Post or Ask something here in 'BERMONDSEY' BERMONDSEY Horselydown Lane, 1870Hi, my g-grandmother and her family lived in Horselydown Lane in the late 1800's. In 1871 and 1881 census they were living in no. 39. Just wondered if anyone would have any pics of that area from around that time or even from now. My g-g-grandfather was a brewers labourer so I assume it must have been the Courage brewery (Anchor?). Any pics of the brewery would be appreciated as well. Also, anyone know where any employment records would be held now? The family in 1911 consisted of William, George, Gertrude, Ethel, Thomas, Bertie, Florrie, Clarence & Stanley. Stanley died in 1964 and was my husband's father. My husband has no knowledge at all of his father's family and is trying to trace any cousins, etc, he might have. Any help would be appreciated. We used to meet at Keetons Road School for band practise, & marched round the streets every 1st. sunday in the month. The period I'm thinking of is about 1946~1953. Can you imagine doing this now with all the traffic ? It was apparently opposite The Justice Pub. I believe it was demolished in the mid 1930's. The family's surname who ran the pub was Dorothy. I didn't like being on the horse & carts in the winter! Worked at Courage for 24 years but now live in Australia. Post reply -->London BERMONDSEY pat carey 10 Jan ^ BERMONDSEY ST James School RiversideI went to St James which was called Riverside when we got bombed out ,Mr Steen was headmaster,Mrs Steen ran the infants,Mr Welch was head teacher,Miss Towers was my favourite she took us for needlework,can't remember what Miss Tasker took us for,MrsHolland did the milk and malt,when she wasn't there my aunt Mrs Carey did it,the empty malt tins were a great faavourite,my brother sister and cousins also went there.I remember the MItchells and Maskells.The name of Bridges is vey familiar,I remeber lots of names would love to hear from anybody that remembers me. The idea is to tell the history of the park in the words of local people, culminating in a book, “Our Park”, which will be published this summer. We would like to hear from people, of all ages, who are willing to either be interviewed or to write something for us. Do you have any memories of using the park when you were a child? Or the lido? The Rose Garden? What about the park's future? Or anything you care to recall! All contributions will be considered for inclusion in the book. Pat Kingwell Volunteer project co-ordinator Post reply -->London BERMONDSEY 7 Jan ^ BERMONDSEY Southwark ParkI can remember my father taking us to "The Park",before the Second World War.They had Rowing Boats on the Lake,and a large Motor Boat that you could get a tour of the Lake for 2d.In those days children were not allowed into the "Rose Garden"without an Adult.I can remember trying to find out the time from the Sundail that used to stand in the centre of the walk through.We used to take sandwiches and sit at the Oval ,watching the Cricket.There was also a Large Wooden hut,situated in The Gomm,that used to sell sweets and refreshments etc.It was a lovely day out,and i can remember going into the Large Swings,where they had Rope Swings ,Umbrella's and Boat Swings,a large Slide..all the things that seem to be missing these days.The Bowling green was always a forbidden area,and even though it had a low fence,it was never damaged.I remember the Large Fountain with the Pewter Cup on a Chain that we all used to drink out of.And the part at the bottom for the Dogs.The Lido,or swimming pool,as we Post reply -->London BERMONDSEY bill Killick 11 Jan ^ BERMONDSEYI remember Southwark Park well from just after the war when we were all let loose and the park was a place for picknicks and playing To the rear of the park where the dports complex is now was still occupied by the Army with Ack Ack guns and burrage bloons to protect the docks Joe Foster Mail-me Post reply -->London BERMONDSEY J Foster 21 Jan ^ BERMONDSEY Southwark ParkDuring the war I lived in Gomm Road& had to walk thro' the park everyday to go to SPR school. Not only were you not allowed to walk thro' the Rose garden,but if you did and was seen by the gardener who seemed to work only in that area, he would chase after you and out of the nearest gate. We used to call him Creepin' Jesus. In the park there were only 3 horsechestnut trees( conker trees) which were along the main road thro', not only were there fences around them but also KEEP OFF THE GRASS notices. As you stayed on till 1953,were you in the upper 5th., which was also my class. I worked at Peeks from1960 to 1976 ,firstly in engineers & then in the drawing office. Played football mainly for Peeks 2nd. eleven during that time.I lived in Drummond Rd. & Kirby Estate, top end of Southwark Park Rd. Went to Southwark Park Road School thro' the war years till 1948. Which junior school did you attend?. Quite a lot of kids from SPR school ended up at BC school, although mainly boys. There are quite a few on the Friends Reunited site. Bye for now, Jim.
