Might be a problem getting a parking space during the match. Traffic is busy for an hour before and after a game but only every other weekend and not all year as football is seasonal. On a side note, my elderly mother lives in South Norwood. The neighbours on her road are extremely friendly, she loves going for walks in the South Norwood Country Park which is teaming with wildlife, and the trams are excellent. It's about 10 mins drive/bus north (so long as you don't try it during rush hour!) just before a large B&Q. The 196 or 468 will take you straight there. Seeing all the worries about how Safe it is, I thought I should add my tuppence worth. As far as I can tell violence, assault and theft is as common now as it was in the early sixties, the only difference is that it is all publicised now. several good friends at school in the 70s were stabbed at one time or another, but then another had his head severed by a shotgun blast in crystal palace in the early eighties. continued in next post ... Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to suggest that such things are rife, just that the worsening state is a myth. I now live in a small village in sussex and a recent stabbing adds to the list that includes a machine gunning in 1945. So I'd suggest chilling out about the fear. Where there is some truth however, is in the well documented outward progression of urban decay that radiates from London. In the early 70s crystal palace was a dump, and thornton heath was quite a village, now C.P. has gentrified and Thornton Heath is on the cusp. continued in next post ... From many years observation I would say that the portland road area, (not the woodside end) has always been a bit Down market, while around the lake and up the hill a bit up market. while east and west towards penge and croydon are fairly mixed and reflect the state of the next towns along. Watching the decay radiate out, it seems obvious that the thornton heath end of S Norwood has become more like streatham was 20 years ago, while the hill seems to be doing more like Crystal Palace. continued in next post ... My prediction is: that in 20 years time, S Norwood High street will be a Shi-shi pedestrianised heritage high street with restaurants and interior decor shops/florists while upper Portland Road will be a trendy Deli, bar type area with independant shops. Woodside green on the other hand will be a police no-go area and burnt out car recycling yard and there will be a border (with checkpoints) between west croydon. The Island on Norwood lake will become a tapas bar and the Rec will be planted as an arboretum. But before any of this can happen South Norwood Clock Tower must once again be painted Matt White, as it was intended to be. continued in next post ... You could alway get home in the early hours by catching the fast train from Viccy to gatwick and get off at the closed Selhurst station because the train used to slow to walking speed. I don't think it's a knock on from the strike. It was occurring before this. One night a few months ago the postman delivered at 10.15pm NO LIE. I SPOKE WITH HIM. HE WAS DOING OVERTIME . It seems too that thinhs being sent first class are either arriving very late in afternoon the following day , but more commonly, 2-3 days later. It is near to the junction of South Norwood Hill and Whitehorse Lane, so only 5 mins walk to football ground. Doctor Attard is the tops at this 3 Doctor practice, though if you prefer a lady doctor, Doctor Cutler would do as well. Also the reception staff are the complete opposite to the usual ogres and miserable tyrants (receptionist My Hero TV prog) one encounters. Have been registered here for 31 years. I'd be moving to streets not that far from Selhurst park, so I imagine that I'd be withing their catchment area. Do they give you enough time to explain your problems to them? The trouble is the food is overrated and overpriced. Take the mixed starters for £8.90. The pancakes are good. The prawns are good. The toast is okay at best. The wan tons are burned. Burned. Not good. No. Not good at all. Do not pay full price. The chicken sticks. Satly. If I want brine chicken I'd drown my own at Brighton. Beer. Overpriced. This isn't central london. Don't pay london price in south norwood where the rent, okay is going up, but is still a fraction of that of the west end. The atmosphere is fine, the drink is fine. The wine is actually a good price. But take the good with the bad. Norwood needs more places like this. It does. But it has better restaurants already. As a BAR this is in a league of its own. I've visited the area a fair bit in the past and it looks a pretty good, nice area to me, never seen any trouble, though I've only been during the daytime. Is the night time really that bad? I'd be getting the train home from work sometimes very late at night, would that be advisable? I've lived in Toxteth in the past so am used to rough areas.
