Post or Ask something here in 'Wanstead' Wanstead What will the Wonder turn into?Somebody had to start one, so here it it. You may be thinking 'What the?', so what will the Wonder of Woolies in Wanstead turn into? Some are probably thinking it will be a Tesco's, but do we really need another convenience store, we already have Londis and Somerfiled (soon to be Co-Op) and also the smaller independent shops selling groceries, but do we need another, similiar to the coffee shops. Could it be a WH Smith, but also may not as other shops nearby sell papers, but on the other hand they also sell Books and Music. I would rather see more of a home and furniture shop selling affordable home furniture items rather than selling the expensive items which in the world of credit crunch most people may not afford. What are your thought's. I also wonder if the possible trader who would move into the building previously Woolworths ever read local web entries, do you agree? Post reply -->London Wanstead Graham 1 Jan ^ WansteadI've heard that it is a "done deal" that Tesco's will be moving in. A great shame as we really do not need another supermarket. A Wilkinsons would have been far better - there's nowhere in the high street now where you can buy, for example, haberdashery items. I, for one, will not be setting foot in Tesco's. If everyone did the same and voted with their feet the chain would soon get the message and clear off. People, like they do at Starbucks, will go in there and no doubt complain when another independent trader goes under... Unfortunately, I can't say the same for all the dim livestock who go in everyday and help destroy the independents. However, is Tesco really a 'done deal'? We had this a few months ago when the old Woolwich shut down on the High Street. Then a rumour went round saying Tesco had taken over the Majestic building. Any hard facts??? The reason people frequent places such as Starbucks is that they know basically what they will be getting (i.e. good coffee at a reasonable price). That is why there are so many of them around. It's all very well going local this and local that, but it is up to these independent places to provide a comparable or better product at a similar or better price. I'd say having a tescos would be good for Wanstead as they would only be competing with Sommerfields and since when did you ever do your shopping in Londis? How much do you think they make on this??? Well, if you think that's value, you deserve what you get! But then, that's the problem isn't it. People like you just can't see the bigger picture. It's not just about the High Street, it's about the unethical and aggressive techniques Starbucks and Tesco use (maybe Starbuck's coffee wouldn't be so bad if they didn't actively block Fair Trade agreements). Also, the trading practices of Tesco. Where to start??? As a famous quote goes: 'A prediction for the future: Capitalism will continue to shaft stupid and lazy people. Neither group will complain'. Absolutely bowled over to discover LIVE MUSIC. A great little Irish band were playing traditional Irish music. Asked at the bar and was told this happens most Wednesdays, about 8 or 9 onwards.
