Clapton How safe is Clapton ???

I am considering buying a very nice three bedroom flat on Narford Road (E5) with my girlfriend. However, I am worried about the safety of this particular area, and I obviously know that some areas of Clapton can be quite dangerous (as people have commented on this site). Narford Road seemed quiet and tranquil in the daytime but I have not visited it in the evening. Also, how safe would it be walking home from the train station (either Rectory Road or Stoke Newington) in the evening ? My instinct is telling me to avoid buying here because of Clapton's reputation. However, I really like the flat. I would be grateful for some sensible advice. Thanks.

Clapton Clapton safety

I'm a 28 year old female and i've rented a room in clapton for the last 2 years. i live on evering road - not sure exactly where the road you mention is but they're both E5. Anyway, at first i did feel scared here but i have never encountered any problems at all. i don't walk around late at night but i wouldn't do that anywhere other than the city centre to be honest. Generally, it is really quiet in Clapton, much more so than Hackney Mare St or Dalston. I wouldn't let it put you off purchasing a house here. I've just bought a flat in bethnal green [ex-council] and i'm experiencing the same worries about crime. If i could buy the lovely flat i live in now i definitely would!

Clapton It

Hi there,
I'm a 33yo woman who has lived in Clapton for 5 years and never had any problems. I walk around at night on my own frequently. You shouldn't have to restrict your freedom because of a fear of being attacked.. But I'd just suggest sticking to well-lit parts, keeping your head held high and if you're in any doubt about someone, cross the road.  Mail-me

Clapton New friends

Hi,
I've been living in Clapton for a few months now because i found a nice, cheap place to live. However, I haven't gone out much around the area and find myself out in the city where i work, then going home to sleep. I am a 24 year old male and enjoy bars and pubs and, socialising generally i suppose. So if anyone is in the same boat, or just fancies a drink with someone new, email me!

Where in Lower Clapton Road was this pub?
As the only pub of this name that I can remember was in Clapton Way.
I have a photo of this one taken before it's demolition in the late 60's.

Clapton LORD CLYDE - CLAPHAM WAY

Would JRS who said that their parents had the Lord Clyde in Clapham Way till 1958 let me know if they are any relation to, or know of an Andrew Dempster (a Scotsman). He is listed in the London phone book in 1944 with this pub's address. He is my great uncle and I would love to know if he had any descendants that I could try to trace. Any help or clues would be appreciated.

Clapton The Lord Clyde Clapton Way

Sorry MLH, we are not related to Andrew Dempster and have never heard of him. Please note that the Lord Clyde that I am refering to was in Clapton Way not Clapham. If you do come across any info on this public house I would be very pleased to share it with you.
Best wishes
JRS

Clapton Is Clapton really that dodgy?

Hi All

I'm also a single female looking to buy around the Clapton area. Is this a bad idea, am I going to get mugged walking home at night?

Any info much appreciated before I make an irreversible decision!

Clapton re: Is Clapton really that dodgy?

I like Clapton. Most crime is drug-related and doesnt concern the everyday person on the street. There are some beautiful victorian houses in very safe middle-class areas. There is a big muslim community around Clapton and so this makes for a quite quiet and law-abiding neighbourhood. Also, property is going to be worth more as we get closer to 2012 so I think it's a good investment.

Of course crime is a worry but I think it's just a matter of being safe, as it is in any area: making sure your house is secure and not walking around at the dead of night through dangerous alleys and parks. I personally, as a young female living in clapton, feel more safe here than in suburban areas as there are always people on the well-lit and busy streets and shops close late so you never feel that there is nobody around to help if you're in trouble. Also I think the liberal and bustling multi-cultural community is a good place to live, work and eventually raise children.

Hope this

Clapton Is Clapton really that dodgy?

I lived in Upper Clapton Road for around 6 months and didn't really like being starred at - I'm quite fair and most of the locals aren't! An older friend of mine lived for several years in Lower Clapton on Elderfield Road close to a school and she thought the area was really nice, even though she was occasionally mollested when jogging in the local park!
All in all I didn't feel too comfortable there, but I did consider going back there for financial reasons - it's not that bad if you keep your head down and I did make a lot af good friends with Indian, Polish and Croation neighbours. Plus there's a great chinese take away on the roundabout! I was the only single white female on the block and I would say that had it's pluses and minuses! If you can afford to buy there, do it and make sure you get good locks on all your doors and windows. You can always sell when the price of your house has quadruppled in a couple of years time :-)

Clapton Clapton Muggings

You have as much chance of being mugged at night as during the day, as happened to my wife one lunchtime several years ago.
We moved out to Lincolnshire and love the tranquill village life here.
Can highly recomend it.

Clapton sorry to burst your bubble

Sorry to burst your bubble James but Murder Mile is from just before Clapton Pond to Upper Claptonl It is known by that name because of a series of murders that took place over ten years ago now around the night club that used to be opposite Clapton Pond itself and NOT Homerton High Street as you mistakenly report.

i do think clapton is a violent place but is also a nice place to be especially in the summer. if people do think clapton is too dangerous to hang out at night times then they should stay in. because no one has faulsed them to stay out at night especially the youngsta's out there. im reppin E.5 4lyf, Clapton is a lovely area, but too much littering!!! Mail-me
