brixton

I used to walk through that estate all the time
I'm a young female and a week ago I walked through and there was s bunch of kids between the ages of 9 and 16
I felt uneasy as soon as I saw them
One of then started following me and tried to mug me, I screamed and ran away
There were residents all around - all just looked on and did nothing
It was so scary and I now feel extremely uneasy as I live near by but most certainly will never walk through there again
The police were really great although we did not find the kid ( he was about 15 and so violent)
I have always stood up for Brixton - but it has let me down and I will be moving when my lease is up

brixton The truth about Brixton

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are considering buying a flat on the Loughborough Estate in Brixton and I would like some up-to-date opinions on what Brixton is like as a place to live. I know the area reasonably well but obviously its very different to actually live there. It is very important to me to feel safe so any info on the prevalence of crime/violence would be appreciated. I love Brixton by day and can clearly see the community spirit and happy atmosphere but is it the same at night?

Artists are asked to submit several images indicative of the work they would like to make for the show, or an image of an existing piece, along with a statement, CV, contact details and a website link if available by 12th November 2010.

brixton Submerged: An exhibition of installation works by Ilse Mikula

Red Gate Gallery
209a Coldharbour Lane
London SW9 8RU
Tel: 020 73260993

Private View: Fri 2nd of July 2010 – 6.00 pm to 11.00 pm
Exhibition runs from: Fri 2nd of July – Thursday 8th of July 2010

Sat: 12.30pm - 5.00 pm
Last day of Exhibition: Thurs 8th of July: 10.00 am to 5.00 pm

Ilse Mikula endeavours to explore what links us to a place and a sense of belonging. When we are in a place, it is determined by its physicality and spatial limitation, once we leave the location, all that links us to the space is a process of reminiscence and emotional reflections. Thus through absence the place becomes memory.
