I'm still a little nervous because of the area and all the stories you hear but opinions are so mixed it's quite confusing! There's also a few things we'd like to look into like local markets, gyms and events by/with the community any advice, help and suggestions would be gratefully received. thanks. And I just watched a video made by newsnight (see their website) about the "manor house boys" and loads of kids who hang around doing gang things. I'm a bit scared now I had no idea---- and I dont have a nice husband to protect me either! I was hoping to commute in and out of central london by manor house tube-- but it looks like thats not a safe option late at night. Are there any hackney residents who can offer some words of comfort?? Was newsnight being OTT? YOU JUST HAVE TO BE SENSIBLEI have worked in Hackney (Mare Street) for the past 35 years and my feeling is that this area has changed very much for the better ... particularly over the past 5 years or so. There has been so much money spent during recent years on improving the area ... building new properties and vastly improving a lot of the council estates ... and also on making the parks (Victoria Park / London Fields / Hackney Downs etc) much safer places to be. Also there seems to have been an influx of many more young professional people and artists / photographers / media people setting up home in Hackney that seems to have prompted the opening of some quite good little restaurants, cafés and bars in the area. So long as you don't go wandering around the streets of Hackney late at night or very early in the morning ... or dress too provocatively or make too ostentatious a display of your wealth (i.e. park your ferrari and your porsche outside your flat !) then you should be fine.  | ^ Hackney Im moving to Hackney too....It is largely OTT Ive lived in hackney all of my life, and i work for the local council. Hackney isnt different from any other borough. It has crime yes, but then so does K&C. You walk around at 2am in the morning anywhere there is an increased risk of crime. Its a great borough, which is also doing loads every year to improve. During my 2.5 years there I had a mobile phone taken from me while on the bus, that was it. Make yourself aware of the areas not to go into, and don't go there. Keep your whits about you and you will find Hackney is agreat place to live!! My granmother had the names Isaacs and Levy in her family history and I believe her mother might have been an Annie Levy....from Lithuania. Hackney is the first and only place I have lived in, so I don't have anyother part of london to compare it too. I like it and although I know its not the best place to be living I don't think its the worst. I feel at home here, its friendly and has a community warmth about it. There are great markets and a good bus service. I belive in what one of the writes wrote. If your not in the circle of drugs and guns, then its only muggins and so you have to be wary of.
