As long as you take sensible precautions it's a friendly place to live, whereas don't get me started on Dalston - the mugging I experienced was the main reason we left..... The local paper has some grim stories, but honestly I don't think crime here is better or worse than most of east London. The Village has a nice feel and some very happy looking people.
