brixton friendly Catholic Church

I'm trying to find a friendly catholic church for a friend who's recently arrived in the UK knowing pretty much noone. He is catholic and likes going to church and i thought it would be a good place for him to meet people - any suggestions for a friendly catholic church where people might e.g. have coffee together afterwards?

brixton friendly catholic church in brixton...

hi there, i can recommend 3 churches - the first is 'st mary - the redemptorist' opposite clapham common tube - beautiful interior - the monastery was designed by bentley, and there's an amazing reproduction of the greek icon - our lady of perpetual succour (in rome) - coffee is served after am mass on sunday and there's a young person's group 'very clapham'! that meet for supper and wine etc - then there is the old jesuit church pass brixton prison amazing music - carribean, celtic and latin! not so sure about coffee though! and finally there is the old calvinist now catholic church 'our lady of the rosary' turn right out of brixton tube 2wards the oval - not as cultured and dynamic as the other 2 but again an amazing painting is appearing in the sanctuary created by a young mother on her own as a prayer! byzantine in mannerism pretty impressive for such a poor parish.

brixton Beyond perceived reality, An exhibition of works by Adam Campbell Jones

Private View 24th of August - 6 pm to 11 pm
Exhibition runs from 25th - 30th of August 2007
Gallery Opening Hours Monday – Saturday 2.30 pm - 6.30 pm

Campbell-Jones’ work is based on his fascination with nature, technology and engineering. He strongly feels that in an age where technology is advancing ever so rapidly, micro-technology and science should be implemented by artists more than he perceives is done by his contemporaries. As an artist he firmly opposes art forms that solely rely on sensationalism, shock value and ’naval-gazing’ on behalf of the artist. Campbell-Jones believes that the creation of art is a never-ending quest that ought to fall back on skill, observation and discovery.

brixton A newbie wants help

Hello, I have Just moved to a flat-share in Brixton from North London, and do not know the area at all or do my friends. My work mates have now told me stories of it being very unsafe. Like I was told that do not carry cash, iPod phone or anything on me or in sight, keep my keys separate than in my bag, and at some point I will get mugged. That scares me as I sometimes come home late in the dark. I live on Beechdale Road. I moved there because it is cheaper and easier for me to get to work. Also are there good places to eat, hairdressers’ (not African), What is it like to live there, Stuff to do, and other general knowledge would be appreciated. I have discovered the Ritzy, which seems great!
Thank you.
Carla

brixton

Brixton Hill is lovely. Trust me...I've lived here for over 10 years and can tell you the area has never been better than it currently is.

Beechdale Road is also a lovely road...plenty of families live on that road and it's one of the nicer roads off the Hill.

For nightlife, try the White Horse, South Side Bar on Brixton Hill. You also have a real nice Bohemian pub on Brixton Water Lane called Mango Landin'. Further into Central Brixton you have the Ritzy, Lounge, Max Olivers Coffee Bar, plus plenty of other places.

Don't be fooled into believing stories from strangers and folks who read too much into Brixton's past...it's a very entertaining and affluent part of South London now, very much like East Dulwich or Clapham in it's infancy.

Thank you, I have walked past these bars and wondered what they were like, I will go there after work or perhaps at the weekend to see what the area is like.

brixton This is rubbish...

Entertainnig and affluent? Brixton may be entertaining if you are affluent, but for teenagers shot dead in fights over gold chains and people who keep machetes behind the door it is a community with sadnesses and problems. People who pass through for a few years and think it is like being on holiday have little idea of the reality of the area.

It is nothing like "East Dulwich or Clapham in its infancy". Firstly those areas were already grown up before the middle classes and thier money arrived. Do you think nothing exists prior to you and yours?

In any case, Brixton has gone upmarket (at least partly) in a different way to East Dulwich. It is more oriented to singles and clubbing, whereas East Dulwich and Clapham are more "nappy valley".

You are likely to be mugged in Brixton. It is possible you may bring it on yourself and never understand why.

Could you learn from it? What would you learn?

brixton Elmore House

Hi im looking to buy a place in Elmore house just off Loughborough Rd, is that a dodgey area, like muggings and stuff and what are the rent prices around there?

Post reply -->London brixton Mr S 19 Jun

^

brixton Yes.

I've lived there all my life and Loughborough is by far the worst area of Brixton; the junction included. The estates there are easily the crappest in Brixton, there are more shootings and stabbings here than any other area of London, in general; Minet Road and Loughborough in particular. It's right next to Angell Town as well which used to be terrible but has changed quite significantly now. Last year, around 4 people were murdered in the estate alone. Most of the crap that happens here isn't put in the papers or anything, so all these yuppies posting on this page don't know anything about actually "living" in Brixton because they'll never integrate into a community that is mixed-up with gang culture. All they know is the academy and where to get a wi-fi connection. As for the rent, it's too high for the crap you're living in. Put it this way: the bars on the estate's doors and windows are there for a reason. And the post about it being like East Dulwich/Clapham: WOW.

brixton ‘Living In Future Pasts/Living In Futures Past’ an installation of works by Tom Robinson

I’ve just finished eating a bowl of cereal and drinking a cup of tea. I watched ‘Brazil’ the night before last, and read an article on robot technology in the paper yesterday. These voices from the past and the present telling me about future-present living made me conscious that I made my tea myself, rather than receiving it from an efficient or erratic breakfast automaton.

brixton Lambert Road - what is it like to live here?

Thinking of moving to Lambert Road but not familiar with the area... currently live clap south. any info about it would be great. Is Brixton water lane a problem area at all?

brixton lambert road

I was brought up on Lambert road, and bought a flat there. and seen many changes, its a really lovely quiet road, with fantastic property, within the catchment area of lambeth's top primary schools. I am seeing more and more families moving to the area. Prices are certainly going up in the area but you still get value for money. It's certainly one of the better roads in the area.

Lambert Road is quite a good street..always has been really.

Brixton Water Lane is fine....not dodgy at all.

Value For Money? That's if you consider paying 315-360K for a pokey 2 bed flat Value For Money?

Brought up in Stockwell and have lived in Brixton for the past 10 years....the house prices are totally imbalanced and ridiculously expensive.

I'm not bitter...I have my own place and was lucky to buy years ago...but the prices now are crazy.

brixton Southwyck House

Looked at a flat here to buy yesterday, decent sized rooms, nice patio, near tube. They have secure entry and a "concierge", it certainly felt safe enough, but today when I started doing some research, the area around it keeps coming up as a haven for junkies. Anybody have a recent view on the building/area?

Post reply -->London brixton Art 2 May

brixton

Terrible problems round there with Junkies....always have been.

AVOID.

Post reply -->London brixton 3 May

brixton Thanks

Do you think it's that bad? I mean, I've read about this problem but it seems to have improved. The entrance I would be using is on the side closest to the railton road. I did a test run walk at 10.30 at night and what impressed me is that Coldharhour lane on the Brixton end is quite busy and lit, what with the dogstar pub being open till 2 most evenings, other businesses and restaurants being open. For the most part it looks fine, the only thing is the last 20 or 30 yards to the front part of the building, where you might have to run an "obstacle course".

Post reply -->London brixton Art 8 May

brixton

Whilst I don't want to put you off from your perspective purchase of the flat... I do feel that whole area is most definitely the "sketchiest" part of Brixton.

I've lived in and around Brixton all my life and the Somerlyton Road area has always been rife with problems.

The area has improved...this I won't deny...but around 2 or 3 years ago...it was more or less a no go area after say Midnight.

I do agree, if you keep to the main roads (Railton or Coldharbour) then it's fine...it's just that stretch behind & in front of the estate on Somerlyton & Moorland roads..can get quite dodgy at night.

Post reply -->London brixton 12 May

^

brixton Seriously.

Just don't go near Loughborough Junction, that's all. The only thing you're gonna get around the Valentia area nowadays are drug dealers constantly asking you to buy something and kids who think they're the dog's bits. But they're all little teenagers too busy shooting at each other to worry about you. Having said that, if a school bus full of kids can get caught in the cross-fire of two rival gangs on either side of the main high street, you're pretty much miffed whereever you are in Brixton.

Post reply -->London brixton Jumping. 24 Jun

brixton Brixton - Southwyck House

Someone murdered close to there recently, an argument started outside the block and led to stabbing. Drug users/dealers are able to access the block at night, as it can be really difficult for concierges to refuse some of these individuals. Some of the young people from the estate and surrounding area are responsible for street/bike robberies. Thinking of the long-term, the flat might be very hard to sell. All told, it is partly about attitude - if you're cool with living there, you probably won't find it too bad and, as others have said, most of the problems are late at night.

Post reply -->London brixton Georgie 17 May

^

brixton To Georgie

That's an interesting point, that the concierge would be "intimidated" into letting in some of the unsavoury characters. Hadn't considered that. Anyway, it doesn't matter, the seller has changed his mind and decided to stay where he is!
