Stamford Hill 1966-1970 routemaster bus drivers conductors conductressHi im desperatley looking for any semi retired / retired Bus drivers who either drove routmasters or conductered / conductressed them in the late 1960s.. My Birth mother was name Wendy Barson and she was a conductress poss working out of Stamford Hill bus depot., as she lived at Stoke Newington.. 1 Dunsmure Road. i do have a few photos of wendy, She worked with a bus driver Bill not sure if Bill was his name or nickname..? Also there was a driver called James or jimmy he was from malta and i think his wife may off been a conductress too.. ive photos of him in the late 60s. Joseph ward or waud believe he was greek cypriot ..? but he did have olive skin and dark hair working or living in the area. Anyone who thinks the names ring a bell or you think it could be you or family Please Please get intouch with me. It's true we would all be trying to get back there but the strange thing is, people are beginning to move back there! For example, my friend's son and his wife and baby, have moved there. I also know someone else who moved there (not particularly orthodox either.) Some parts of Stoke Newington, Church Street, etc., are quite yuppified. Its the proximity to west end, Central London, nice, spacious housing, etc., that attracts people. History of that part of London is interesting - don't wanna bore anyone - but Rothchild family once lived there, Dickens had a home in Springfield Park. There was a gallows once on the Hill, Dick Turpin did his thing in Dalston, Kingsland Road, etc., That's not to mention the many celebs who started off around the Hill and Stoke Newington. Best of all, of course, we came from there - so its gotta be a great place!
