Kennington Distin Street/ Lollard Street

These are names I remember my mother & father in-law spoke about often. George & Emily (Emmie) Ford was Anderson. They lived in both of these and moved into a prefab in the Area. They adopted my husband who is mixed race in 1961 from a local unmarried mothers home and I have cine film of the area including Lambeth Walk and their homes at this time.

Kennington Guinness Buildings & Old Red Lion Pub

Does anyone know the history of the Guinness Buildings and the Old Red Lion pub? I live in Brisbane, Queensland and am tracing my family history. A relative lived at No.36 and 37 Guinness Buildings at the beginning of the 20th century. I am sure he would have had a drink or two in the Old Red Lion.  Mail-me

Kennington I LIVED AT 139 ETHELRED STREET!

My name: Brian Watson. My book: 'Black Jacks, Fruit Salads, Cricket Stumps On The Wall...(A 1950's Moment In time)' was published in October 2011. My book re-introduced me to the old friends I grew up with in Ethelred/Hotspur Street. Barry Gilliam contacted me via my book and that led to us getting together with Bill Slattery, in fact we met just yesterday, for lunch, ( October 2nd, 2013). If anyone else out there remembers us, please get in touch. The area around the Lambeth Walk was a wonderful place to spend your childhood, just a shame it was all ruined by that dreadful estate that sits there now. Also, if you attended Henry Fawcett School, perhaps you remember Miss Walker, Miss Evans, Mr Hunt, Miss Poole and Miss Lowery, and of course dear old Lawford Siddall, the headmaster. Please get in touch  Mail-me  There's so much to catch up on.

Hi I actually lived in Clayton Buildings until they were demolished. I lived on the top floor at number 19.
My mother was then moved as part compulsory purchase into Lambeth Walk.
In some pictures that are out there in the big wide world it shows an advertising hoarding (taken from Kennington Road), However there used to be a row of houses where they are.

Kennington Joseph Edward Thompson

I am looking for anyone who knew or heard of Joseph Edward Thompson who lived at 37 Lucas Road, Kennington from 1937 to 1959 at least. I know that the Brandon Estate was built on the street and surrounding area. Where were the residents rehoused? (Born 1903 His occupation was as a printer.) The family lived at 5 Smith Street, Lambeth before that from 1927. Other family names were his wife Sarah - known as Phyllis - from 1930 to 1935 when their marriage broke up. There was a daughter Josephine - same dates. Joseph's parents lived in the house = Joseph Robert Thompson who died in 1937 and Matilda Sarah who died in 1943. There is a possibility that Smith Street is Lucas Road as I believe the road name changed? Thanks. Plse contact:  Mail-me

Kennington

Hi,
Although I've occasionally posted on the 'Walworth' site, I've only just discovered this one.
I attended Keyworth school from 1952 to 1957 and loved every minute of it. Miss Hunt was the head mistress back then. A very strict lady who didn't think twice about administering the odd slap on the leg of any miscreants.
I remember Harry Morrish's sweet shop on Manor Place and agree with all the nice comments about him.
I also well remember 'Jack' the ice cream man. I would love to know what happened to his beautiful, ornate hand cart with the four brass spindles.
I also remember the lady in Briganza Street who kept rabbits. If you came out of the school and turned left, then left again in to Briganza Street, she was a little way down on the left, just before the sweet shop, which I think was called, 'Tooth's.

Kennington Paisley Road

We lived on Paisley Road, my sister was Maureen Massaro. I do not know what happened to the ice cream barrow but I think they sold it before he died in Feb 1971. The directions to the rabbit lady are quite correct. Our whole family lived from East Lane to Manor Place, the Johnsons, Fishers, Harmers, Massaros and Herrings. I can't mail you back, sorry, my computer won't let me. We were very fortunate living there, I've travelled all my life and never found anywhere else that makes me feel so good. Sandra Fisher

Hi, I can also remember Keyworth School very well. Attended between 56 -60. Remember Ms Hunt. I remember being in Ms Archers class who I fell in love with! I also went into Ms Armstrong class and Mr Binden. I remember going to dinner across the road. also remember Tooths and shepherds the green grocer next door with the man with one leg! I also remember Dave’s at the end of Faunce street where I worked for pocket money. Very fond memories. I visited the Walworth Road a few week ago. Such a shame - devastated.
I remember the Ice cream man being outside Manor place baths after swimming in 2nd class! and the chip shop across the road were you were unable to buy chips without fish!
Lovely memories......

i have just found this site and i thought i may be able to bring back some memories of people and places in kennington where i was bought up as a young lad.born in 1942 i played like many others in the bombed houses in the lambeth walk area,i lived in wedgewood house, with my parents, margret and joe robertson and myself david, and sisters Joan Maureen and Pamela, the fish and chip shop in the then china walk was the greengate fisheries i believe,as you went and along into lambeth walk there was a sweet shop called berts, then the old bombed out baths, next to the entrance to wedgewood house on the right was a few shops,a snobs, amy sands green grocers who also had another shop further down the walk, the walk forked off to the left,to the right was clarence place also all bombed buildings which led to where a passport to pimlico was filmed. The houses still standing on the left were all terraced, right up to the pub The French Horn, still standing i believe this was on the corner of where i first
