Post or Ask something here in 'BERMONDSEY' BERMONDSEY Looking for Webbers from bermondseyMy dad lived in the Russell Scott Buildings in Cherry Garden Street, He is John Leonard Webber born 1921, his dad was Albert Edward Webber and his mum was Jane Isabel Webber formerly Lord. Can anyone help with any information regarding Jane or Albert. My dad died on Sunday 11th July 2010 aged 88. We know very little of his life in Bermondsey. My mum Doris aged 79 (then Salsano) lived in Long Lane Bermondsey during WW2 with mum (Rosa) and dad (Federico) and sisters Marie, Clara and Ines. Brothers John and Luigi. Her father ran the barber shop next to the Ship pub. Does anyone have any memories of the barber shop maybe as customers or know of this Italian family. Some the derelect warehouses were converted into apartments, some were too damaged and new apartments built in their place. I was told that there once existed a public house on the corner of east lane inbetween Axis Court and Meridian Wharf at some time in the past. Does anyone know its name or indeed if there was such a pub in or near this road. She has an excellent memory of that time. Her name then was Ivy Alice Watson, her father was a carman. Names she talks about - The Short's - Harris's - Baxter's and her bridesmaid Evie Chapman. She went to Southwark Park School (she was born in 1912). She remembers with very fond affection a teacher called Miss Walpole who she says lived in Newlands Park, Sydenham. I know its a long shot but are there any decendents of these family's still in touch with Bermondsey? I am trying to find out if anyone remembers the Ship and Pilot pub along there. Apparently it was on the other corner to The Justice pub, near Cherry Garden Pier. My great granny and Gran ran it, great granny's surname was Dorothy, my Gran's married name was Olney. Post reply -->London BERMONDSEY 8 Apr ^ BERMONDSEYI checked with my Mum, who was Ivy Watson, who lived at 22 Cherry Garden Street from 1912 when she was born until the 1930's when she moved up to Lincolnshire.. She remembers the Ash family and she also remembers them as being tall but then she never grew to be more than 5ft. She said that they were a very nice family. The other families around her when she was growing up were the Shorts/Reeves/Stones/Baxters/Jones. She also says that there was a cobbler living in the street and a bookie and across the road were some flats where she thinks firemen lived and a nurses homes. There was also the Russell Scott Buildings.
