It was a tea, coffee and cake patisserie until war damage, then a cake shop, owned by BA Munier and his son - a photographer. My Mother worked there till the 1960s along with Marie Gibson and Mrs Leary from the Guinness flats. The shop had a cellar and bakery below and a furniture factory and wood yard at the back with an entrance from Windrush Road. Anyone know anything about it? The names are so familiar, I lived in Stoke Newington (there is a website for Stoke Newington but no one seems to talk about the past.) There was a great past in Stoke Newington, Evering Road, Bayston, Darville - everyone must have hung around the Hill though. I went to Fleetwood School, headmaster Mr Freedman, teachers names Mr Giles, Mr Bright-thomas, etc. Used to go to Martin's hairdressers in Clapton. Anyone remember Morry's Milk Bar? Just a quick bus or train ride to the West End and the Empire, Cafe, Marquis but those Sunday dances - waiting for that 73 bus at Stoke Newington Common!, I lived in the U.S. but came home because I missed my roots! I took a step back in time last year and looked around Stoke Newington and the Hill. My Grandfather was one of those gentlemen sitting on the seats along the Hill remembering the old days. Now its my turn! . Post reply -->London Stamford Hill Ros 2 Jun ^ Stamford Hill sq20@hotmail.co.ukI lived until I was 22 in Hendale House Upper Clapton Road (corner of Evering Road and Northwold Road) London E5. I attended Crowland Road School between 1936-1939, and remember the following teachers there: Mr.Nudds, Mr.Rossell, Mr.Frank Cole, Mr.Chappel (the Head) and in particular, Mr.Lees. When I returned to London in 1951, for six months, Mr.Lees, with whom I had corresponded, gave me a tour through some of London's remarkable places, including Westminster Abbey. Prior to coming to Australia I lived in Rostrevor Avenue, Stamford Hill. Would any of the Crowland Rd.School 'oldies' know any thing of these old teachers on mine -- Mr.Lees in particular. My name is John and I have vivid memories of the first eleven years of my life in Stamford Hill. Well, it's a nice thought anyway. I'll be asking the school and the council if anything is being arranged for 2011. If not already done, register on the Friends Reunited site under Crowland Road and keep in touch. I lived in Cadoxton Avenue and was at Crowland Juniors from 1958-1962 (also at the Infants previous to that) and went onto Tottenham Grammar. Does anyone have information from the area between 1924 - 1945? That is when my father grew up there and has very fond memories of the area. He lived in Lower Clapton and attended Upton House, Sigdon Road and Farmer Road. He remembers the Regent and the Super. Does anyone remember the Baum Family, who owned the grocery about 1/4 of a mile down the Hill going towards Tottenham. My father was friends with Maury and Alex Baum. If anyone has information about them, please email me at Mail-me . If you just have memories, please share with us. Great times despite the War and rationing Post reply -->London Stamford Hill leon ruskin 11 Nov ^ Stamford Hill Stamford Hill 1939-67Hi Leon, I clearly remember you and David, Godfrey and Leonard (but not Dougie Worman) from Crowland Road and Tottenham Grammar school. At that time I lived in Castlewood Road (until we moved away in 1962) and I believe that you lived in Leadale Road. I came across Godfrey some years ago when he was in practice in Tottenham but then lost touch with him. I have not had any contact with David Epstein or Leonard Fertleman since we were at school. I am still working and do not really see much prospect of being able to retire at present. Are you still working or have you retired? I have recently been exchanging emails with Sonia Silver who was in our class at Crowland Road and you may remember her. Have you been in touch with anyone from our school days?
