Or any shop that sells Polish groceries? Thank you! Mail-me Post reply -->London Liverpool Street Aga 2 Aug Liverpool Street Great Eastern BuildingsI am trying to find out more about these buildings. they were erected in the 19th century (between 1870 and 1890) by the Great Eastern Railway to rehouse people whose homes were demolished to make way for the construction of Liverpool Street Station and Bishopsgate Goods Depot. Dwellings were erected in or near Quaker Street E1, Winchester Street (which I believe is now the eastern part of Cheshire Street E2), and Fieldgate Street E1. Are any of these buildings still surviving, or have they been demolished, either due to wartime bombing or subsequent redevelopment? If you can help, or at least point me in the right direction, many thanks. Post reply -->London Liverpool Street 7 Sep ^ Liverpool Street Great Eastern BuildingsHere is what I have found out: they were built in the early 1890s, when the Great Eastern Railway widened its approaches to Liverpool Street. The ones at Quaker Street consisited of two parallel blocks on the north side of the street and were close the the Great Eastern Railways stables. All this was demolished in the 1970s and the site has since been redeveloped. Post reply -->London Liverpool Street Julian & Phil 8 Sep ^ Liverpool Streetsorry I couldnt finish my message in place of the bldgs is a modern block of flats which were built on this land that I believe was bought by trumans brewery. I will be happy to give any information I can please e,mail me at Mail-me . Post reply -->London Liverpool Street Sheila 7 Sep ^ Liverpool StreetWhen the Great Eastern Railway Company began an enlargement of Liverpool Street Station in 1887, the number of persons displaced by the demolition of ninety-three houses in St. Botolph's Bishopsgate was estimated at 600 for whom the Company was required to provide alternative accommodation by the General Powers Act of the same year. One of the three blocks of buildings built for this purpose was begun early in 1890 at the north-east corner of Quaker Street and Wilkes Street. It was to contain twenty-four one-room and sixty-eight two-room tenements, giving accommodation for 320 persons. The building was completed by October 1890, at a cost of £13,776. The architect was John Wilson, engineer to the Great Eastern Railway Company. Great Eastern Buildings consisted of two long blocks, two rooms deep and four storeys high, placed at a right angle to Quaker Street with the fronts facing each other across an open-ended court Post reply -->London Liverpool Street Ade 20 Feb ^ Liverpool Street Great Eastern Buildings - Family HistoryI am not sure when you posted this request. I am also research Great Easter Buildings, London, because my mother lived there between 1920-1942. We have photographs of my grandparents on the roof of the buildings playing cards, etc. I also found a photograph on the internet taken from the street in 1914. I would very much appreciate any pointers as I am an amature writer and would like to compile a factual record for younger members of the family. Also, as a request to others who may read this, is there anyone else who has family or friends who lived in Great Eastern Buildings between 1920-40ish? Our reletives/friends may have been neighbours!
