Canning Town Titchen Bros. Metal Merchants

My Grand-dad owned "Titchen Bros." Metal Merchants at 81, 82 and 83 Stevenson Street. His sons, Charlie, Frank and George worked with him. Grand-dad, Grand-ma and their eleven kids lived in East Ham. I remember visiting "the firm" when I was little and being allowed to play with the big brass scale.

Canning Town seeking family photos

my father was orphaned in the Blitz and we are trying to find any information on his relatives. his father was William John Haylock and they lived in Crediton Road. He was killed on the 19 March 1941 in Rochester Avenue. We believe he worked as a lighterman on the Royal Dock. His wife was called Myrtle Edna and they married in 1939.

Canning Town

Hi, I am trying to find information of a family member. A Valerie May Wade in or around the Colchester/London area for connections. This name is my Grandmother. My mother was born 20th April 1953 and named Avril Mae and was adopted with a change of name thereafter. Family tales suggested this lady was fairly young at the time possibly 16-19 years of age but i can not confirm. Adopted parents of Avril came from Barking and solicitors used was in Maryland. I'm just curious of my past and family history. Any help gratefully received should this post be of interest or knowledge to anyone 07967102576

Canning Town BARON ROAD

I was born in Baron Road at No. 63. I lived there for 24 years. It was much the same as all the other streets in the area. The street was our playground and we had many street parties on special occassions. I can still remember a lot of our neighbours

Canning Town Pretoria Road School- Now Eastlea

Hi I'm The Current Vice Principal at Eastlea community school and I'm very interested in researching the history of Pretoria boys and girls secondary school, how the buildings were organised, reminisces about the school and what happened when Hilda road school was amalgamated to Pretoria (1963?) Does any one remember when it became Eastlea Community school?
Unfortunately we've lost a lot of history and need to get it back before it disappears for ever!

Canning Town Pretoria Road School- Now Eastlea

Hi Chris, I stumbled across the Pretoria School website almost by accident. In reading your post I feel sure that I can help you fill in quite a lot of the gaps. I started there in about May/June 1943 and my Sister a few years younger also went to the girls section. i can remember a lot of the building's layout and some of the original teachers. Tell me in what sequence you would like to answer your queries and I will do my best to help. My email address is  Mail-me

Canning Town Dale Rd

My name is Bruce Stevens. Born and brought up in Plaistow. Went to New City Rd Primary School and SWHT ( 1953 ) The latter had several teachers that would qualify as sadists even then. Not a good time apart from the football team. It was a great side.

Mums name was Daisy Proud and parents had a retail/wholesale grocers in Dale Rd ( circa 1914 + ) . Now long gone.Brother Frank and two sisters Eva and May.

Father sold the business from under them and ran off. Mother, Daisy and May had to work in Keillers in Silvertown. Hard times.

Visited a few years ago. Sadly unrecognisable. It was once a typical East End community where people looked out for each other.

Any memories anyone ?

Canning Town Poyser Family Canning Town

My Poysers were present in Canning Town for over 150 years, showing on Wilberforce Street and Forty Acre Lane for many years in the 19th and early 20th century. Then I have Sarah Street, Boyd Rd, Florence Street and others. Again though, Rathbone Street figures strongly in my early 20th century family history.

Samuel Poyser is my great grandfather and he apparently was a wheelwright who worked out of a "yard" off of Fox Street. Apparently, he made the wheels for the costers barrows, which were stored in the yard overnights. The yard was rented from a lady named Rachel Lee, who had a daughter, Clara, who worked the market.

Sam's sister, Minnie, worked in Wicks shop.

I would love to see photos of Sam's wheelright "yard", also of Wicks, and any photos of "his" Poyser siblings.

I'd also love to contact descendants of Sam's siblings, and his other children.

Canning Town Hunt family Canning Town

I know this is a long shot. 1912 Kelly's directory shows my great-great-grandfather having a "bird shop" at 1 Rathbone Street. Prior to that he had lived on Sabberton Street and this was probably where the "shop" began.

I'd love to see pics of Charles Hunt's shop on Rathbone Street when it was open.

My great grandmother was his daughter Mary Ann, known as Polly, who died in 1936.

I would love to have contact with anyone related to the family, memories or photos.

Canning Town False memories

I love Custom House and Canning Town and had a great childhood growing up there in the 70s and 80s and would not change a thing about my childhood,But the truth is there has been a glamorising of violence by a certain few people and if you said anything about being used as a punchbag by a failed Boxer or did not want your kids hanging around with drug dealers or nicking things then you was a wrongun ,well the truth is the dealers in drugs,The champion boxers of Canning Town and the people who think that it is ok to nick from what are only really poor people have been the ruin of the area and that is why everyone has really left,Every pub shut down and i think that the front page of the Newham Recorder showing an old girl of 86 pushing the button to bulldose her flat was an insult ,Was she left in so much of a dump that she was happy to push the button? A social engineering master class,And now you have gone you could not buy a flat for under £250.000 up,Read Sir John Betjamin "They pul
