Hampstead Country Club Saturday Disco 1968! Haverstick Hill.

If this is the same place we used to go to disco/ club on saturday nights! Pop and Motown - soft drinks only - a great time had by all. We also used to call it Caesars! We were all rather trendy mods I suppose. Great memories of the place. We used to drink cider before we went in. The same people used to go every week .We also did the rounds of all the other little clubs around north London i.e. Birdsnest - Marquee -con club north finchley. Wot a larf!  Mail-me

Hampstead Haverstock Hill Country Club

It's now the Globe Lawn Tennis Club, 190a Haverstock Hill just up the hill on the right from Belsize Park Tube. Not sure if it's the same building though. It was a venue for bands in the late 60's and early 70's. I saw Hendrix play there in Jan 1967.

Hampstead Haverstock Hill Country Club

The Country Club was somewhere down an alley on the north-east side of Haverstock Hill. There's a block of flats called Allingham Court just north of Belsize Park tube, and the alley is just the other side of them. Where a housing development called Aspern Grove is there used to be a tennis club and overgrown waste land in the sixties, and it must have been somewhere there. I see there's still a tennis court. I think there used to be a sign for the club on the entrance to the alley (or it may have been for Caesar's which I think was an earlier or later name for it). I lived in the block of flats then but was a bit too young to know the club and in fact I never identified a building large enough to have been a club. Wherever it was, I suspect it's now under the new housing.  Mail-me

Hampstead Haverstock Hill Country Club

I remember seeing Elton John play there in about 1969/70, particularly a great version of 'Burn Down The Mission' (Tumbleweed Connection album).

Hampstead Hampstead Country Club/Iroko

It's location has been identified by others. I played there with my band, Woodfog, in the early 70s...we also rehearsed there thanks to Ginger Johnson. One night we were on the same bill as Osibisa. It was like a bit of countryside behind Belsize Park Stn...a mixture of wasteland and Country Club/Tennis club and the Iroko which also hosted some famous musicians. It seemed like it was always a hot summer back then! It's a pity it still isn't there but nowadays I doubt it would have the same chilled-out, peace & love vibe that we enjoyed in the late 60s/early 70s.

Hampstead Iroko or Iroquo Club as was.....

Out of Belsize Park tube, turn right along the pavement, cut through the alley after the end of the shops towards the tennis club and there it was.
At one time in the 70's it was home to Ginger Johnson's Iroko Country Club, where a lot of local musos would go to jam on Saturdays.
Phil Lynott and Brian Downey spent most of May/June '74 there auditioning for guitar players and jamming with anyone who came along.
Happy days.....

Hampstead COUNTRY CLUB 1968 HAVERSTOCK HILL

I used to go here with my friends. i remember a curtain at the back somewhere where couples used to go and sit at tables and get up to naughties!! I remember a group of regular mods there every weekend, some of who's names I remember. Would love to get in touch with a few of them but can't find them through facebook. Had great times there every weekend. Always a queue at the door. Best times. We also went to Birdland in Jermyn Street and Birds Nest, Marquee etc.

Hampstead Elton John at the Country Club

You are quite right... it was 3 July 1970, only about six weeks before he triumphed at The LA Troubadour - the rest - as they - is history! The gig was notable - as you note - for a killer version of "Burn Down The Mission"; but I also recall (hard to imagine now) that he ran out of songs so played for a good three quarters of an hour extra playing Jerry Lee Lewis material.

Hampstead Iroko Country club 74 - spot on..

Funny to spot these postings.
My dad was the late Ginger Johnson and I remember May/June of 74' making cups of tea for Phil & Brian and the countless hoards of guitar palyers comming through the doors.
I passed by a couple of years ago and the site been demolished and converted to appartments

A great time and place to hang out as a kid..
