Bow Where are all the pubs?

I hope to be moving to Bow this summer, I have as yet to exchange on my flat in Bow Quarter. But where are all the pubs? I have heard/read that a lot of pubs have closed in the neighbourhood. In particular two on Fairfield Road closed in the late 1990s, one has been converted into flats, not sure what's happening to the other, but there's lots of scaffolding up around it. I guess there is the Little Driver and Bow Bells on Bow Road, but at that end (as opposed to the Mile End end) there is little else. Are people happy with the choice in Bow? Could Bow handle a non-pretentious, neighbourly gastropub (I'm thinking along the lines of something like the Garrison on Bermondsey St. if anyone's ever been)?

Bow pubs in bow

I agree, I have been waiting for the bells to go up for sale so I can buy it for this purpose! There is the kings arms down by the costcutter, thats good for boozing in. As for nice places...er...bow is lacking,. I went past one on coborn rd which looks like its had a snazzy refurb, cant remember the name though. There is another more established and quite nice boozer on Coborn Rd & the food is supposed to be nice. There is the fat cat cafe bar- (food great service crap )at the junction of grove rd and roman rd. The sell off of pubs to make flats is horrendous, so if you are in the market for creating something then let me know- I'll booze there..and Im going to be in the Bow Connection. Hang on isnt there a bar in the bow quarter? Not been though?

Bow

there is the crown, an organic pub on the cnr of Grove rd and Old Ford rd opp. victoria park plus the pub on Coborn rd may be the Morgan arms, both have a restaurant, while the Crowns is bigger and specialised ie organic. I haven't been to eat so don't know about the quality of food but the Crown is spacious and not a noisy but laid back pub. there is a bjb? pub over on the hackney side of the park in the 'village' which specialises in pizza and has a big screen for sports. On approach rd there is an older pub. can't remember the name, with an art gallery above, but not as 'gentrified' as the crown or morgan arms.

Bow Where are all the pubs?

I live in Bow (off Roman Road) and most of the pubs that have closed round here have done so because they have been forced out of business by the popular Weatherspoons (smaller pubs just cannot offer booze at the same lower prices). We have one in Roman Road and there is one also in Stepney and another in Bethnal Green. They are usually teaming with people because of the fact they are cheap and you can get decent (ish) food very cheap.

PS. I am a single female of petite build and have lived in Bow for 20 years (born in Bethnal Green) and have never felt threatened. Its a question of knowing your area I think and knowing which roads not to go down. Keep to the busy roads if you can. I have felt a lot less safe in other areas but have put that down to the fact I don't know the area as well as my own patch.

Bow Approach Road

The pub in Approach Road is actually called the Approach - presumably so called as it is on the Approach to Victoria Park? It's a nice friendly local and also does food, although we've never eaten there. They also have seating outside with removable canopies and those portable gas heater things for cooler evenings. A bit of a trek from some parts of Bow, but possibly worth it - and the 8 and D6 buses go fairly close (alight at the Buddhist Centre and walk up Globe Road).

Bow pubs in bow

There is a place to drink in the bow quarter (its more of a bar than traditional pub), and it also does a great selection of curries (Don't rush to have the bangers and mash though).
Bow could really do with a nice bar to drink in however- especially something by DLR or Tube station.

Bow Badminton Courts

Found one! Yes, there is a sports centre with a Badminton Court, Whitechapel Sports Centre, just by Whitechapel tube. Seems a bit expensive and dificult to book - if you don't buy a privelege card you have to go in person to book. Anyway, at least we have found one now. Thanks!

Bow Bow wasnt that great for me

I'm only expressing a personal opinion here, and I hope that's OK. But as an area it lacks focus: there's no clear town centre, it has no trees and there is no vibrant sense of community atall. Although it is closeish to the centre of London, it felt like a dormitary town when I lived there: it serves that purpose in the sense that it is convenient for Docklands and the City, but it reflects that: it is just convenient.

Bow Actually it WAS OK for me !

And I don't live there anymore, so I don't mind talking about it. It has great transport links for City and Docklands. Its skyline differs from most of London with low-level buildings and expansive skies, and I liked that difference. It doesn't suffer from rows and rows of tightly packed Victorian streets. It did become overheated in the rental market up until 2002, but I know from friends that renting, like elsewhere has become a buyers market. I've bought now, and I wouldn't recommend buying in Docklands presently because I think it is about to take a fall, but for renting: haggle like hell and you could land yourself a well positioned bargain. Depends what you want really.

Bow I dont agree with the above!

I live in Bow, and there are lots of trees! Most streets have got a few on them, and there is Mile End Park and Victoria Park (with deer!) on your doorstep. There are some great pubs - sitting outside on the canal with a beer is lovely, and it's so easy to get into the city, that you are never short of things to do!!

Bow I totally dont agree either!!

Every place has its bad and good parts, but some parts of Bow deffinately are lovely...with pretty tree line streets. Our victorian terrace house is close to Mile end tube, on the central, circle, district, hammersmith and city lines and the N8 bus goes all over the place. There is also a buzzing atmosphere in the East End
