Walworth Leverstock Place - anyone know where this was please?

The year is 1901 and the residence I am looking for is "Leverstock Place". I've checked the online 1868 map and the street indexes of the 1891, 1901 & 1911 Censuses and the search engines, of course, and drawn a blank. I would have expected it to be somewhere off East Street. Can anyone help woth locating this place please?

Walworth Doctor Street, Elizabeth Street, Phelp Street.

Does anyone out there have any memories or photo`s of the above streets - lower Westmoreland Road area.I`m desperate to know if these houses were two or three storey. Phelp Street goes back to 1882 and had a pub on the corner called The Portland Arms.

Walworth Passey Fish Shop

I am trying to find a picture of my great grandfathers Fish Shop which I think was in the Walworth Road/Elephant & Castle in 1916. It was called Passey and was a restaurant as well. There was an Iron Foundary next door.

Walworth

Back in the early 1950's there used to be an old chap who came round the streets of Walworth selling ice cream from a very ornately painted hand cart. It had brass spirals, which supported the brightly coloured canopy over the top. It was a real work of art. Us kids referred to him as 'Jack,' but I have no idea whether or not that was his real name. I doubt it, because although he didn't say much and it was therefore hard to know whether or not he had an accent, he did have a slightly tanned and weathered face and looked a bit Mediteranean. There were several well-known families of Italian origin in the area back then who made their fortune from the ice cream business, (Manzi & Roffo, Esposito, Panarella etc.,) and I wonder if he was one of them. Does anyone remember him from their childhood?

Walworth Jack, the ice cream man

Remember him well, but apart from Jack, did not know any other name or from where he came originally. My father used to repair his freezers for him in a place at the corner of Penrose Street and Penton Place. His ice cream was absolutely delicious, but no idea why. If the brass spirals were not in place a penny would fit exactly in the hole. Jack never got annoyed if you put your penny in there and could not get it out. Your description of him is spot on.

Thanks for that, George. Yes, you've reminded me that dear old Jack did have the patience of a saint where kids were concerned, and that his ice cream was delicious. I think his cornets came in two sizes. Tupenny and threpenny. He also sold tubs, which were prettilly patterned and which I never bought because I think they were about fourpence. Too expensive for me. Although I lived in Danson Road, I spent my play days at my nan's in Tarver Road and Jack always entered from the Berryfield Road end on his regular rounds. Talking of Berryfield Road, do you by any chance remember the Road just off of it that was all prefabs? I can't remember the name of it, but it ran paralel with Tarver Road, down to Delverton Road and there was a bomb site on the left between the two roads. The prefabs were demolished around 1956. At the top end, just off Berryfield, there was a wall which we used to climb over. It conveniently had a shelf on the other side where you could stand and look over the parapit

To continue. (First message was trimmed as it was too long.) That wall was known to us as the 'L.E.B.' wall, so I guess at one time it was the property of the London Electricity Board. Perhaps a former sub-station. It was completely empty when we used to play there. It made a great fort for games of cavalry v Indians!

Walworth My old Grandfather was born

My old grandfather, Fred White, was born in East Lane,
(number 1), in 1871, I haven't got much info on him but I do know he was a docker on the Thames at one time, and finally moved to Kent , with barges, settling on the Isle of Sheppey by the early 1900's, where he died in 1952. I do not know if he was a cockney, but I have often thought he was. His ship mates in the Royal Navy would have known though.

I lived at number 43 Danson Road until 1957. They were four-storey terraced houses and had niether electricity nor hot water. The street was demolished in the mid 1970's and is now a walkway with grass verges. There used to be a dairy on one corner, (Davies's I think,) and what we used to call an 'oil shop' on the other corner.
I was ten years old when I moved away from Danson Road and do not recall your aunt's name. Names that do spring to mind from my time there are: Gatling, Howard, Penrose, Grover, Ward and Wilkinson.

Walworth South Street (Dawes Street) Pre-War

My family (Bellamys) lived in South Street which is now Dawes Street from the 1800s until after WW2. They lived in a number of houses in the street and my great gran owned a draper's shop on the corner of South Street/Wooler Street. Her parents lived next door at 102 South Street and her father owned a wood yard at the back of the houses. He would take his wares to sell at East Street market. He was also a local councillor

Walworth Victoria House, East Street.

I'm looking for the exact location of Victoria House (or Buildings) in the early 70's. Walking from Walworth Rd, it was on the left, past Brandon St and next door to a pub. It had 6 floors, I think. It stood on it's own (not part of a terrace like Blendon Row). The front room and bedroom overlooked East St, and the entrance was a little way down a road off East St. As far as I recall, next to it was a tarmac playground. Does anyone know what street the entrance was in and where Blendon Row was in relation to it. Thanks for any help!

Post reply -->London Walworth Leslie 23 Feb

Managed to find the answer myself. A visit to the Local History Library revealed it was on the corner of East Street and Blendon Row, so a seperate tenament block, but part of that filthy row of blocks.

Walworth

As a kid back in the early 1950's I lived in Danson Road, at the Braganza Street end of Manor Place.
Behind us, opposite Lorrimore Square, there was an old shop with a yard attached called, 'Peplow's.' It seemed to sell everything , but I mostly remember it for hardware. I am trying to put together some memoirs and if anyone can help with info about this shop I would be grateful.
Many thanks,
Del.
