Kennington I was born in Lucas road in 1954.

We were rehoused in Camberwell in late 1957. The houses were demolished shortly after under the title slum clearance.

Hi,
Although I've occasionally posted on the 'Walworth' site, I've only just discovered this one.
I attended Keyworth school from 1952 to 1957 and loved every minute of it. Miss Hunt was the head mistress back then. A very strict lady who didn't think twice about administering the odd slap on the leg of any miscreants.
I remember Harry Morrish's sweet shop on Manor Place and agree with all the nice comments about him.
I also well remember 'Jack' the ice cream man. I would love to know what happened to his beautiful, ornate hand cart with the four brass spindles.
I also remember the lady in Briganza Street who kept rabbits. If you came out of the school and turned left, then left again in to Briganza Street, she was a little way down on the left, just before the sweet shop, which I think was called, 'Tooth's.

Kennington Paisley Road

We lived on Paisley Road, my sister was Maureen Massaro. I do not know what happened to the ice cream barrow but I think they sold it before he died in Feb 1971. The directions to the rabbit lady are quite correct. Our whole family lived from East Lane to Manor Place, the Johnsons, Fishers, Harmers, Massaros and Herrings. I can't mail you back, sorry, my computer won't let me. We were very fortunate living there, I've travelled all my life and never found anywhere else that makes me feel so good. Sandra Fisher

Hi, I can also remember Keyworth School very well. Attended between 56 -60. Remember Ms Hunt. I remember being in Ms Archers class who I fell in love with! I also went into Ms Armstrong class and Mr Binden. I remember going to dinner across the road. also remember Tooths and shepherds the green grocer next door with the man with one leg! I also remember Dave’s at the end of Faunce street where I worked for pocket money. Very fond memories. I visited the Walworth Road a few week ago. Such a shame - devastated.
I remember the Ice cream man being outside Manor place baths after swimming in 2nd class! and the chip shop across the road were you were unable to buy chips without fish!
Lovely memories......

i have just found this site and i thought i may be able to bring back some memories of people and places in kennington where i was bought up as a young lad.born in 1942 i played like many others in the bombed houses in the lambeth walk area,i lived in wedgewood house, with my parents, margret and joe robertson and myself david, and sisters Joan Maureen and Pamela, the fish and chip shop in the then china walk was the greengate fisheries i believe,as you went and along into lambeth walk there was a sweet shop called berts, then the old bombed out baths, next to the entrance to wedgewood house on the right was a few shops,a snobs, amy sands green grocers who also had another shop further down the walk, the walk forked off to the left,to the right was clarence place also all bombed buildings which led to where a passport to pimlico was filmed. The houses still standing on the left were all terraced, right up to the pub The French Horn, still standing i believe this was on the corner of where i first

Kennington Does anyone remember?

We lived at No 2 Paisley Road, my Mother was a Massaro. My Greatgrandfather was known locally as Jack but was an Italian who sold ice cream from a barrow around Manor Place etc. I loved Morris's Sweet Shop on Manor Place. He was the nicest person and I often wondered whatever became of him. My sister was Maureen Massaro and we are related to the Johnsons and Harmers of East Lane. I started school at Keyworth in 1956. Did anyone else? Am seeking my cousin Rosa Wilkinson - last heard of in Peckham - would be about 61 now.

Kennington Paisley Road boy

Hi,
I was born in No 1 Paisley Road in 1952. We moved to Marsland Rd soon after when I was about 3. I went to St Paul's School. Didn't like it there and was moved to Keyworth. I remember Jack the Ice Cream man. I loved the Pink water ice he sold. I can still remember the shops in Manor Place Terrace; Morrish's sweet shop, Yabsley's the boot mender, Fudge's the Chemist and Mr Jones who ran the diary. I can also remember Carter's the newsagents. I go back now and then for Pie and Mash and a sarsaparilla in Baldwins. Happy days.

Micky
We were obviously at the same School at, I would guess, the same time. Tanners, Teddy Bell and Charlie White certainly sound familiar. Mrs Edwards sounds familiar but I seem to think of her as a Music teacher rather than Head. I do remember a Miss Donna probably the reception Class, around 1953, she has left a lasting impression on me and I am now 63. The name is Michael Coumas and lived in Brutus Court from the time it was built (1956 I think) until 1971/2 and mother finaly vacated totally in 2009 following my father passing away in 2008.
