brixton Effra on Kellett Road

Hi

Has anyone been there recently. I hear it has great live jazz nights on Sundays but this from someone who hasnt been there for ages. Is that still the case and what is it like in general? What about other week nights/weekends? Live music every night? Other than jazz?

I would also like to know the best chill-out weekend bar/club in Brixton which is open reasonably late but does not blow your ears out or is overly crowded. Friendly athmosphere, good music to move to and maybe a few coctails? I'm bored of Clapham and need change of scenery.

Thanks for any guidance.

brixton

Effra?.....They still do their Jazz thing down there on a Sunday, I was down there a few months ago and had a great time. Still a really mixed crowd, great little vibe if you ask me.

They also do Jazz in the week too...not sure exactly what days exclusively.

The White Horse on Brixton Hill also does a live thing on Sunday nights, quite a varied sound really...sometimes Acoustic...sometimes Jazz...sometimes a bit of everything.

Although not a Live music venue...the Mango Landing is rapidly turning into my fave Brixton boozer...it's relaxed, has an excellent selection of drinks and has a good mix of people. It's on Brixton Water Lane in between Brixton Hill and Effra Road. Well worth a visit.

Can't really think of any chilled bars in Brixton....maybe the Lounge on Atlantic Road but that closes at 12 I think. All the other bars in Brixton are banging IMHO.

brixton Live music

The Effra's still good, I live on Kellett Road, so I'm always popping in for some jazz and a pint of Guiness. Good local crowd, no Clapham tossers. I'd also try the Windmill, which has live bands on every night of the week. A bit divey, but when I went I loved it. Not sure about late night chill out bars, tho, hopefully someone else cn recommend somewhere.

brixton Jazz jamming old style in the Grosvenor

Its a bit obscure, but every Tuesday in The Grosvenor some old cronies get together for some improv: piano, trumpet, double Bass, singers etc... real proper stuff. Its tucked away along Robsart road between JAMM and Stockwell. Another nice surprise.

brixton Brixton market

Hi, I would like to know the following details about Brixton Market.

1. What time it opens on a Saturday
2. What it sells
3. How safe Brixton/Brixton Market is in the morning

Thank you

Post reply -->London brixton 26 Oct

brixton Brixton Market

Brixton market opens around 8 am on Saturdays and sells a range of things. All kinds of fruit and veg, watches, obscurd meat, electrical items, clothes, wigs, hats. It really has a lot to choose from.

As for safety in the morning, its fine. The market is very busy and there are loads of people about. To be honest Brixton town centre is fine in the right parts of the day. In fact, especially the market area, is very friendly and the people and shop owners are very polite.

brixton

Well it's always open when I walk by so I suppose it gets going around 9 or 10 am. There are so many stalls I couldn't really list them all but lots of food, fish, veg, wigs, candles, etc. It's a big bustling neighbourhood market. Something for everyone. Be sure to explore all the covered market areas too – these indoor places are really interesting. Everywhere is very busy and noisy and it's completely safe! Good grief what have you been reading? The Daily Mail!! Like any busy place in London you need to watch your valuables but wouldn't you do that anyway? Oh and don't buy any drugs...doh.

brixton Brixton market

I've lived in Brixton for 8 years, in various parts. I often walk home up to 12 at night. Not sure what you mean by 'safe' but you are not going to get mugged in broad daylight in a busy market! If you're worried about your wallet, well I've never been pickpocketed in Brixton (or anywhere else in London actually). The only area I've ever felt unsafe in the triangle around Myatt's Fields, and that's because it's really quiet, there are no main roads and lots of estates. But that area could be classed as Oval or Camberwell as much as Brixton.

brixton Brixton academy, tell me if its safe afterwards

Hello, my son and a couple of his mates want to see Little Britain Live at the academy. I'm not sure what time it ends but I assume it will be around 10.30/11pm. They will taking the bus there and back and no adults are able to accompany them.

I want to know if Brixton is a really unsuitable area to be going at 15 years old or if its not that much different to the rest of London.

P.s. What is shopping in Brixton like in the morning and what time do the markets open?

Appreciate a reply

brixton Brixton Academy

Hi

ok i grew up in Brixton and the Academy itself is safe but i think for the time the show ends it's risky for two 15yr olds to be alone. I discourage my brother from walking about that particular area around the academy and the market at such hrs and he is 22yrs old. My sis nearly got attacked also last yr about that time.

So no , it is not safe for them unacompanied, too many undesireable elements at play at that hr and two 15 yr olds wud draw unwanted attention.

Post reply -->London brixton Alex 24 Oct

brixton Safe? Depends on the context...

I'd say that if they are coming out of the Academy with everyone else, then as long as they keep their wits about them then they should be fine. It is always busy after an event, lots of like-minded people making their way home also

brixton Flat on Coldharbour Lane - what to expect?

Hello, I'm looking at rent =ing a 2 bed flat on Coldharbour Lane in Grosvenor Mansion. On the back is a railway line but that doen't bother us too much and is situated in between the atlantic road junction and Hinton Road junction but nearer Hinton Road. I'd juts like to know what the area is like in day and night time, travelling to the city, places to eat and anything extra anyone could kindly add.

Thanks

brixton

The dodgier end of CHL IMHO. IIRC It's just round the corner from Loughborough Junction and this stretch was very very dangerous a few years back. I know Loughborough Junction is having a load of money pumped into it due to regeneration...so the area may be a little nicer/safer these days.

brixton Flat on Coldharbour Lane

it's probably not what you want to hear, but I wouldn't live in that area again. We lived in Myatt's Fields for a year, so had to use Loughborough Junction station. It had a bad vibe and I never felt safe there after dusk. There are a lot of estates nearby and the side roads never felt very safe. It's probably alright if you live on the main road, and it may have changed since then (2001). We went to eat at Nando's and the Sun & Doves pub, both on Coldharbour near Camberwell, a bit of a walk from Hinton Road.

brixton ...... dont believe the hype Dean - trust me....

and the food is fantastic.

On Brighton Terrace (off Brixton Road oppo Woolworths) is Mothers Touch, again a Jamaican cafe (only 3 tables here), but the food is to die for.

There are loads more places to eat in Brixton - I was born and brought up there, but I think I'm about to run out of space.

I would love to take you around Brixton and show you it's bark is much, much worse than it's bite.

Thanks for your reply, I think you got the impression that I was some kind of small minded boy who hasn't been out yet. But I'd just like to say I'm just about the opposite.

I made my e-mail sound a bit like little boy lost just so I got a reply. But thanks for the concern. I used to live in Herne Hill but have been living in Motspur Park fror the last 6 years.

I just wanted to make sure I don't have to worry about anything when I go there but obviosly keep your wits about you.

Thanks anyway

There's a decent Organic Cafe on Coldharbour Lane...can't remember the name of the place but it's about 100 yards down Coldharbour Lane on the left hand side...it aint too pricey either.

Failing that The Ritzy Bar above the cinema, does OK...ish Lunchtime Pizza's & Italian Fare.

Both are within a few minutes walk of the Junction of Acre Lane & Brixton Road.

brixton Dean dont believe the hype....

My Darling Dean,

Bless you. Brixton is no better or worse than 99% of London, or almost any inner city for that matter.

I will excuse you because of your age, but even so where on earth do you live!!!! and your parents need to encourage you out and about a bit more - you really need to grow up and start experiencing a bit more of what life and people have to offer you and stop being so fearful - because you will attract bad experiences and people to you.

Use your common sense, but travel around with your ears, eyes, mind and heart open.

Brixton has loads of places to meet up with friends and eat or have a drink depending on what your tastes are of course:-

On Coldharbour Lane, down the side of the Ritzy Cinema, which is diagonal to the Town Hall, the Satay Bar is wonderful (food is Thai/Malay) - nice atmos.

On Acre Lane again opposite the Town Hall is Bamboula a Jamaican restaurant (it's a bit small in there), but from about 11.30 to 2.30

brixton School kid having to travel through Brixton

I am in the last year of high school and have to go for an interview on Clapham High Street at Soho Gyms. To get there I pick up the 37 bus at North Dulwich station and have to go through Brixton town centre.

Obviously, I'm fine on a bus but I have to meet a friend on the corner of Acre Lane in the town centre and I'm having lunch there and then getting back on 37 to go to Clapham High Street.

I feel a bit vulnerable doing this journey and having lunch in brixton as I'm just 16 even though I will be there at around 10.00 AM.

Is there anything to worry about and if not could you recommend a place for lunch in that part of Brixton.

Thanks
