Kennington Joseph Edward ThompsonI am looking for anyone who knew or heard of Joseph Edward Thompson who lived at 37 Lucas Road, Kennington from 1937 to 1959 at least. I know that the Brandon Estate was built on the street and surrounding area. Where were the residents rehoused? (Born 1903 His occupation was as a printer.) The family lived at 5 Smith Street, Lambeth before that from 1927. Other family names were his wife Sarah - known as Phyllis - from 1930 to 1935 when their marriage broke up. There was a daughter Josephine - same dates. Joseph's parents lived in the house = Joseph Robert Thompson who died in 1937 and Matilda Sarah who died in 1943. There is a possibility that Smith Street is Lucas Road as I believe the road name changed? Thanks. I attended Keyworth school from 1952 to 1957 and loved every minute of it. Miss Hunt was the head mistress back then. A very strict lady who didn't think twice about administering the odd slap on the leg of any miscreants. I remember Harry Morrish's sweet shop on Manor Place and agree with all the nice comments about him. I also well remember 'Jack' the ice cream man. I would love to know what happened to his beautiful, ornate hand cart with the four brass spindles. I also remember the lady in Briganza Street who kept rabbits. If you came out of the school and turned left, then left again in to Briganza Street, she was a little way down on the left, just before the sweet shop, which I think was called, 'Tooth's. Mail-me Post reply -->London Kennington Del. 6 Nov Should we remove this post ? ^ Kennington Paisley RoadWe lived on Paisley Road, my sister was Maureen Massaro. I do not know what happened to the ice cream barrow but I think they sold it before he died in Feb 1971. The directions to the rabbit lady are quite correct. Our whole family lived from East Lane to Manor Place, the Johnsons, Fishers, Harmers, Massaros and Herrings. I can't mail you back, sorry, my computer won't let me. We were very fortunate living there, I've travelled all my life and never found anywhere else that makes me feel so good. Post reply -->London Kennington 15 Mar Should we remove this post ? ^ KenningtonMicky We were obviously at the same School at, I would guess, the same time. Tanners, Teddy Bell and Charlie White certainly sound familiar. Mrs Edwards sounds familiar but I seem to think of her as a Music teacher rather than Head. I do remember a Miss Donna probably the reception Class, around 1953, she has left a lasting impression on me and I am now 63. The name is Michael Coumas and lived in Brutus Court from the time it was built (1956 I think) until 1971/2 and mother finaly vacated totally in 2009 following my father passing away in 2008. We lived in Dumain Court, just next to Brutus. Couple of things I remember ... one was when you climbed up on top of the advertising hoarding by Dante Road, trod on a rusty nail up there that went right into your foot and couldn't get down. I had to get the copper who directed traffic at Newington Butts to climb up and carry you down! And ... dunno if you want to be reminded of this, but I believe that you found a kid floating dead in the pool at Bedlam Park. You can write to me at Mail-me if you like. I'll tell Jim I've seen you on here. Also, you could have a look at the Facebook page, Kennington SE11. There's also pages for Walworth, Elephant and Castle, Camberwell, Lambeth Walk etc. Post reply -->London Kennington 15 May Should we remove this post ? Kennington |
