My greatgrandfather, John Clark, was licensee of this pub in the 1880s. My grandmother was born there. Are there any pictures of the place? Be interested to see them.

Kennington De Laune Street

I lived in De Laune Street from 1947 to 1973. Went to Henry Fawcett School and then Archbishop Tenison's at the Oval. Nothing but great memories even though we didn't have a bathroom (went to the publc baths in Lambeth Walk - a great experience), and our playgrounds were bombsites (the site of the old Kennington Theatre, which was hit during the war.)
I too remember going down to Bob White's (great to hear from the Whie family, by the way) and also to that little pub in Cleaver Square - the Prince of Wales - where we had some great evenings in the early 60s.

Was your School Stockwell Manor rather than Kennington Manor or is my memory too far faded into the mists of time. Like you, looking back, everyone was I guess desperatly poor but I would suggest honourable, ethical with a very strong sense of community and values seemingly lost today. And like you mention our childhoods were full, happy and carefree. I try to promote that into my grandchildren today, all children deserve the fun we had.
I only mention Stockwell Manor as a good friend of mine at the time, Alan Willoughby, went there and I am told he became an airline captain and I the opposite, a mixed gas diving superintendent - both opposite ends of the planet. Very strange.
All the best to you and yours.

I was born in Lambeth Hospital on 25/2/1940, I lived at 19 Courtenay street Kennington , S.E 11.
My name is Michael Henry Turner, I'm 73 in February. I went to Henry Fawcet infants school and I too remember Miss Lane and Mr Folwel ( if that's the right way of spelling it ) also the head master was a Mr Jeramiha. I think I started there when I was 5 in the nursery class.
I was very interested in model aeroplanes when I was 9 and I used to buy models from a model/toy shop in Micklejohns in the Lambeth walk. Bob Whites was where my mother and father used to get our sea food stuff from foe Sunday tea. I am retired now and live in Brixham, Devon. e-mail address:  Mail-me

Kennington St Philips Demolished Church - Reedworth Road

Have lived in Lollard street for 16yrs now and recently saw the film S.W.A.L.K aka MELODY at the Media tech room BFI...starring Mark Lester! It opens with a slow shot panning back from the Houses of Parliament, where you can spot the old terrace houses and the church before it moves to the next shot of Kennington Cross Boy brigade marching!

Does anyone have photos/stories or maybe website info that I could research....for years I looked at vestry building beside the demolished church and didn't have a clue it was a vestry..........would be good to see photographs of interior and reason why it was demolished!

THANK YOU!

Hello Norm,
I attended Hackford Road Secondary School from September 1960, until about April 1964. The only teacher I seem to recall is Rudolp Massara, who taught french.
