Post reply -->London Chelsea Mike 23 Oct Chelsea Lots Road Power Station 1936I am tracing family history and my great grandfather Charles Seymour Jones worked at Lots Road, fatally injured in an accident 17th December 1935, taken to St. Stephens Hospital and died 6th Jan 1936. He was 64. I am having trouble finding out more about this and his family. My mum has a certificate from the London Transport Board on her wall saying he 'retired' on 6th Jan 1936 - which we know is incorrect as I have his death certificate etc. I come across random things on the internet every now and again and take a chance that someone can help with this piece of my history! Can anyone direct me to who may help? Thanks in anticipation. I am going back to the 50s. Is the block of flats that was Holbein house still there or what has it become. Please does anyone know or have any recollection at all? Post reply -->London Chelsea mhammon5@ford.com 3 Jan ^ Chelsea Holbein House is still there, at the junction of Holbein Place and Pimlico Road (my parents live there).^ Chelsea I lived at 76 for a whileyes indeed. The flats are still there. I lived at number 76 for a few years with a very dear friend of mine. That was in the seventies, but I can assure you that the block still stands. While I cannot remember your dear great aunts, they may have been near neighbours and my friend would certainly have known them I think. The flats have been taken over by a housing association and although I have not visited for some years, I still keep in touch with some friends who have been there for the best part of four decades. If you plan a nostalgic visit, you will find them easily enough (the flats, not my friends). Post reply -->London Chelsea 6 Jun ^ Chelsea Holbein HouseI don't know when exactly you posted your enquiry, but I've only just seen it, so I hope you get to read this. My husband and I lived in Holbein House from 1961-64 and I think our flat no. was 72. There were two sisters living next door, but I simply can't remember their names, so can't be sure if theirs were the names you've given. They were probably in their 50's or 60's when we knew them and all I can really remember, apart from the fact that they were really sweet, was that they used to receive gifts of honey from relatives in Australia. So if you have, or had, family there, then I'm probably on the right track. The other thing I remember about them was that I went with them and my baby son to Oxford Street one Christmas, to see the lights, and they gave him a small white teddy bear, which we still have! Unfortunately, we lost touch with them when we moved from Holbein House. Post reply -->London Chelsea Maureen Brooke 20 Sep ^ Chelsea^ ChelseaDear Maureen Brooke What a delight your email was. Yes the two sisters you knew were in fact my two Great Aunts. Ruth and Maud Bedingham. I am still in touch with those Australian relatives. They were lovely much loved and very kind ladies. They never married having both lost fiances in the first world war. They moved to Worthing around 1964 or 5 but I am not sure exactly what year they left Sloane Square. They both lived to over ninety. I have since visited Holbein House but sadly could not get in the outer gates as I would have liked just to climb up those stairs to the door of 74. Thank you for writing. I think you know how much your email means to me.
