Post reply -->London WALWORTH CWG 4 Sep WALWORTHCan anyone share memories of, and/or have, photos of Manor Place, Walworth from the 1950's? I spent the first ten years of my life in Danson Road, (the Braganza Street end of Manor Place,) and have very fond memories of it as a thriving little community. Shops such as: Carter's the newsagents., Harry Morrish's sweetshop, Tozer's the butchers, Bernie Phillips's grocerry shop, Davies's dairy, the 'oil shop', on the corner, etc. etc. And of course the 'Rose' public house, where we held our Coronation day celebrations because the rain ruined our planned streetb party. I would love to hear back from anyone who can share my memories. Harry Morrish was a lovely old fellow and he had all the patience in the world where us kids were concerned. I remember Bernie Phillip's bike. A big old black iron contraption with a cage on the front for carrying the groceries. Yabley's the snobs was next to the cafe that did the best pie, peas and chips in the world. (And the best gravy!) Bill Yabsley lived just around the corner from his shoe menders shop. I think he lived at number 5 Tarver Road. His wife was named Jessie and she had wonderful long red hair. I think he had three kids. The oldest was a son who's name escapes me. Then there was Linda, (who everyone fancied,) and his youngest son, Paul. Do you remember Frankie Fuller, the greengrocer in Manor place? My nan used to hire his services every year to take her down hopping on the back of his lorry! Post reply -->London WALWORTH del 9 Nov WALWORTH Webb/Cope Family, Inville Road, WalworthDoes anyone remember the Webb/Cope family from Inville Road of the 30's and 40's? Any information or photos would be appreciated. Post reply -->London WALWORTH George 25 Aug WALWORTH Jacobus van DyneDoes anyone remember a character who used to hang around Walworth during the 1950's and 60's by the name of Jacobus Van Dyne? He was a heavilly tattoo'd man, including if I remember rightly, his face, which was very unusual in those days. Legend had it that he spent many years in America and at one time had worked for Al Capone. Post reply -->London WALWORTH Derek 20 Aug ^ WALWORTH Jacobus Van DyneYeah i heard he did, i want to know if stories ive heard are tru about Van Dyne as well because sposably Jack Ringo bought his head for 50pound and tattoed the leopard man himself. is that true? Post reply -->London WALWORTH dazza 24 Aug ^ WALWORTH gringo_@.co.uki remember dan and the tales we used tosing dan dan the tattoo man he just used to smile what a character Post reply -->London WALWORTH green 12 Sep ^ WALWORTH Jacobus Van DyneIf you go on youtube and type in 'Soapboxing' - Hyde Park Corner circa 1963, you can see the above character about 2.50 minutes into the video. Post reply -->London WALWORTH 6 Nov ^ WALWORTHI never knew of the Jack Ringo story. I remember Van Dyne as a mysterious character who just seemed to pop up every now and then. He was quite a regular sight at the fairground at the Ele[hant & Castle each year and then would seem to disappear. Then one day you'd be walking down the street and along would come Van Dyne. The last time I saw him was 1965 in Penrose Street. I was 18 at the time and had just started a job at the sorting office there. We were just unloading the postal van when Van Dyne walked past us. I did hear that he was a guest on Dave Allen's chat show back in the 1970's, but I missed that episode. It would have been very interesting and may have answered a few questions. I have often wondered how Dave Allen's researchers came up with Van Dyne as an idea for a guest. I can only assume that he had quite a past and that the Al Capone legend was true after all. Post reply -->London WALWORTH derek 24 Aug ^ WALWORTH^ WALWORTHhmm yeah spose only want to no is to get on utube or summet. jack ringo was a tattotish in woolwich he sold up a few years ago well quite a few years ago now.
