London Gardening

Posted by Helen 25 May 2005 'Suggest a new Forum:' I think you should have a forum for people who want to grow things in London. Sounds ironic, but the gardening sites I've found are very full-on and not very city orientated. I say this because two years ago. in a rented flat, I was surprised how easy it is to grow little things in the garden. The garden 'makeovers' on the TV neglect to tell you that plants need water and light.

Gardening Gardening Courses

There are courses at Capel Manor college in Enfield (they have other sites, eg in Regents Park). The college has a very good reputation. Hadlow College has courses too (they have a site in the Eltham area).

Gardening Ivy Problems

We have bog standard ivy which is all the way up the front of our victorian masionette ( we are on the top floor) and also ivy is all over the back garden fences too. Does anyone know the best way to kill the ivy off ?

Many thanks !

Gardening IVY

Ooh, this is a horrible job. Not done it myself, but I've heard that if you try to pull it off brickwork you may do some damage to the mortar etc. Cut off the branches at the main stem (ie near to the ground). Rub in some ivy killer (from garden centre) liquid into the cut area, to kill the roots. This may not work the first time, so reapply as necessary. When the stuff clinging to the walls shows signs of dying, start pulling it off. There will be lots left clinging to the walls, which you can get off with some sort of palet knife. It's a tiresome job, by all accounts. If you can see that the ivy isn't doing any real harm, then I'd leave it where it is! (A mason may be able to advise you).
Good luck!

Gardening

Re: Ivy - cut it down and try to be organic. Also bear in mind that birds might well nest in the ivy so never do it when they are nesting their young. Best to make sure the ivy doesn't get out of control in first place once cut down as will damage the brickwork. Try to keep on the fencing if possible as it does look nice in winter and offers some shelter for some wildlife plus berries. Not sure if ivy produces berries - but always worth bearing in mind with shrubs.

Gardening Ivy can be a problem

I had it over the front of my house, and when it was taken down it left such a mess I had to get the house redecorated! I just kept chopping it back to the very base of the plant until it gave up the ghost completely.

Gardening Ivy berries

Ivy produces berries in time for winter, they are not ripe yet. Wood pigeons love them.
Ivy is also a valuable source of nectar for bees and other insects in October, it is often their only source of food at that time of year.
When you pull your ivy down (shame) you will discover how many creepy crawlies had made their home there!

Gardening Gardener wanted for Earlsfield Road, SW18

Hi - I desperately need some help in removing about 20ft of overgrowth at the bottom of my garden. I have to admit I've neglected the garden a bit and have managed to clear a good 60 ft of overgrowth etc, but still have a way to go. I just can't face doing any more of it! I am wondering if there is a local gardener that fancies a bit of work? If you could email me your costs or whether you want to come and have a look for a quote then I would be very grateful. Please email me on  Mail-me .

Many thanks,
Claire
