What are the best places to live? Am I better off living in Richmond? Buy or rent? typical price? Any info will be helpful Thanks! Post reply -->London Mortlake JJ ^ Mortlake Watch out for the main road!I love living in Mortlake, I've been here over a year and eat out a lot and haven't even got close to eating in all the restaurants; pluses are the parks [esp Richmond], river, pubs, supermarkets, a brilliant butcher! But watch out for living above shops on the main road, Upper Richmond Road West. The traffic never really dies down. With double glazing you should be ok but when the weather hots up, like it did recently, on rooms which face the road it's either have the windows closed [baking hot] or have it so noisy you can't hear anyone speak.! Post reply -->London Mortlake AJW 16 Aug Mortlake Mortlake High SchoolI have just found this site and want to know if the high school is still there? I went to the school during the fifties and maybe some of the pupils at the school will read this. I left England in 1959 and went to NZ, but have lived in Australia for the last 26 years. Regards Chris Smith Post reply -->London Mortlake schoolChris Smith ^ MortlakeChris, Mortlake school closed down around 1964 and moved to Londsdale road in Barnes. I had my final year at school there Post reply -->London Mortlake 7 Jun ^ Mortlake White Hart PubVery lively proper pub with a whole mix of customers - ages, types etc. What I particularly like, being a dog owner, is that children aren't allowed but dogs are (!), so there are always a few milling round. Lovely views of the river. Dodgy food. ^ Mortlake The ShipThe Ship is an old traditional pub on the river down by the brewery and has a great community feel to it. Great food (new menu recently) and it wonderful in summer to sit out by the river or in the quiet garden. They also have live music regularly, a brilliant quiz every Tuesday and lots of theme nights (Halloween, Hawaiian etc) where there always seems to be plenty of people dressing up. Great place to go, can really become a perfect 'local'! Post reply -->London Mortlake ^ Mortlake^ Mortlake Live MusicThe White Hart has been doing live music since before Christmas. It starts every Sunday at 8.30. After nine it kicks off ,tables are moved back and the pub becomes a dance floor. Great atmosphere and a mixture of age groups. Post reply -->London Mortlake A fan 8 Jun ^ Mortlake Places to eatAnnie's is ok, and the Treehouse isn't bad either. Depends how much you want to spend - try The Depot - lovely river views if you can get a table. Post reply -->London Mortlake ^ Mortlake MortlakeRiver, history, shops, Barnes Common, Richmond Park. Bit more 'real' than Barnes but just round the corner. Post reply -->London Mortlake livingali ^ Mortlake The Tapestry & The RailwayRecently refurbished, these two places have lovely atmospheres and the food is great. Post reply -->London Mortlake ^ Mortlake Ouch, priceyMortlake comes under the borough of Richmond, so it's a bit on the pricey side. Band D is about 1400 a year now. Post reply -->London Mortlake ^ MortlakeCouncil tax in Mortlake is actually only 1,100, so lower than Ricmond as has been suggested. Post reply -->London Mortlake ^ Mortlake no, theres a Waitrose and SafewaySainsbury's is just down the A316 by car, but waitrose and Safeway are walking distance. Post reply -->London Mortlake supermarket romance friend ^ MortlakeSafeways & Waitrose are only a 5 minute walk from Mortlake train station and they are both large supermarkets situated next to each other. Post reply -->London Mortlake ^ Mortlake trainsWhen you take a train between 7:45 and 9:00, there are only standing spaces at mortlake with more people coming onboard in barnes, putney etc. Take a train before that and, permitting no cancellations etc, a seating place is almost always available. Post reply -->London Mortlake ^ Mortlake Not too bad...Southwest trains have a bad reputation but luckily the main crush is from Putney onwards, you will normally get a seat unless you get on the train between 8am and 8:30am when you will probably have to stand. The trains are all pretty much new now with air conditioning which takes a lot of the stress away and I think they're pretty reliable since they made the timetables more realistic. Hope this helps :-) Post reply -->London Mortlake Oli 25 Oct ^ Mortlake GP practice in MortlakeThe Sheen Lane Medical Centre's good, never had trouble getting an appointment. It's next to the Library on Sheen Lane, 2 mins walk from Mortlake Station. They're on 020 8876 4086. Post reply -->London Mortlake JP 15 Jul |
