East Ham sobietskiuogos@yahoo.co.ukEast Ham American moving to London, staying in East HamHello. I am an American citizen relocating to London soon, and will be temporarily staying with the family of one of my coworkers that lives in East Ham. I've been reading a lot of mixed things about the area, and generally speaking have heard that the borough of Newham is horribly ghetto. The house I'm staying in appears to be a few blocks from the Upton Park tube station. In addition to being American, I'm also white.. which I know will probably make me stand out like a sore thumb... but I would consider myself relatively street smart as I am well traveled and have lived in several major cities around the US. Anyways, can anyone tell me about what to expect from living in this area? Post reply -->London East Ham menace2mpls 14 Nov ^ East Ham YOUR BE OK^ East Ham USA to East Ham is a good journeyI and my family are white with acquintainces and neighbours of various stripes. It is a good place to live and bring up kids. The external reporting is generally by people who do not live and engage here. I have lived in Nashville and now enjoy East Ham. It is vibrant and amazingly tolerant of all. I have American friends who live in the borough too who love it and are birning up thier sopns here.Fear not! Engage and be in touch. The girls were based in Dagenham through the 1940s and 50s. The troupe was run by three sisters named Pat, Sheila and Maureen Murphy. I have a list of some of the names of the dancers as follows: Rene & Rosie (cousins), Eileen Bates, Patty Pearce, Mary Vary, Rene Cutmore, Queenie Butler, Sheila Payne, Betty Howes and Violet (Vi) Shaves. If anyone has any information (no matter how small) about the Windorettes please post a reply. They played at many Theatres, East Ham Palace Theatre being a regular venue for them, they also entertained civilians in air raid shelters during the blitz. Thanks for any help, Dan James. please reply to Mail-me Post reply -->London East Ham Dan James 26 Mar ^ East HamMy grandmother was a Windsorette, and could very well be one of those names from your list. I'm not sure of her surname prior to marriage (pre 1950), but certainly one of those first names is correct. I bet you have had lots of response regarding the Windsorettes. My own connections were very minimal as I was very young when they were going strong. My little contribution here is that I lived at No.30 Vincent Road, and of course the Murphy's were at No 22 and the very top of our banjo. Mr and Mrs were Catholics and so I believe were the family. Mr had a stall outside his house most days, and as kids we used to buy 'off the ration' sherbet and licquorish and other stuff to spend our pennies on. This barrow type stall was waited on by any of the family and then in the evenings, one could still call at the house and find all the stuff paraded on the stairs just inside the door. They were life savers and many a gas mantle was provided by them for tuppence or so and other bits of stuff too not just confectionery! Mrs would invariably answer the door and us kids would spend literally pennies on adventures by buying up to two woodbines from a packet of five from the doorstep s Post reply -->London East Ham 25 Oct |
