London Gardening

Posted by Helen 25 May 2005 'Suggest a new Forum:' I think you should have a forum for people who want to grow things in London. Sounds ironic, but the gardening sites I've found are very full-on and not very city orientated. I say this because two years ago. in a rented flat, I was surprised how easy it is to grow little things in the garden. The garden 'makeovers' on the TV neglect to tell you that plants need water and light.

Gardening Is it still too cold to plant out?

My first year trying to grow some veg in my garden. Have two raised beds all ready to go and lots of plants (peas, beans) that I want to plant out, plus some seeds (perpetual spinach, carrots, beets) that I want to sow directly into the ground. The weather has been shockingly cold. Does anyone know if it is safe to plant out yet, is the cold spell over? When is spring in gardening terms? Thanks.  Mail-me

Gardening Easier

It would make rotovating easier, otherwise grass will clog up in cutters, unless you're using a mother of a machine! Also, would be a bad idea to leave old grass (and weeds) in newly turned soil under new turf, just encouraging unwanted growth.

Gardening I have an allotment now- TOOLS/ACCS/EQUIPMENT needed

I have just taken on a half allotment (overgrown, so lots of work but will be worth it!) so this ad is no longer a plea for one BUT - if anyone out there has ANY un-needed/spare allotment/gardening tools, equipment or accessories etc. that they no longer need & are prepared to give them away or charge small/cheap prices for, I would be very interested and thankful. This is my first allotment & I have nowt for it yet. Please mail me  Mail-me  with details of anything regarding allotments/gardening that you have & wish to pass on/sell cheaply please. Local to Forest Hill (within Lewisham Borough) preferable but close surrounding areas considered also.
Thanks very much for reading :-)

Gardening Round-Up

Let some growth reappear above soil level, then carefully spray each individual plant with Round-Up. Works from top of plant right down to roots without having to dig anything up – also excellent for destroying and deterring Bindweed. Word of warning, this is very good at what it does – so do NOT let it go on soil or other plants as it will also kill them! (And nowhere near ponds.) When you spray, first put newspaper or equiv. under bramble growth to prevent soil contact. And don't do it on a windy day!!! Good luck ;o)

Gardening brambles

I dont know any other way that digging, and even then you need to keep on top as any roots left in will sprout again.

Gardening Olive tree not thriving

I've been given a small (about 20cm) olive tree in a pot, but I'm not good for its health which is distressing me a bit.

It's indoors obviously, but everytime I water it, it drops half its leaves such that it's now resembling a twig.

I feel like I'm nursing it to its death, and I'm missing a trick here ? Any advice very welcome.

Gardening olive tree problem

I've heard that olive trees shed their leaves every two or three years, while they are also putting on some new growth. This normally happens in spring, but with the funny winter we're having, maybe it thinks spring is here already! I'd keep watering to a minimum for now, so have the soil only just moist, not swimming. There should be plenty of drainage, with crocks on the bottom of the pot. Give it lots and lots of light, too. Good luck!

Gardening You dont have to keep it inside

If you have a sheltered spot outside, the olive tree will be fine. I've had one out on my south-facing patio for 8 years in a small pot.

Gardening PLEASE READ THIS

Should you have any interest in gardening but lack a little knowledge, as a keen gardener (now with my own business), I can recommend most strongly the only book that you will ever need.

THE READERS DIGEST ENCYCLOPAEDIA
OF GARDEN PLANTS AND FLOWERS

As a one time student of the Royal Horticultural
Society, and the owner of a virtual library of gardening books, this is the one book I refer to over and over again. It lists everything you need to know about growing and take care of all plants and includes propagation, pests and diseases and what to grow where. The only downside is that all plants are listed by their Latin names but this can be got round by looking the Latin name up in a dictionary where it will usually list common names. It also has coloured pictures for those that either have no idea of the plant they're looking up or that just want to curl up in their armchair and browse.
I cannot recomme

Gardening New to MILL HILL, LONDON

I am moving in the early spring of 2007 to The Mill Hill area of London from Los Angeles, California into a home with a lovely, large back yard that I would love nothing more than to turn into a vegetable garden. I am a vegetarian and cook extensively so I am also interested in herbs. I'd love any suggestions from local "green thumbs" on popular vegetables and herbs for the climate of London and the calendar planting suggestions. Additionally, I will have a small greenhouse to use. I am also interested in possibly getting involved in selling my produce at any local farmer's markets and would happily take advice on breaking into that market as well.  Mail-me
