Tulse Hill Lost in Tulse Hill

Hi,

I lived at Churston Close in Tulse hill from 1946 till 1960 then moved to Leigham Vale from 1960 till 1980. I had a friend just down the road in Tulse Hill that I lost contact with years ago. I figure if you remember the horse trough you might know someone who can trace my friend Lorna Taylor, she had a brother Robert. I still go back to walk in Brockwell Park whenever I am back in the country.

Tulse Hill The Railway

Recently refurbished, this pub is right next to the station and has a really good atmosphere. The guys who own it are friendly and have created a very convivial environment. The beer garden at the back is huge and pretty stylish. they have and outdoor barbie and cocktail bar during the summer.

It tends to be lively during the week (more so if they're playing SKY sport) and louder at the weekend.

The White Hart just down the road is a far classier venue... I challenge anyone to disagree!

White Hart great if you're 80, like having your own tarnished tankard hung up behind the bar, and want most of the guests at your funeral to be your pub's regulars. Railway far better - a great pub. Surprisingly decent food for the price too.

Tulse Hill Lancasters (on the way to West Norwood)

Lancaster is stricly in West Norwood but its only a few minutes up Norwood Road (on the junction with York Hill). Its got a nice friencly atmosphere and the food is fairly reliable. There's only one restuarant in TH (Bar 196) - its usually empty so I've never been. Otherwise the best bar in TH itself, the Railway, now does food - I've only tried the Sunday roast but it was lovely. Otherwise go to Herne Hill where Cafe Provencial and Three Monkeys are both great, or Brixton which has loads of good eateries.

Bar 196 is a sweet restaurant, although almost always empty(!) it's a favourite of ours. Reasonable pizzas and good garlic bread with a drinkable house plonk. The staff are friendly and unpretentious, I feel sorry that no-one goes to their restaurant! Must say though it had far more character when it was called The Italian Job and had model mini cars along the banisters and lots of fake geraniums everywhere!

Tulse Hill The best bits about Tulse Hill

For me it's being close to Brockwell park that offers a great running space, swimming pool and open space for summer, still being close enough to the bustle of Brixton and it's nightlife and facilities. The rent is lightly cheaper and I think better value for money. You can pick and choose from 3 stations, its close to Herne Hill which is very upcoming and there are some quite good restaurants. It's still close enough to central london to afford a cab, without breaking the bank and the people are friendly - I know my neighbours on both sides, its a community feel - it's slightly alternative and very cosmopolitan.

Tulse Hill Dentist

The dentist i use is actually in west norwood, about 10 min walk. It is NHS and easy to register, I dont know the actual address but if you go to west norwood bus station, look for Knights Hill and it is practically at the begining of the hill, on a corner, easy to find if you try!

Tulse Hill Does Somerfield count?

The small but adequate Somerfield on the corner of Norwood Road and the South Circular could be considered a super market if there was anything super about it. You will be hard pressed to get a smile or friendly word out of the staff and the aisles aren't big enough for trolleys but hey, maybe you might still want to do a singles night just to amuse the poor drudges stacking the shelves...
