Post or Ask something here in 'Kidbrooke' Kidbrooke Westhorne manor schoolDoes anybody know what happened to Frances Pursloe, last heard of in Croydon, who was top girl in 1960 after the school had previously been an all boys chool Post reply -->London Kidbrooke terakunene@yahoo.co.uk 1 Nov Kidbrooke RAF KIDBROOKEOn Sept. 10th, 08 the RAF Linguists' Association are siting a plaque at the Kidbrooke SE Station to mark the presence of the Joint Services Schoolo for Linguists at the former RAF Kidbrooke. I'd be grateful for any info. on the RAF Station, where exactly it was located etc. I understand that it is now a housing estate which is shortly to be demolished. Does anyone remember the Camp? Or perhaps someone worked there. e-mail: Mail-me . Tel: 01453 543992 Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Bry Kingston 2 Apr ^ Kidbrooke RAF KidbrookeFrom 1948 till 1982 I lived in Kidbrooke and remember the Camp, which was located in Kidbrooke Park Road, very well. RAF Kidbrooke which I was led to believe was a supply depot stood on the site of what is now the Thomas Tallis school - the depot did NOT stand on any housing estates as they were located opposite. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Chris Miller 14 Apr ^ Kidbrooke JSSL^ Kidbrooke RAF KIdbrookeRAF Kidbrooke. I lived in Kidbrooke prefabs from 1945 until 1961 being among those first moved on after the 1958 Great Storm and flood. I don’t know when the Kidbrooke airbase was first run down but it must have been very shortly after WW2 and it was rapid. When the base closed there was considerable equipment abandoned and hordes of local males descended on the site to “liberate” what ever was left. My late Father’s share was a large wooden bench which served us well until the bitter winter of 1963. To the best of my recollection the airbase was where the supermarket now stands. The route is due to be extended from January 2009. But we are asking TFL and East Thames Buses who operate route 132 to consider extending the route from 31st December 2008 (New Years Eve) to coincide with New Year Celebrations at the 02 Arena and to take passengers to and from North Greenwich Station (Jubilee Line) for people travelling to and from new year celebrations in Central London. This is great news for the people of Kidbrooke who are normally negelected when it comes to public transport and indeed bus services. ^ Kidbrooke Route 132I agree this is indeed good news for Kidbrooke Rochester Way linking the area to Greenwich Peninsula Shopping Centre and filmworks Cinema as well as North Greenwich Station (Jubilee Line), 02 Arena and Bexleyheath Shopping Centre Route 132 will stop by Sainsburys on the Greenwich Peninsula which is just a few minutes walk from the other shopping Centres and Asda's on Bugsby Way. I hope route 132 will be more frequent when the route is extended to North Greenwich Station. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Kim 25 Oct ^ Kidbrooke Route 132Yes it is good news for Kidbrooke that route 132 is being extended to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) via Greenwich Peninsula. I to hope the route is extended to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) as soon as possible. I also agree New Years Eve 2008 would be a good day for TFL/East Thames Buses to introduce the extension of route 132 to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena). Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Tom & Jo 25 Oct Kidbrooke Routes B16 and 291We are asking Transport For London Buses to introduce the extension of route B16 to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) in the very near future. So the people of Kidbrooke and Eltham can get to the Jubilee Line at North Greenwich Station as well as the 02 Arena. We are also hoping route 291 may be extended from Queen Elizabeth Hospital to Eltham Station via Shooters Hill Road, Kidbrooke Park Road, Kidbrooke Rochester Way. Well Hall Circus, Westhorne Avenue, Eltham Hill, Eltham Church and Well Hall Road. To improve bus services between Eltham Hill, Westhorne Avenue and Kidbrooke Rochester Way with Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Woolwich Town Centre for the first time. It will also provide an improved service to Eltham Station and also link Westhorne Avenue with Eltham Town Centre (High Street) at Eltham Church. So would benefit so many local people. We are asking Local MP's and Councillors to support us to get these local bus service improvements introduced. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Julian Russell 7 Nov Kidbrooke Route B16It is very disappointing to hear the proposed extension of route B16 from Kidbrooke Station to North Greenwich Station (02 Arena) has been delayed. We hope TFL still plan to extend route B16 to North Greenwich Station and the 02 Arena in the near future. This will improve public transport in the Kidbrooke area and provide direct bus inks with the Jubilee Line. As I recall they used to have meetings in the Progress Hall, Eltham; and weekly Sunday trips through the Kent countryside at break-neck speed where they cyclists could not enjoy the landscape. I would think that most of the former members have passed away! Does anyone have any details of when the club folded; any records of club champions; and any further details? And are Cycling Clubs as popular today as they used to be 40/50 years ago? Post reply -->London Kidbrooke 5 Mar ^ KidbrookeHi We have many pictures of the hadrian cycling club back in the 1930's. This club was founded by my Father in law and his friend around 1930. His name was Willian Selves (bill ) and his friend , we think was called reg. ( don't know the surname ) . We have a lot of old photo's of cycling in england and tour de france circuit in 1933/34/35. William Selves had a certificate for the London to Bath ride in under 8 hours. His bike was a Bassett, the shop it came from was opposite Woowich Arsenal Station Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Louise Selves 23 Sep ^ Kidbrooke Hadrian Cycling ClubI heard that Hadrian CC was run by a bloke named Brian Miller and on the committee was someone named Ron Daly. Amongst the membership was Brian Birch and John Guest. Is that true? Post reply -->London Kidbrooke 23 May Kidbrooke TrainsDuring the 1960s I was working an apprenticeship electrician for which I was absolutely useless. As part of that lousy job I had attend a course at a training centre in Camden Town so had catch an overground to central London and change to the Northern Line. Unlike today the overground train services were always on time in those days. However the 07:29 am which I always caught was always two minutes late and passengers could set their watch by it. However, on one occasion this particular service was on time and all the usual passengers missed it. Mind you, we saw the funny side of it! Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Chris Miller 22 May Kidbrooke Coronation Year 1953During Coronation Year 1953, I was eight years old and living in Kidbrooke. I recall the street having an open-air Coronation Party in Fairfax Gardens to celebrate the accession to the throne by HM Elizabeth II. During that year I was attending Kidbrooke Park junior mixed school. All the pupils in our school had to march to a point in the Shooters Hill Road outside "The Fox under the Hill" pub to wait for HM to drive past after her coronation. We waited for 45 minutes for the big event but we did not see anything because the car was a hard-top which went past in two seconds. What a waste of time as we did not see HM because it all happened all too quickly. Anyway, I still have my Presentation Book and Tea-Cup. That year I recall watching the Matthews final on a neighbours black/white television because my parents did not have a TV set at that time; Hilary and Sherpa Tensing conquering Mt Everest. Does anyone else have any memories from that particular year? Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Chris Miller 21 May ^ Kidbrooke CoronationCoronation. Chris, I think your memory is at fault. I too was on that long march to Shooters Hill and the two hour wait just to wave my flag for a few seconds. The Queens car was an open top vehicle and a sullen bored looking Queen just drove past with massive police escort. Two women behind said “she wasn’t even smiling”. Remember the whole school going to the Roxy to see “A Queen is crowned” and later “The conquest of Everest”? Post reply -->London Kidbrooke terakunene@yahoo.co.uk 21 Oct Kidbrooke KidbrookeI was born in Wales during the mid-1940s and moved to Kidbrooke a few years later as my father wanted to find better work other than being a collier. The estate on to which I moved was previously the site a farm. Most of the children in my street were appoximately the same age and attended Kidbrooke Park infants and junior mixed school in Hargood Road and we grew up together until we all dispersed upon leaving senior school during the late 1950s/early 1960s. We used to make our own fun. For example, we used to acquire a tennis ball and the old-style fencing staves minus the wire bit then played improvised hockey with 22 players per side. Unlike the siblings of today we never did anything wrong except get two tones too noisy because we were excited. We also used to play soccer quite a lot. We also used to go swimming at the open-air pool in Hornfair Park. Four of us used to be in the pool from 6 till 7 am because admission was free. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Chris Miller 22 May Kidbrooke Kidbrooke Park Junior SchoolFrom 1949 till 1955 I attended Kidbrooke Park Junior School in Hargood Road. When I first started school we were housed in a wooden structure at lower Dursley Road. After the brick built structure in Hargood Road was completed we had to relocate en-masse - I still recall the smell of chalk and paint. My form teachers were Mrs Gnome, Mr Jeans and Mr Dumphy. My best pal was Bobby Smart who later had to move away because father had to change jobs. Other pals included Jim Wells, Derek Hider and Albert Gale and we all later went onto a senior school together. I would be pleased to hear from anyone from those days. Whilst at Kidbrooke Park junior school I made the school soccer and cricket team; and prefect. When I played for the soccer team (right full-back) I was part of the squad which won the Division 3 championship. Does anyone have any results and league table from that period that they can let me have please? Route B16 route extension will run between Kidbrooke Station and North Greenwich Station (02 Arena). via Kidbrooke Park Road, Blackheath Royal Standard, Westcombe Hill, Greenwich Penninsula (Sainsburys & Cinema) and Millennuim Way. Route B16 will become Bexleyheath Garage to North Greenwich Station at all times via Eltham Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Julian Russell 8 May Kidbrooke Route B16 being extended to North Greenwich StationRoute B16 Bexleyheath to Kidbrooke Station via Eltham is due to be extended to North Greenwich Station (O2 Arena) from May 2007. Route B16 will serve Kidbrooke Park Road, Blackheath Royal Standard, Westcombe Hill, Greenwich Peninsula (Sainsburys & Cinema) and Millennium Way. The evening and Sunday service will operate every 20 minutes instead of every 30 minutes. This excellent news as good frequent public tramsport is required for the area and will improve services to North Greenwich Station and the 02 Arena. Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Julian Russell 6 Apr ^ Kidbrooke Confirmation...The B16 route extention will begin on 19th May 2007. And just to put right any confusion, from Sainsbury's Greenwich Peninsula, the route will NOT serve Millenium Village! Post reply -->London Kidbrooke 14 Apr ^ Kidbrooke Route B16Thanks for letting us know Route B16 will not serve Millennuim Village. Sadly the introduction of route B16 as been delayed and is still not running yet to North Greenwich Station and the 02 Arena as of today 30/06/07. Hopefully TFL will extend the route to North Greenwich Station in the very near future. . Post reply -->London Kidbrooke monika 22 Nov ^ KidbrookeDear who ever, just to say that I live just off Dursely Road in Kidbrooke, I am renting my house. It is not a very nice area, the children around are rude and cheeky, some of them broke into the local Primary school at little while back, and actually ran through my garden with computers and other equipment. Our next door neighbour was growing weed in their house, very unsavoury! We called the Police 3 months earlier but unfortunately nothing was done about it. The language the gangs use is obscene and they shout their heads off in the street, we are too afraid to confront them because they will abuse our property, my car has been very badly scratched (not by me). So if I were you go somewhere else and good luck! My email address is Mail-me Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Lynda 1 Feb ^ Kidbrooke Kidbrooke: safetyI used to live in Kidbrooke for approximately thirty years' and the dormitory suburb was safe until the Ferrier estate was built. Later in life I had a job in central London and had to use Kidbrooke Station getting to/from work. En route I was subject to verbal abuse and physical assault by local yobs who had moved onto the Ferrier Estate; and that was two of the reasons why I moved away from Kidbrooke. A few years' ago I visited a friend who lived near you and was about 100 yards from where I lived. My friend reported that the whole ambience off Kidbrooke had gone into decline during the past three decades and that she was too scared to go out of an evening for the same reasons you mention. You would pass homebase and Thomas tallis secondary school keep walkin down that road Post reply -->London Kidbrooke Joanne 14 Sep ^ Kidbrooke St John Fisher Catholic ChurchSt John Fisher Church is located in Kidbrooke Park Road at the junction of Kidbrooke Way where the old "Dover Patrol" pub used to be. The church is on the 286 bus route - a bus stop is only a few yards from the church entrance. Kidbrooke railway station is located approximately 800/1000 yards away and that is about an 8/10 minutes walk. Trusting that this information is to your requirements.
