George and Ellen Dew and another George, probably their son, ran the post office, and also a bakery, at 168 from at least 1918 to 1938. Whilst some people say it is a nicer area that Upper Norwood/Crystal Palace (where I am renting now), I have been told that this area in Anerley is not safe, and there are a lot of rats there. Any help/advice/REALISTIC reassurance, is much appreciated. My uncle geoff used to take me fishing at the crystal palace lakes. I may be able to see if I can get any pictures if I ask my brother. I do have one in my grannys back garden backing onto the railway line I remember the church it was boarded up then but have no pictures used to visit my granny m weaver her sons lived either side George and geoffrey weaver don't know my grandads name want to find it. Remember the shopand the railway arms. Tried to find st hughs road recently but it seemed to have disappeared. We loved it there in that huge house and have many happy memories. Our names are Evelyn, Valerie and David Florence. Our dad's name was Dan and Mum was Mary. We used to play out in the street and go to Betts Park. Mum used to shout from the window when we had to come home. Out house was next to the Betts Park Canal. I used to play mostly with a great friend Rosemary (Ro) Youles., and attended Anerley County Primary School. Then Melvin Road Girls School. Is there anyone else who lived there at the time on here??? Google on its original name "North Surrey District School", which will find a good summary at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?NorthSurreySD/NorthSurreySD.shtml It says most of the records are at the London Metropolitan Archive. Bromley Local Studies have the baptismal record. It was closed around 1938 and used as a refugee centre during WW2. After the war it became an old men's home and was indeed called "Anerley House" briefly, but later renamed "Orchard Lodge". Lists of residents are given in electoral rolls. It was closed around 1960 and demolished. The huge site (NSDS grew its own food) is now housing, James Dixon School, a Secure Children's Home which retains the name "Orchard Lodge" and Orchard Playing Fields.
