Yes the hall in Abbey Grove hosted dances in the 50's. A dancing school from Woolwich re-located there and run dances for their pupils and others on a Saturday evening. Some of the names of people attending were Brian & Maureen Southgate, Janet Broughton, Malcolm Garratt, Roger, Gordon and Beryl Jewiss.

Abbey Wood Exchange Desperately Wanted

We have a 3 bedroom house in Panfield Road and are desperately seeking a 4 bed house on this side of the estate. We would also consider another 3 bed as long as its got lots of room.

Neighbours are great, close to schools, shops etc but sadly we need more space.

We are offering a very handsome reward for the right exchange.

I hope someone can help.

Abbey Wood Leaving Abbey Wood

Well, Just a quick update to you all.

We are no longer moving to the Abbey, as we went to view the house for a second time. My brother in-law (whom is English), wouldn't leave my wife there alone in the street as he felt the area is a bit "dodgy".

So we withdrew our offer and instead are moving to a lovely area in Bromley.

The house is MUCH smaller, but the shopping facilites and safety aspect are fantastic!

So to you all in Abbey Wood, lots of blessings to you - and the good people of Bromley, see you soon.

Abbey Wood Abbey Wood marshes

During the early 1960s I was working as apprentice electrician - which I was absolutely useless - on a sub-station at the junction of Eynsham Drive and Harrow Manorway before the Thamesmead estate was built. In those days the site of Thamesmead was bleak marshland where horses used to graze on the firmer ground. On one occasion a horse lost his footing and partly slipped into the water. The poor horse started 'screaming'. Being naive and unaware of reality, one of my work collegues said that the horse was being eating by the eels who lived in the marsh water. But I thought the horse was having a panic attack because (s)he was struggling to escape from the water. Are there any experts or veterans who have seen the same thing; and what conclusions do they draw from the horse's 'screaming'?

I've been living here for 2 years now, and I love it: it's very quiet both day and night and I have always felt perfectly safe . The house prices seem to be rising too, not that I care, I have no plans to sell!

Cross rail is going there. I have lived in Abbey Wood for 10 years, and I would say it was as safe as anywhere else in London.

Abbey Wood Was there ever a camera club in or near Abbey Wood?

My uncle Pat used to take photos of his family and was pretty good. When he died unfortunately his wife gave his photos away, she told my cousin, to a local photography club. He also had cine camera footage of my cousin's wedding and she has never seen it.
I am trying to see if it is possible to track down the club and the photos. This was possibly 15 or more years ago. My email is  Mail-me  if anyone has any ideas. Thank you.

I am trying to research the building of the CO-OP estate in Abbey Wood and would like to hear from anyone who has old maps or pictures around the turn of the centry.I am especially interested in how the estate progressed and what order the houses were built in.
Cheers

We also live on the co-op estate and went along to the Greenwich Local History Centre to find out about it. The Centre is part of the Woolwich Arsenal redevelopment and is also open on Saturdays. We found out loads of interesting things about how the estate was built, old maps, photos of the houses being built and more information about the chalk mines under the campsite (the chalk was mined to build the roads).

Really recommend a visit.

Abbey Wood a bit of history on old co-op house

the building which is now bexley cottage hospice was a big old house looked like a mansion in the woods and was named sharnels or charnelles house,my father worked there when we first moved to abbeywood securing the grounds as he was a secrity gaurd for mint secrity of croydon,my father had a breakdown the night of patrolling as many strange things were going on around him but there was no one visible to eye, aftar research was done at woolwich refrence libary checking old news papars and such the house had been used for many things,it was said to be a war hospital and a childrens nursery and that there were underground tunnels that lead out into the woods it was also used for other things but i dont quite remember, then a big fire broke out and the house didnt even look all that damaged,it had been dererclict for years then got pulled down for the hospice

The big old house was called "Shornells" my children used to play in it when they were small over 35 years ago now. They used to say they heard lots of noises and that it was haunted, but being kids no one took any notice of them.

The large house known as Shornells was built by the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society I think to commemorate a Jubilee. It was originally a hotel/guest house but was then used by the RACS as a staff training centre. My Email is

This was one mighty scary house even for a 26 year old former Royal Marine. Had a few very scary moments in the house over a period of time.
