Kennington HURLEY ROAD KENNINGTON LANEI was born at 15 Hurley Rd Kenninton Lane in 1949 - my name was Margo Hathaway and I enjoy reading about all the names of the old streets around Kennington. Some of the names from Hurley Rd were the Heddermans, Mangans, St Johns, Kettles, May, Rumbles, like everyone else I was sent to Bob White's for the shell fish - I didn't go to the school around the corner I went to Crampton Primary just off the Butts - when I go back for a look around at all the new buildings I can't really say they are much of an improvement - all the streets seem souless - the houses I knew as a kid seemed to have much more about them than the faceless ones I saw. We had shops on the corners - Barrs, Farrars, Queenies and the pub the East Arms on another corner - it wasn't luxury but I have some good memories of the place before I moved to Peckham in 1963 - now live in the West Country but would love to hear from anyone that remembers me and my brother Rick Post reply -->London Kennington mawalsh@tiscali.co.uk 26 Oct ^ KenningtonG/day my grandmother and family lived at 9 hurley rd kenington in the thirties and forties she was killed in the blits in 1941 ther name was fisher her name was emily my fathers name was walter and he worked with his brother patsey in ebeneser row which was the next street, a daughter polly worked at the hospital for many years after the war, hoping for any info ?/ Post reply -->London Kennington ron 11 Apr ^ KenningtonMargo I used to live in 27 Gilbert Road My cousins the Rudds lived at 18 Gilbert Rd. When they pulled these houses down my Nan was moved to Hurley Rd. Post reply -->London Kennington Chris 30 Nov ^ Kennington Hurley RoadI lived in Hurley Road (I think it was 53) between 1958 and 1965. I do remember Barrs and Queenies and the East Arms - didn't they used to sing 'Now is the hour' at closing time? Do you remember the Sheehans? young Mick Sheehan was a particular friend. And 'Mrs 85' who used to say to everyone 'I'm 85 you know'. She used to go to the East Arms for her lunchtime bottle of Guinness. Mail-me Post reply -->London Kennington H 3 Feb ^ KenningtonHello to the person who wants to know about the Fishers in Hurley Rd - I remember Mrs Fisher and her husband who lived in the first cottage on the left hand side coming up from Kenning Lane There were only two cottages in the whole street, the rest were houses- I lived at number 15 Hurley Rd about four doors up. She used to stand at her gate and wait to catch one of the kids eyes and ask us to run up the shop for her. Really nice lady - not very tall with a bun at the back of her head and always had a pinny on. I also remember Ebenezer Row - it was the back entrance to a lot of houses and also had a factory and loads of smaller workshops - we kids used to stand outside the foundry and watch the workman . Post reply -->London Kennington Pat McGuigan 5 Apr ^ Kennington Archbishop Sumners school in Reedworth StreetHi, Yes, I went to Archbishop Sumner's school in Reedworth Street too, but we mostly called it "St. Phillips" then, after the church next to it. I must have been there from about 1957 until about 1963. I remember an iron external staircase leading up to the upper classrooms, I remember a Mr. Crandon, teacher. I also remember a little rhyme we used to chant about him ... "Two, four, six, eight Who do we really hate - BEADY EYES CRANDON!" Poor bloke, can't remember anything particularly bad about him, but it was fun to join in anyway! I'm at Mail-me and my name's Charlie. I was tall for my age, and I think I was regarded as the class clown ... Oh, and I also remember Carol Humphries ... 'sigh' ... Mr Mollan was a great teacher, and a talented writer. He did a version of The Merchant of Venice and I was Portia in it. I remember that sweet shop, getting 2 ounces of spearmint pips! My older cousin lived across the road and had a dog called Omo, who was very popular with the kids. Happy days! I think Miss Edwards was the head teacher by the time I left. The other teachers I recall were Mr Kennedy, Mr Howls, & a music teacher, Miss Labette, who used to vist the school to teach singing. The only fellow pupils I can recall from my time were Carol Miller who lived in the new flats off Lambeth Walk, Gina Bertorelli, who's parents ran the Olympia Dining Room cafe in Kennington Road, Beryl Starmer, who emigrated with her family to Australia in 1959, Pamela Keen, David Robins, & David Robinson. Can anyone advise whether there is easy parking near the library, or would I be better travelling by tube. Also, does anyone remember Jimmy O'Shea (my uncle) who lived in Tracey Street? He wanted to keep memories of old lambeth alive and in his memory I have set up a blogsite at jimmyslambeth.blogspot.com. If anyone has any interesting stories or memories to share, I would be really grateful. You can email me on Mail-me Post reply -->London Kennington Janice Yoxall (formerly Crow) 8 Sep KenningtonKennington Kitty GloverDid anyone know my aunt who lived in Penton Place for a long time then moved not far away. She was attacked by two brothers in or around '95. Im trying to get information but the police are reluctant to tell me about it. I know it was ten years ago but i found out years later. Her sisters wanted it kept secret for some reason and i can respect that, but i would like to hear from anyone who knows anything about it please. She lived with Bert who died not long before and they used to work at the Criterion in London. Mail-me Post reply -->London Kennington Samantha Jones 31 Jul |
