Walworth Bonfire night in Iliffe StreetDoes anyone remember big bonfires being built in the middle of the roads. I am sure that I saw a huge bonfire that had been built in the middle of Iliffe Street when I was a little girl but nobody believes me. It would have been late forties or early fifities. Also does anyone remember my Dad Mr. McDonald who was a teacher at the Nelson school round about that time. The headmistress was a lady called Miss Byron. Post reply -->London Walworth 6 Nov Should we remove this post ? ^ WalworthCan't recall bonfires in the middle of the road, but many were built on the bomb sites for firework night. I started at Nelson School in 1959 and my first teacher was a Mr McDonald, quite possibly your father. He left in around 1960 if I remember correctly. He was a tall, slim chap. Having said that, most adults appear tall when you're eleven years old. Post reply -->London Walworth Del. 12 Nov Should we remove this post ? ^ WalworthWe lived at 77, Crampton Street (right opposite Iliffe Street). When it was demolished, the site our house was on was made into a play area and called "Mrs Martin's Old Back Yard" by the council. I went to Nelson school from 1955-1959. I very vaguely remember a Mr McDonald and also heard about Miss Byron, because my two older brothers also went to Nelson. My brothers were 8 years and 11 years older than me. Mail-me Post reply -->London Walworth Pat Martin 5 Feb Should we remove this post ? ^ WalworthYou are quite right. The old houses were knocked down and a play area was created. The local residents also helped in the making of the park, don't give the council all the credit. I remember as a kid working in the construction. I know because I lived in Iliffe Street at the time and Mrs. Martin was my grandmother. She lived in the houses that were knocked down to create the park. Apparently she used to let the kids from the flats play in the back garden. Post reply -->London Walworth Dave Martin 19 Feb Should we remove this post ? Walworth HUGMAN FISHMONGERSMy mother Brenda Jordan (Nee Holloway) is currently trying to trace back her family tree. Her Mother was Ellen Mary Hugman, she married Bert Holloway (Albert). She is the daughter of George Thomas Hugman born about 1889 and Alice Rosina born about 1880. We so far have managed to go back three generation's although at the moment we need to clarify these are correct. (Benjamin Hugman Born about 1860 (who also comes up as John Benjamin Kent) and also William Hugman Born about 1822).
