Post or Ask something here in 'Bermondsey' BermondseyMyself and a local historian friend have been making films on local history. So far, between us we have completed films on pie-mash, Surrey Docks, Tooley Street, and the area along the river from Tower Bridge to The Angel, with several more planned. We have been having regular screenings in the area lately and have more to come. It would be great if I could use people's real family photos of the streets of Bermondsey & Rotherhithe. If any good photos could be emailed to me, those used would get a credit in the film, and they will eventually go down as part of the area's history instead of being stuck in a cupboard. I also write for the Southwark News and could be contacted there. I have recently come across a book called Walking my Walworth, it's about a young girl living in Walworth during the sixties, it gives a real insight into the area etc for anyone that might be interested. Post reply -->London Bermondsey Sue 3 May Bermondsey 64 Cranham Road - 1915Hi, I am enjoying the process of tracing my family history. I know that my grandmother, Doris Cordelia Bryan, was born at the above address. Her mother's name was Caroline Bryan. Her grandparents and owners/renters' of the house were Annie and James Bryan. I have two questions 1.Last week I suddenly found myself in England (I live in Canada) for the very first time and wandered the neighbourhood searching for her birth house. I discovered the house and street no longer exist. I would be interested to know if anyone could point out where it USED to exist. 2. My grandmother's "biological" father's name was Sidney Francis Kershaw. My great-grandmother and grandmother came to Canada in 1916. My guess is that single motherhood was a different story back then. I'm trying to make any connection to a relation of Sidney Kershaw if at all possible. Bermondsey 25 and 69 Grange WalkHi, both my grand parents lived in Grange Walk at the end of the 1800's. I live in the North and have only been able to visit Grange Walk once when I took a few photos but sadly the house numbers do not show up. I believe that number 69 is no longer there - can anyone confirm that please? Also, is there any chance that some kind person could take a photo of number 25 if it's still there? My. gr. grandmother died there in 1899 when she was just 46 having bought up at least 8 children there. Imagine what life was like in a 2 up and 2 down with all those little ones! Reminds me of The Old Woman that lived in a Shoe! lol. Thanks so much for reading this. A part of me belongs to Bermondsey! They married at St Judes Church and owned Jims Dining rooms, which was near Stainer Street Arch. They died together in the Blitz in Stainer St Arch Febraury 17th 1941, when I was six. Does anyone remember the jeweller, who was a friend of my mother? He made me a watch and sent it in a little red box. Matha Parsons was my grandmother. She was a general dealer in Drury Lane. My mother Maryann was called Polly. She had bright blonde hair and did all the cooking in the shop. I would love some help with this. I cannot find her date of birth and have tried all of the obvious avenues. She died aged 29 but we have not got her date of birth. Thank you so much for reading this. I believe it was in Bermondsey (we lived in Cherry Garden Street around this time) and the pub was I think owned by Messrs Balsam and Elliott who decided to sell up. It was frequented by lots of dockers. My parents were Tommy and Lilly Pettifor and they had also worked in the Green Man in the Old Kent Road which was owned by relatives at the time. I know that one is still there, but wonder about the Red Lion. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who perhaps had relatives who know of the pub. I am talking about a long time ago! Probably around 1947 - 1950 ish. The pub had a roof garden for the dogs (and me). One of the dogs used to jump off the roof regularly and the dacshund copied him one day and was quite badly hurt (although he lived on until he was 17yrs. I was originally looking for my Tobin ancestors in Bermondsey. Whilst chatting to one of our customers I told him about my searching. "My family came from Bermondsey" he said "My old Dad was a cabman, we had stables. I saw my dad whip a man once for ill treating one of the horses, he wouldn't stand for it...not my dad. My family was the Killicks, huge family, 12 in ours!". He said proudly. Any relation do you think Bill? My dad said "Next time you see him, wait till he walks away then shout out "Whip behind Gov'ner!" He said the local lads would ride on the back of the cabs and shout it out. The man I spoke to must have been in his 70's.
