversation

Does anyone know of a French conversation group in the Barbican/Old Street/City areas? I used to be fluent but am getting rusty through lack of practice... Contact me on

Fri Aug 27

Private Gyms

Place is surrounded by them - two Holmes Places, Lambs Club, Fitness First, LA Fitness - all have places within short walk (One of the Holmes Places is actually in the Barbican complex). Also at much lower cost the YMCA has a gym adjacent to the Barbican Complex (right next door to Holmes Place)

Wed Aug 18

Eating places

Loads within a short range and in the Barbican complex. Would recommend Cafe du Marche (Charterhouse Square), St John - St John Street, Bleeding Heart - a little further (maybe 10 mins walk), Alba in Whitecross Street (regional Italian - not your normal Italian restaurant fare). Club Gascon in West Smithfield has Michelin rosette. Any number of others.

Wed Aug 18

Living in the Barbican

Great place to live. No.1 - Safety. Crime is almost unknown and its safe to walk around even late night. Concert Hall, Thetre, Cinemas and one of the best public libraries in London on your doorstep. Freeholder is the City Corporation so you know you're not going to get totally ripped off by a fly-by-night freeholder. Service charges may seem highish, but you get a lot for them - underfloor heating, daily rubbish collection, beautifully kept gardens, a lake etc. etc. True the buildings may look ugly, but the location is great. Quiet at weekends - but thats a bonus and if you like nightlife all the Clerkenwell bars, restaurants and clubs are within staggering distance, but don't impinge on the residential qualities. Wouldn't live anywhere else in london. -

Wed Aug 18

public squash courts

Thu Aug 05

Brilliant Barbican dentist needed

Does anyone know about one? I'm' getting desperate, I'll pay private prices if one gets a recommendation. I've chipped my front teeth after being knocked off my bike.

Sat Jul 31

Barbican Paradise

The Barbican contains 2 very large private gardens with children's playgrounds. One huge lake full of carp, One large conservatory full of cacti and plants, concert hall, cinemas and theatres all in one place. There is a swimming pool and two health clubs as well as doctors, dentist and a (city) police station all within the self contained Barbican Estate. The Architecture is now grade II listed and considered an excellent example of 1970s design (now fashionable). The towers have the highest residential views in Europe.

Wed Jul 14

Maybe YOU should move - back to a gated community in the home counties inhabited by other Dail Mail readers... Barbican is one of the safest and nicest places in central London, but being in central London people from all social / economic groups live in the area. I like the fact that it's quiet at the weekends, and to be honest I really like the concrete too.

Wed May 26

Tinseltown on St. John St is open 24 hours. It has no license so no alcohol but they do amazing milk shakes using chocolate bars!!!

Mon Apr 26

I only ever use ADDISON LEE which covers all of London. 0207 387 8888. They are a bit pricier than most but very reliable.

Mon Apr 26

I moved to the Barbican 6 months ago and it's the best move I ever made! OK - at the weekends it's pretty dead but there are at least 3 tube stations within 5 mins walk and you can get wherever you want, West End, Oxford St.... It's a safe place to live and for me only 2 mins from work which takes so much stress out of my day!

Mon Apr 26

I find that 'Fresh' above ground at Moorgate Station is good. There is also a 'Jeeves of Belgravia' along Moorgate just past 'Next'.

Mon Apr 26

Holmes Place is on your doorstep.

Holmes Place, near Barbican Station is costly but good.
