Beckton Avoid Winsor Terrace

Winsor Terrace has a housing estate on the first half of the street that is mostly alright, but has a small number of very unpleasant households where aggressive kids loiter. Try West Beckton, near to the Royal Albert DLR station -- much nicer, and well worth the extra money.

Beckton my thoughts

I have been here for 5 years, yes those kids are a nusiance but west beckton safer? I don't think so. I actually have family living in different parts of beckton and west beckton has *some* pros (e.g. nice park, which gets crowed on kids match days) and some cons (very dodgey walk to royal albert if you take the back route). I have actually lived in different parts of beckton. I actually live in WT now but I wouldn't say it was worse/better than other parts. I don't know why the other poster thinks WB is more expensive, another friend brought a place there recently and the price was actually similar to off WT. So if you like WB, go for it it won't cost you any more.

The smell is only noticable in summer, there are proposals to covert more of the gasworks to extra shopping area, which I whole hearted support as that should make it even better. (smell wise)

Beckton Take charge

There is a good few things in and around beckton for youth, but they seem to want to be led by the nose.

There is plenty of things and places; BECKTON ACTIVITY CENTRE. Plus there are thre Cadet units ATC, ACF, SCC and they are just a stones throw away in East Ham.

In order to get a better image, youth has to help its self.

Beckton Racing mopeds around savage garden estates

Has anybody complained or tried to do anything about the mopeds which are being ridden at midnight around the park area of Savage Gardens Estates? I've just moved in and am shocked by the noise these people make not only from the bikes but their sounding their hormns and shouting.

Beckton BECKTON IS GREAT

Beckton is a great place. I have lived in Beckton since 2000. The shops are brilliant. Galleons Reach Complex - London's only shopping park. Alpine Ski slopes -- something should be happening soon enough on that front.

There are loads of near future developments that will increase the value of property in and around Beckton area, new quay side developments, new bridge, largest aquarium, etc...

Yes - there is on the VERY ODD ocassion a smell that seems to swing past you - but it's very rare and never a constant wiff at all.

It's so convenient for everything; access to city, canary wharf, schools, shops, city airport, university, etc...

There are 'funny' areas - but hey - where do you come from?? Every place you go has those areas!! The Trader Estate; especially Founder Close area are sought after areas to buy if interested...

Beckton HEADACHES FROM GAS WORKS

Hi, I am very interested if any one else has information or has suffered from headaches since moving into the Beckton area. I am currently investigating if the cause may be an environmental allergic reaction.

Beckton The Old Gas Works

You probably already know this. But Beckton as a town didn't exist up until 1981. Between 1867 and 1969, the largest Gas works in Europe was situated where you live now. It was mostly demolished by the mid 80's. But I saw a programme about ten years ago, where they were saying that some new house in Beckton were starting to crack because they were built on contaminated land. I cannot be sure, but I would want to check this out if I were you. Please let me know on any feedback you get because I have an interest in the old Gasworks and I'm training to be a journalist and think it would be an fabulous story to expose.

With regards

Paul Cannon

Beckton Beckton Mosquito Biting Nuisance

Hello Everyone!
I am starting to looking for properties in Beckton. I have seen positive and negative comment about pretty much the most important aspects. But I have heard that there may be problems about mosquitoes biting voraciously people from May to the end of September (and in some cases even beyond that!). Is that true? HAs anybody heard about that? How bad are the bites?Does anybody gets allergic reactions? I am particularly intersted in this, since I have a little girl, that seems to often develop allergic reactions to bites when I go over the summer back to my home country for holidays. At times this happens to me too! THank you for your reply! Mail-me

Beckton Mosquito

Hi, i moved to beckton about 2 years ago and i can confirm the mosquito issue. Every summer i get bitten constantly, a mosquito net seems to help though, as do those plug-in repellants. I haven't had a really bad reaction as yet but i know my flatmate last year had hers swell up quite badly.

Hope this is some use.

Beckton Hi there

I have lived in Beckton Park area for nearly last two yeras. The house I am renting is just oposite the Beckton Park. Seriously - I have not noticed any mosquito problems during the summer. On one side of a house is a green park -meadow area, on the other - another green grass -footbol play area. And I have spent a lot of time outside of the house in the garden - as during last summr I was pregnant. There were no mosquitos, maybe a few, as everywhere else -nothing unussual. I wanted to buy a house in Beckton as like this - village like climate -near the city, easy access to central London and Stanstead airport, lots of green areas, I dont mind the smell near gallieons, it is only sometimes, by the way. There is only one concern - flood. What if one would happen -Beckton would sink?

Beckton Gas Lights and Coke Company (1870 - 1967)

Beckton mamed after Simon BECK was a primary supplier of Gas to the City of London. Following 1870, the housing estate named Beckton was built for the gas workers.

Does anyone have any ancestors that worked for the Beckton gasworks.  Mail-me

Beckton Beckton - close to the city fantastic place

Beckton is a fab place to live if you work in the City or Canary Wharf. Why pay double the money to live a couple of miles down the road? There are loads of shopping centres, lots of nice people and a great community spirit. 6 miles from the City but still with 3 lovely parks and a City Farm.

Beckton how bad is windsor terrace?

I've visited Beckton a few times, and generally like the place. We like the housing along Windsor Terrace, but we also hear that things can get dodgy in that area. Is Windsor Terrace really a place best avoided, as the writer below says?

Beckton Windsor terrace

HI, i live just off windsor terrace, on angelica drive.

Its a nice area most of the time but you do get kids/teenagers out at all hours during the summer. It can be quite intimidating to walk down the road on your own, however, i haven't actually had any major issues with them.

Most of the residents are quite respectful, there are just a handful it seems of people that insist on leaving their rubbish and belongings on the roads for you to drive over.

On the up side though it is close to transport links and shops.

I think it depends which part you are thinking of.

Beckton the bit down past Brewsters

He or she is probably talking about the council estate bit of Winsor Terrace near Brewsters, on down to the house where chavteens hang out, ride mini-motorcycles, smoke dope, and talk rubbish. Beyond that is new housing and a row of old Victorian terraces, where the kids (and parents!) are much better neighbours. Also, watch out for discarded shopping carts. Winsor Terrace isn't bad at all -- you want dodgy, try Canning Town! But recently someone is taking a lot of trouble to destroy the street lamps along the path from Winsor Terrace to the Beckton DLR station - not good. Beckton is still good value-for-money to rent, but forget buying. I remember 3-4 years ago when you could get a nice 3-bed terrace for £120,000 -- now you can't get anything for less than £200,000, and nothing on Winsor Terrace is worth that (but that's true all over Newham, I guess).

Beckton A safe place to live

Yes I do think that it is a safe place to move to. There are a number of schools within easy walk, medical and community centres. Lots of large open spaces, not to mention a Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda and Lidl. Could do with a Waitrose though......

Beckton Beckton aka Bagdad!

Personally I wouldn't move your nice family to Beckton.
I live here because it is very close to the City (partners job) & Canary Wharf (my job). But as a place to bring up a child, I could hardly think of a worse place in London!
It is a dirty smelly dump, with loads of undesirables, noise, dumped cars, offensive children and their even worse parents!
If I could use the term S**thole" I would.

whatever yeah it might be convinient 4 you but why u living here if its such a "s**twhole. im 17 and iv lived in beckton since i was born. my mum hasnt had any trouble nor my dad or anyone i know. Beckton is a good community so we dont need people like you bringing it down. It might be convinient for you but for some people its their roots so think before you speak. All us kids aint that bad but look around the area what is there 4 us to do then be on street thats free? nothing. my mother has brought up 2 kids here and we went to the best school in the area and have now got brilliant jobs in the city. so beckton aint a bad place its justcertain people who cause an issue.

Beckton My Beckton ..

Place is worth the investment for first time buyers and professional.
Good Points: Very easily commutable from Central London (about 30 mins to Bank by DLR and 1hr 10 by Night Bus from Trafalgur Square). Many professionals have moved in around Cyprus and Gallians Reach DLR stations.
Not so good points: The area lacks a decent Fish n Chips Shop and a pub + a Video Rental. It is not as clean as Central London but you dont expect it to be any way. The sewage farm does smell at night even though I am told it is far far away East to Beckton.
Over all its ia good place to live in your early professional life.
